I posted the official post in the 2010 disappearances but thought I would cross post here as well.

How often do people just "disappear" and live out the rest of their life somewhere else? Or is he most likely dead? And if he is dead, how come they wouldn't have found a body or any remains? I read an article from the town where he disappeared which talked about search and rescue. It said that in 20 years, there had only been 1 drowning where the remains of the person were never found any piece parts of the body.

I just really wish I knew one way or the other. And I'm apparently the only person that seems to care. He does a have a million dollar life insurance policy with his wife as beneficiary but of course, they won't pay out until he is found or for another 6 years.

Anyway, if y'all have any insight in to how likely it could be that he is just hiding out somewhere vs he is dead and hidden very well, I guess I would love to get your opinions.

Thanks in advance.

There are certainly many instances of people gone voluntarily missing. Much of what you say about his activities and experiences before disappearing would sure seem to indicate that a voluntary disappearance is more than possible. Nor do I believe that most adults who go missing do so in order to commit suicide. I do believe that many adults, especially men, leave when under pressure as they see it as the safest option.
There are some folks out there in the etherworld who like to say that those kind of cases are "maliciously missing" but I say until you walk a mile in those moccasins, you can't know what options the person may have felt they had. I remember one man upon returning who said he felt he had three choices, murder, suicide, or leaving. I thought he took the proper choice when he just up and left. I pray that that is what your friend Eric did. He has such a sweet smile, and people who enter the medical field do so because they are helping, caring people. Perhaps he was overwhelmed with the idea of a separation, divorce, finances and upheaval. He may have felt the just leaving would at least spare him a lot of the give and take and angst of a divorce.
Have you tried checking with the aid organizations, etc who might be working in Qatar? I would think with his degrees he is going to be using them somewhere. He sounds like such an interesting man. And how wonderful you still consider him your best friend.
I am sorry for such a long delay in responding to you. I have been a bit overwhelmed in my home life the last few weeks. Lots of good changes though! LOL

Thank you so much for your kind reply -- no apology needed (especially since I'm just now getting back to this now myself). To be honest -- it just is nice to know that someone else has actually read this. And congratulations on good changes!

I wouldn't even know how to search aid organizations in Qatar -- I supposed I should get me to the nearest google and start searching. If you have suggestions on how I might do that, I would appreciate it.

Thank you again. I truly hope you are right that he just got overwhelmed. I keep going through my last IM exchanges hoping for clues.

I just wonder... in this post 911 world where you have to have a name, SSN, and proof of degrees etc how he could possibly be using his training without being found. You would think that if he did anything, there would be some flag in some database somewhere that would kick out an error message along the lines of "hmmm the person with THIS SSN was reported missing on 09/29/2010... better look report this!"

Thanks again!!

N.
