The rate at which a body decomposes to skeletal remains depends on several factors, including regional climate. A body in the open air will decay roughly the same amount in one day that a body in water does in a week, which is about the same as a body underground does in a month, Jamie Downs of the Alabama Department of Forensic Science said in an article published on Discover.com.

A body buried in the ground can decay in a single year, according to Downs, who added that heat increases the rate of decay, while cold slows it down.
