Police say a man who was reported missing in August may be on the Long or Appalachian trails. A car belonging to a Konstantin Salikhov, 31, of Providence, R.I., was found Tuesday in Peru, Vt. It was parked on Mad Tom Notch Road at an entrance to the Appalachian Trail. The trail cuts across southern and central Vermont as it runs from Georgia to Maine.
Salikhov was last seen Aug. 28. Friends and family said Salikhov is an avid hiker and runner, state police said.
Police said Wednesday that they do not know how long the car was parked in Peru. State police searched the area around the car with the help of a dog, but nothing was found, authorities said.
Police said they seized the car and are looking for possible forensic evidence on or in the vehicle, but there have been no signs of foul play.
Salikhov's parents last heard from their son Aug. 21 as he was completing a hiking trip in the western United States, according to television station WJAR in Providence. The television station also said Salikhov's car was found to be missing after he disappeared.
He was reported missing to Providence police Aug. 28.
Vermont police said they are working with the Providence Police Department on the investigation.
