Shane Fell's face has been all over New Orleans for months. Since he disappeared in June, his image has been reproduced on countless fliers, signs and T-shirts. It has been etched in the hearts of family and friends attending candlelight vigils, benefit concerts and memory walks. And drivers crossing the Crescent City Connection see his photograph on an electronic billboard.

Susan Poag,The Times-Picayune Chances are if you travel on the West Bank, you have seen the signs with Shane Fell's image and name, urging anyone with any information to contact the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office. This billboard can be seen by motorists crossing the Crescent City Connection to the West Bank.

But despite all those efforts, the last clue about Fell's whereabouts was located not far from where he flipped his car near River and Marrero roads in Marrero on June 10. His brother, Brett Fell, found Fell's shoe in the mud near the wrecked car after his brother called to tell him about the crash 20 minutes after it happened and to report that he was OK.

In the weeks that have followed, Shane Fell's family has debated and discarded theories on his whereabouts. They have checked and rechecked his bank accounts, and they have created a Facebook page seeking information. And, they have learned a simple truth: It is easy for an adult to disappear, but it is somewhat harder for them to go "missing."

As of December 2010, there were more than 47,000 adults listed as missing in the FBI's National Crime Information Center. For authorities to deem an adult missing, the person in question must meet one of several criteria: have a disability; be absent under a situation that indicates physical danger; be listed as missing after a catastrophe; disappear under involuntary circumstances; or there must be a reasonable concern about his or her safety.

One thing is clear: The reaction to adults who disappear differs wildly to that of a missing child. While missing children may prompt Amber Alerts, massive searches and media attention, missing adults often fly below the radar as people wonder if the adults have intentionally vanished.

NEW ORLEANS -- For Brett Fell and family, it's a constant struggle.

For nearly a year now, they’ve been consumed by the possible scenarios and what-ifs, as their relentless search for answers continues.

Brett’s brother, Shane Fell, disappeared the night of June 10 last year.

In the time since, clues have been almost non-existent.

"We still have no pertinent information on Shane's whereabouts," Brett said. "We constantly think about him every day, and we love him."

The mystery began along River Road in Marrero, where Fell flipped his car into a ditch near a sharp curve.

Moments later, he called Brett to come pick him up, but when Brett arrived, Shane was nowhere to be found.

He hasn't been seen since.

For many days after, friends and family scoured areas near the crash site, on both sides of the Mississippi River levee. They sought out people who may have driven by just after the accident and, at one point, actually made contact with someone who claimed Shane declined their offer to help him.

Each effort turned up nothing.

Now, more than 11 months later, signs bearing their pleas for help still hang near the crash site, visible to passers-by.

"Every day we're reminded that (Shane’s) not here and just hoping that we get some kind of information -- whether he can get brought back to us safely or if the worst has happened -- just to be able to get some closure of some sort," Brett said.

Initially, investigators with the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office suggested Shane may have simply left the accident scene to avoid legal trouble, Brett said.

It's a scenario loved ones wish were true but, sadly, one they find hard to believe.

"I'm hoping that he is out there, but I'm thinking that something bad could've happened and it happened pretty quick," Brett said. "Whether, maybe, he was trying to walk away and made his way into the street, and somebody might have hit him or something."

Family members said they haven’t heard from detectives in months.

We reached out to the JPSO for information on the case, but no one got back to us Tuesday.

With the investigation seemingly stalled, the Fells now hope a remorseful conscience may lead to a revelation about what happened to Shane.

"If he cannot come home to us in the way that we want, (we hope) that somebody, the burden, the Good Lord will put the burden on them, that they'll need to come out and confess what has happened," Brett said. "It's hard. We'll never forget him.”

The Fells ask anyone with information in the case to call authorities. They’re also accepting anonymous tips by mail at the following address:

P.O. Box 2888
Gretna, LA 70054

There’s a website dedicated to the search: http://www.HelpFindShaneFell.com

To mark the one-year anniversary of Shane’s disappearance, family members invite the public to attend a vigil, where they’ll release flying lanterns into the sky. The vigil will be held at the intersection of Marrero Road and River Road -- Sunday, June 10 at 7:00 p.m.

