Fishing gear in hand, Sokka glanced back at the humped white walls of the village. Small dark forms were parading back and forth along the wall top -- hey, someone had to keep watch and someone had to fish; in this instance, he was the fisherman and the little kids were playing guard. They took it seriously enough...well, as seriously as kids their age could take guard duty. Satisfied, he turned away and headed toward a small point that was known for good fishing. Or, well, he headed in the general direction of the point; one thing about living on ice: it was always changing. Sometimes it changed while you were there, and that could be downright disturbing, and in some cases, dangerous. Fortunately, most movement of that nature occurred where the ice was thinnest and where it met with larger expanses of water, and the ice around the Southern Water Tribe's village was good and thick and well away from water.
Good for stability; bad for fishing.
Plopping down at the water's edge, he dangled the end of the fishing line in the water -- spears were all well and good for streams and shallow water, but nets and lines were invaluable in deeper areas -- and set to waiting. It might be a long wait, and then again it might not. He couldn't say that he enjoyed fishing overly much, but fishing meant food, and he did enjoy that. It was a lose-win sort of situation.
Fishing also gave the fisher a lot of time to ponder or think or stare off into space until the line went taught. Sokka found that he came up with some of his best ideas while fishing...whether they were successful or not in practice was up for debate, but at least the ideas were good. That was something, wasn't it?
ooc// I left this wide open, so...yeah. ^.^

It had been several days since that firebender Zuko had come across and after him. Thankfully to the two that had also found him; Katara and Sokka, he was able to escape with them to the southern water tribe. This was the climate of the powerful yet gentle water benders. A hundred years ago, things were so calm, so gentle. Everyone was in peace and unity. Thanks to the fire nation, that peace, that unity, it was all gone. Now he was the avatar once more, 100 years later, and with only two friends. Not that he had many so far back, but he lost some very influential people to his life. In name, it was really just Monk Gyatso that had been his father figure and closest friend. Even after becoming the Avatar when the other kids shunned him, he was there for Aang. Eyes open and the darkness slowly fading to light, he looked around. Sokka was gone, and Katara wasn't visible around the area. Appa was outside more than likely or perhaps lazily swimming. Stretching a bit, Aang sat up yawned a bit. Today was gonna be fun, he could use his glider to skim the water outside, or he could slide down one of the glaciers! Though, he wondered what the water benders did for fun; well what anyone today did for fun. He had come to realize he was the last airbender, so riding an air top was out of the question for the others. Standing to his feet he took a step outside after grabbing his staff. Looking around, it was a pure white and blue scene. Quite hypnotizing really. The only questions left now were, where were Sokka, Appa and Katara. "Appa?" He said taking several steps forward. "Sokka?!" Where were they. Not to mention Appa was missing. Maybe he followed Katara. "Katara...?" Where were they. ooc: Crappy but, figured it would give Katara something to go off, and then can lead to us getting to Sokka, or Sokka to us once he's done.

It had been half an hour of nothing, not even the teeniest of tugs at the string, and Sokka had begun to think that the fish were up to something. That hypothesis lasted all of two second before something gave a mighty yank and caught him off guard. Tightening his grip on the rod, he pulled back, using one hand to pull in the excess line...whatever it was was fighting, hard. Leaning forward, he pulled back as hard as he could and out of the water popped...a tiny fish.
For a long moment he just stared at the little thing as it flopped on the snow, then he picked up the line and held it up for closer examination. Oh, it was tiny all right, less than tiny; it was minuscule. Weird was the only word for it. Who would have thought such a tiny fish could pull that hard? The fish had stopped its wiggling and it seemed to be staring right at him. Oh yes, definitely weird.
Sokka eyed his lone catch. "You're mocking me, aren't you?" The fish continued to stare in an oh-so-fishy sort of way and he finally sighed and unhooked the little menace. As soon as it hit the water the fish sped away into the depths, tail working furiously back and forth, back and forth.
Not particularly wanting to repeat that inexplicably odd experience, he quickly packed up his gear and headed back, fishing expedition thoroughly unsuccessful. Whoever said fishing in the morning yielded the best catch must never have been to the south pole.
Trudging into the village, he caught sight of Aang and waved. Once you got past his being the Avatar and all, he was really just a normal kid who liked to do normal kid things, and no one could say that he was snooty or anything like that. Aang had a sense of realness to him, which was arguably a good thing.
"Have you seen Katara yet?" He hadn't seen her that morning before leaving, nor on his way back in, and maybe Aang had, since he'd been there.
ooc// gah...this- this is the post of a tired mind. I really shouldn't post at midnight...

