What are some reactions you've gotten? Most of mine have been good. My all time favorite quote was said by my friend, the funniest man in the world:

"I don't care if you're atheist. So long as you're not black."

(He's not really racist, but he jokes around like that)

Everyone else has made sure they understood me and then moved on.

You're lucky; half my family (the drunken hillbilly side) refused to be associated with me or my dad. A few of my better friends quickly realized they were atheists, so that's good. My YMCA (the one that sent me to Japan and Guelph as their prized youth) kicked me out and refuses to see me again. A few kids attempted to convert me to christianity or mormonism on the spot. Two of them won't leave me alone to this day. A few people just stopped talking to me. I met a few surprising atheists though, and we're good buddies now. Most people had a carefully neutral stance on the whole thing.

Even though I "came out" nearly 8 years ago, I've only just started calling myself an atheist out loud to other people. My family is not overtly religious (though I would be incredibly surprised if anyone else came out as a non-believer) and they generally don't argue or debate with one another, so no one really gave me much trouble. I get the impression that they don't quite believe I am an atheist; that they think I'm just going through a phase (do 30-year-olds go through "phases?"), or that I don't really mean it. I've always been kind of the "black sheep," with my higher education and desire to leave small-town Midwest. Most people around me reply with, "Are you REALLY an atheist?" to which I lamely retort, "Are you really NOT?"

Godless, i've gotten a few questions like that too from some of my friends down here in the Air Force. There pretty good okay with me being atheists, but when we heard the Dane Cook joke about the atheist and the sneezing everytime i sneeze one of them always says, "nothing happens when you die."
Its all jokes though, there cool about it. which i'm glad. i know those a few people i've talked to online who i'm glad i've never meet.
Sir Elderberry, that must have taken a lot to come out as an atheist at 13. I know it wasnt easy for me a few years ago. I basically had to start a fight with my stepmother, although i dont think it actually sank in until i told my dad i was an atheist a few weeks/months later. He's pretty cool about it but i still wonder to these days if he truly understands.
Back before i came out i used to wish that i could be religious so i didnt have to be different than everybody else, that i could simply take there religion at face value. But now i'm glad that wish didnt come true, i like being in the minority, makes me feel special. Feels like i have to work harder for what everyone else gets already.
Congrats again.