The case will be the focus of a show to air nationally on A&E in August, according to family members.

Shane was driving a dark blue/green Saturn. The accident happened on River Road between Klein Road and Marrero Road early on the morning of Friday June 10, 2011 around 12:45 a.m. His car flipped at least once.

We are asking that witnesses, anyone who might've passed by the scene, please call or post something on the Facebook page "Help Find Shane Fell" or CALL 504-382-1334 OR JPSO at 504-364-5300.

The Friends of Shane Fell, a Georgia not for profit LLC, has a final payment due of approximately $1000 owed to the private investigator who has reviewed the entire case from the very beginning. His conclusions were not what the friends and family of Shane would have preferred but as we head into this Holiday Season and the New Year it brings some peace of mind to know that all leads have been thoroughly exhausted - twice. First by the folks at J.P.S.O and subsequently by an independent investigator. Working with the full cooperation of the Detectives at J.P.S.O, our private investigator has spent many hours retracing the steps taken in the J.P.S.O investigation as well as following up on more-recent items.
Many small items that would have added up into several more hours of work were not charged for by the P.I. and for that we are very grateful. Please contribute whatever you can afford. Marrero man still missing after crashing on West Bank

The search continues for a Marrero man who has been missing since early Friday after he crashed his car along River Road.

Shane Fell
Shane Fell, 36, has not been seen since he wrecked his car near River and Marrero roads Friday after midnight.

Shortly after the crash, Fell called his brother, whom he had been playing pool with that night, and told him about the wreck. That was the last contact any of his family had with him.

Meanwhile, authorities have combed a wooded area near the crash site and the nearby Mississippi River levee looking for any trace of him.

Sgt. Larry Dyess, a spokesman for the Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office, said investigators understand that Fell told his brother that he was going to try to find a way to leave the crash site, and he was not there when his brother arrived about 20 minutes after the wreck. Although investigators are conducting interviews and continuing their search, they do not believe foul play was involved in Fell's disappearance, Dyess said.

However, Fell's family members disagree. They think his disappearance was the result of foul play or an accident. They say Fell never told them he was leaving the scene of the accident and he knew his brother was on his way.

The family is seeking information through a Facebook page.

Amber Fell said it makes no sense that her brother-in-law would leave the scene voluntarily. She said the family thinks that he could have wandered to the nearby levee and succumbed to some internal injuries, or he was preyed upon by someone driving along the road.

"Everything that was there on the scene, except for him, is what he told us," Fell said. "We've been all over that area looking, I can't tell you how many times."

Shane Fell recently returned to the New Orleans area after living in Savannah, Ga. for years, Amber Fell said, adding that he had few friends locally. She also stressed that he hung out with her family several times a week, and they don't believe he had a substance abuse problem that would cause him to disappear for days at a time. She believes he either fell into the river or was taken by someone.

"At this point, we're thinking it could be foul play," she said. "This is not normal."

Anyone with information about Fell's disappearance is asked to call the Jefferson Parish Sheriffs' Office at 504.364.5300.

NEW ORLEANS -- The number of searchers was down substantially from the weekend on Monday, but family and friends are just as determined to find 34-year-old Shane Fell.

They are searching the area along River Road from Harvey through Marrero to Westwego.

"At this point I'm kind of hoping he's not still in this area," said Fell's brother, Brett. "To me, that would be one of the worst-case scenarios, of him possibly bumping his head and being injured and stumbling into a wooded area or high-grass area and us not being able to find him."

According to family members, Fell was on his way home from a Marrero daiquiri Shop when he flipped his car early Friday morning.

His brother says he talked with Shane shortly after he failed to make the turn on a winding stretch of River Road locals call "dead man's curve," near the old Celotex factory.

"I asked him if he was okay and he told me he was involved in a car accident," said Brett Fell. "He told me his car flipped over. He was well aware of what was going on."

But, in the short time between the phone call and when the brother arrived on the scene, Fell disappeared.

