ive been a cs lewis fan ever since i read the narnia books as a little runt in jr high. when i found out the movie was going to be made i was ecstatic but as i see the marketting machine kick into high gear alongside it im not sure if im still quite as elated.

the mass marketing and consumer driven xian ethos bugs me. its like crusty dirt in my flip flops that i cant shake loose. i dont know if its just me and im overreacting but there seems to be something terribly wrong with the whole thing. does anyone really need a narnia keychain and matching table cloth? will the action figures bring us closer to christ while giving our kids family friendly toys to play with?

im troubled by it. am i the only one?

I have the same gut reaction, but I think we ought be a bit careful about it.

Right or wrong, in the current culture having action figures is not indulgent - they perhaps require children to use their minds and imagination more than just about any other popular toy out there (can anyone say "Grand Theft Auto"?)

Children learn how to be adults through play. If Christian-related toys result in Christian-related attitudes (something I would have to see to believe), then they're not bad.

I have to say that I am skeptical about this, though ... I think children are more likely to replicate their parents through play with whatever toys they have on hand, than to use the toys for anything remotely related to their nominal purpose.
