SACRAMENTO POLICE DEPARTMENT
News Release
Release #12-05-01a
December 5, 2001

Police are now able to complete 3-dimensional facial reconstructions

The Sacramento Police Department is one of the few agencies in this region with the capability to complete 3-Dimensional Facial Reconstructions of possible victims.

3-Dimensional Facial Reconstruction is used to identify a person from their skeletal remains. The process uses clay to reconfigure what the person looked like in an attempt to identify homicide victims or missing persons.

Barbara Anderson, an Identification Technician III, is currently working on a facial reconstruction to assist investigators with the identification of a body that was found burned in a dumpster on 18th Avenue, just west of Power Inn Road. The body was found on June 29th, 2001, at approximately 4:54 a.m., after the Sacramento Fire Department responded to a possible structure fire.

Barbara Anderson is one of the few people in this area that has the ability to complete a 3-Dimensional Facial Reconstruction. Anderson has worked for the Sacramento Police Department in the Forensic Identification Unit for 12-years. She recently completed a Forensic Facial Imaging Training Course at the FBI Academy and an Advanced 3-Dimensional Facial Reconstruction Course at the University of Oklahoma.

Anderson is also the Department’s sketch artist and has been responsible for the identification and arrest of several suspects. She produced the sketch that led to the arrest of the suspect (Dennis Orr) in a recent rape series in the downtown area.

Media wishing to cover this story can contact Barbara Anderson at 264-8792 to arrange an interview.

Clay Reconstruction Used to Help Identify Murder Victim

Sacramento Police are trying to solve a murder mystery with the help of a clay model. A special facial reconstruction was done on the skull of a woman found in a dumpster last June.

The mystery woman was found inside a flaming dumpster off Power Inn Road, burned beyond recognition. With no other way to identify her, police called on a sketch artist to create a clay model of her face. The case marks the first time the Sacramento Police Department has used clay reconstruction in a forensic investigation.

Detectives working on the case hope someone will recognize the model and reveal the woman's identity. "She was well cared for, and there was someone out there that is missing her," said Barbara Anderson of the Sacramento Police Department. "We owe it to her and her family to find her identity and find out what happened."

Police say the woman was in her late teens or early 20's. She stood between five feet and five feet, six inches in height. Investigators add the woman's teeth were very well cared for. She also had a broken nose at one time.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call the Sacramento Police Department.
