QUOTE (Arkaris @ Oct 15 2005, 03:59 PM)
I really have a problem with the "Limited Atonment." I think that part just really bothers me to no end. There are scriptures that say "Christ died once of all" and there is even one in 1 John where it says "Christ died for the whole world." I just can't bend those scriptures enough to say Christ died only for those that would believe in Him. I also find it fairly difficult to believe that people go to hell for the sins they commit (adultry, murder, ect) but that they are sent to hell because they were not sealed by the Spirit (recieved Christ, not recieved His forgiveness, but revieved Him as a lifestyle). Any help on this would be great... I think I believe Limited Atonment is correct... I just can't get around certain verses to "make" it correct...

This is my first visit here, but I've met some of you at another board in the past.
Um, Akaris, the reason you have a hard time accepting the Limited Atonement is that it does not arise from scripture at all. There is nothing in scripture to support it (the verses that are used are pathetically weak) and there are clear verses that disporve it. But Reformed peole believe it because it is needed to make their system work. As you honestly note, you have to start by believing it first and then bend some scriptures to fit. Not a good way to do theology. Scripture says, God is not willing that any should perish" but Reformed theology asserts just the opposite, that God was not only willing that some should perish but devised a plan of salvation that requires that many perish. Don't fall for it. That uneasiness you feel about this doctrine is the Holy Spirit nudging you. Jesus is the Savior of all, not of a limited number. If that messes up a theological formulation, so be it.
