Hi everyone! I was looking at my copy of the simarillion again a while ago and I just noticed a part at the back which I had never noticed b4. It was kind of like a dictionary, it was a couple of pages translating the names of the elven people and places named by them. So anyways, I'll be posting the meaning of some of the elven people later on when I have more time but for now here are a few:

Elrond: el(e) meaning star and rond meaning dome so basically star-dome

Arwen: ar(a) meaning high or noble , and wen meaning maiden so basically meaning noble maiden

Celeborn: celeb meaning silver and orn meaning tree so basically silver tree
Fun fact: There's a note also at the back that says: "Celeborn" is actually pronounced "Keleborn" and not as "Seleborn" as commonly believed (and also done in the movie).

Oh yeah and the closest Ellethwen comes to being translating is "starmaiden" (coming from the origins ele and wen).

So anyway that's all I have time to do for now. But I'll post more later!!!

I thought my name meant Madien of the Stars for the longest time. However, I learned on the War of the Rings boards that is actually means "Elven Maiden", elleth being elven and wen being maiden.

You didn't notice that part at the back? That was the first part I noticed, and I've been using it ever since to name characters in fanfics.

Hmmm....that's a big task, naming the meanings of all the characters, I think I'll help you there...

Melian-Dear gift, variation of Melyanna (Mel meaning dear, anna meaning gift)

Luthien-Enchantress (slanted accent over u)

Tinuviel-Nightingale (slanted accent over u)

Elwing-Star spray

Elros-Star foam

Legolas-Green leaves

And that's all I'll be bothered to do this early in the morning...

Because you live halfway across the world from us, in Australia. we live in Iowa, USA (and no, not everybody here is a farmer)

How exactly did we get on this subject?

NO!!! MUST STAY ON TOPIC!!!!

Unfortunately, all i can find is this translation of Earendil...oh, and here's one of Chacharoth...

Earendil-Disinterested love? (not sure about that...and there's a double-dot accent over the a)

Charcharoth-Red maw OR jaws of red
