PERU - State Police have issued a missing person alert for hiker from Providence, R.I., who was last seen in August.
According to the police, On Oct. 19, 2010 at approximately 3:30 p.m., the vehicle belonging to Konstantin Salikhov was discovered in the Town of Peru on Mad Tom Notch Road. The vehicle was parked at the entrance to the Appalachian hiking trail.

Salikhov is a resident of Providence, R.I. who had been reported missing since Aug.28, according to the Providence Police Department. Salikhov was an avid hiker and runner. t is possible that he may be on either the Appalachian Trial or the Long Trail. Anyone has information regarding this case, or has come into contact with Salikhov, should contact Sgt.Richard Holden of the state Police at 802-875-2112

Police say missing man may be hiking

Police say a man who was reported missing in August may be on the Long or Appalachian trails. A car belonging to a Konstantin Salikhov, 31, of Providence, R.I., was found Tuesday in Peru, Vt. It was parked on Mad Tom Notch Road at an entrance to the Appalachian Trail. The trail cuts across southern and central Vermont as it runs from Georgia to Maine.

Salikhov was last seen Aug. 28. Friends and family said Salikhov is an avid hiker and runner, state police said.

Police said Wednesday that they do not know how long the car was parked in Peru. State police searched the area around the car with the help of a dog, but nothing was found, authorities said.

Police said they seized the car and are looking for possible forensic evidence on or in the vehicle, but there have been no signs of foul play.

Salikhov's parents last heard from their son Aug. 21 as he was completing a hiking trip in the western United States, according to television station WJAR in Providence. The television station also said Salikhov's car was found to be missing after he disappeared.

He was reported missing to Providence police Aug. 28.

Vermont police said they are working with the Providence Police Department on the investigation.

Parents of missing Russian man seek answers in RI

PROVIDENCE -- The parents of a Brown University graduate student who was reported missing in August told NBC 10 Tuesday they believe he's still alive.

The parents of 31-year-old Konstantin Salikhov and a representative from the Russian consulate flew to Providence to see his apartment and plea for help to find him.

Salikhov was first reported missing on Aug. 28.

After Salikhov completed a doctorate degree from Brown in math, he flew out to California to hike. Relatives and police said they believe he flew home on Aug. 20 and called his parents to say he was OK.

The next day, relatives said they believe that he may have driven to Vermont where his car was found near the entrance of the Appalachian Trail on Oct. 20.

Salikhov's family said he's an avid hiker.

Vermont police said Salikhov's car was found on Mad Tom Notch Road. Police said they believed the car was there for several weeks.

Police said there was no sign of foul play.