"I'm kind of hoping that a Good Samaritan picked him up, he was injured in his head, didn't have his ID on him and hospitals shuffling him around, or he's somewhere at least," said Brett Fell.

Friends put up more missing person fliers Monday, hoping anyone with information will come forward.

The state police and Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office are involved in the investigation.

The family is now hoping search dogs from Louisiana Search and Rescue will join in the hunt for Shane Fell, but they admit at this point in the search, time is not on their side.

"I hate to say it, but I afraid our window is closing," said Brett Fell. "I don't want to think that, but I'm always hoping for the best. I will always hope for the best until we find him."

Family members have now expanded the search to local hospitals and police departments. Some are also searching the French Quarter.

Anyone with information is asked to call the JPSO at 504-364-5300.

.MARRERO, La. ¯ Fighting the intense midday heat, family and friends fanned out along River Road in Marrero on Sunday searching for 36-year-old Shane Fell.

They focused on the area where, early Friday morning, Fell flipped his car.

Relatives said state police, who are investigating the accident, initially questioned whether Fell fled the scene and was hiding out.

But they said his bank card hasn’t been used and that no one has heard from him.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff's officials said a detective has been assigned to the case, but Sunday afternoon, family members were frustrated that authorities weren’t helping more with the search.

Regardless, relatives vow to press on.

They’ve set up a Facebook page and posted flyers in hopes of bringing Shane home safely.

"We just, we miss him, man,” Shane’s brother Brett Fell said. “We’re looking for him. We don't know where he's at. We just want him to come home.”

Brett said he spoke with Shane by phone moments after the crash and that Shane said he wasn’t injured. Brett immediately drove to the scene, but said his brother was nowhere to be found.

"When we arrived, there was a few police officers on the scene, some ambulances, fire department, and nobody had seen him when they arrived,” Brett Fell said. “They asked us if we knew where he was, and we didn't.”

Brett said he was with Shane just before the accident, shooting pool at a daiquiri shop on Barataria Boulevard.

He said the two left in separate vehicles and that Shane crashed while driving home.

"(Shane) didn't act scared like somebody was chasing him or something, maybe, didn't mention anything of that nature,” Brett Fell said. “He knew where he was on River Road, so he seemed very coherent at the time, but I don't know if maybe something set in later or maybe somebody picked him and brought him some place.”

Marrero, LA - One year after his disappearance, the family of 36-year-old Shane Fell, who went missing after his car flipped into a ditch in Marrero is still holding on to hope he will be found alive. Sunday, the family of Fell held a vigil marking one year since his disappearance.

One year ago in an industrial area of River Rd. near Marrero Rd., 36-year-old Shane Fell disappeared after crashing his car.

"It's not a whole lot of clues that they have that can tell us either way what happened with Shane that morning," said Brett Fell, Shane's brother.

Brett Fell found his brother's green Saturn rolled over in a small ditch, 20 minutes after the accident, but Fell wasn't there.

"I spoke to him twice on the phone. The first time was when I called him, and then talked to him for about three minutes, and then he called me back, a short time later just to make sure I was on the way. He sounded a little panicky, you know I guess from over turning your car," said Fell.

After a Thursday night out at Rum Runners, a pool hall off Barataria Blvd., and only five minutes from the accident, Brett says he, his brother, and about eight other guys went their separate ways. Brett says he just happened to call Shane around 12:40 on that morning and that's when he told him he was in a single car accident, and his car flipped over.

A few minutes later, Brett says Shane called him back to make sure he was on his way. Brett says that was the last time he heard from his brother.

"It's all speculation at this point, and there are millions of ideas, and really everything runs through your head, whether somebody might have picked him up, and he's unsure where he's at, you know he's got a brain injury or something," said Fell. "He had an out of state license from Georgia, maybe he thinks he's living in Georgia now, and he's up there, so who knows."

The Fell family says they're still holding on to hope and praying that someone will come forward with information.

"Somebody somewhere has seen him, and call us, and we will gladly pick him up," said the mother of Shane Fell.

Brett says he and his family met with the Jefferson Parish Sheriffs office this past Friday. He says they have no new leads, and Shane Fells disappearance has been listed as a cold case.