_____________________________________________________________________________ Katara had rose early and Sokka was already gone but Aang still lay asleep. Stepping out into the early morning air Katara had just stepped outside when Appa came out of no where, nudging her side with his large head. Giggling she side stepped to regain her balance before wrapping her fingers into the thick fur of the bison and ruffling it, "Good Morning Appa." she said softly. As she made her way down towards the water the large creature trudged along side of her but unlike herself who just knelt by the water and slashed her face, Appa lept into the water causing a large surge to rise into the air. Motioning with her hands the large wave of water slid to the side and around her while her crisp laughter cut through the otherwise silent morning. Sitting down she bundled her clothes around her and watched Appa splash and swim in the water and almost fell asleep again, letting her eyelids slip as the sun lolled her to sleep. If it wasn't for the splash of water that she hadn't seen hitting her in the face she may have actually fallen asleep. Casting her blue eyes into the water she grinned at the bison who sat there making a noise that sounded like his version of laughter. Standing up she cast the water from her face and motioned for the creature to follow, "Come on Appa, lets find the other."Walking back towards the tribe with Appa trailing behind her she first caught sight of Sokka and then Aang and caught his question towards the Avatar. "I'm right here Sokka."

"No; no fish," he replied, sighing gustily for emphasis. "That is, unless you consider a tiny fish that enjoys mocking people with its tininess to be a catch. I for one, do not." That little thing was going to give him nightmares with all the staring and the blinking and that little bloop sound it made.... There must be some sort of fish conspiracy or something. That would at least explain the utter lack of fish at the point. Usually the fishing there was so good!
His stomach grumbled at the thought of some of the fish he'd caught there on prior trips -- none of them tiny, mind you -- and then it repeated itself for good measure. For now he would just blame it on the tiny mocking fish; it probably drove the others away with its mocking attitude.
Blinking, he turned at the sound of his sister's voice. He hadn't even heard her approach..which was probably because he was so focused on that little fish. Or perhaps it wasn't, but either way he had an answer to his question. Then again, even if she hadn't said anything, it would have been mighty hard to miss Appa. Flying bison weren't exactly a normal part of south pole scenery.
ooc// again, I'm posting at midnight...sorry for shortness, but I just had to get something up before I left for camping. hope I gave you enough to go off of. :x

_____________________________________________________________________________ {{Sorry dears. I was moving into my new place and didn't have any internet connection}} Katara laughed at Sokka as he responded to Aang's question, "What's the matter Sokka, I thought you were such a great fisherman." she said, a wide smirk gracing her features. She new her brother was skilled at fishing and she knew that he usually had really great success but why waste this moment to make fun of him. Sure there were plenty of times to do it but this was just so perfect she couldn't resist. Glancing down at her brother's stomach as his rumbled she grinned widely once again. "I guess breakfast is up to me today." she said as she glanced at her brother. If he didn't bring any fish then breakfast was gonna be a bit more modest today, some leftover dried fish they had and some bread, nothing too special but it would do, they were used to it by now. She just hoped her brother had better luck in the future, they needed to stock pile for all the adventures that they were going to have.

Sokka shot a glare at his sister. Oh, he knew she was just needling him, but he couldn't help it; he had an overdeveloped sense of pride. Still glowering, he retorted stiffly, "I am! ... Today was just...not good." Stupid tiny mocking fish, he added silently. Ruining a good fishing trip....
At his sister's next comment he couldn't resist a sarcastic jab of his own. "Fine, O master of breakfast." Okay, so it wasn't the best comeback in the world, but it was an attempt and that had to count for something, didn't it?
Then it was Aang's turn to get a look. "Good thing? Explain how no fish is a good thing," he asked, curiosity mingling with a healthy dose of shock. And that shock only grew when he heard Aang's reason. "You don't eat meat." Folding his arms he went on, "You're kidding, right?" Some small, semi-rational part of him knew that it went without saying that the younger boy most likely meant what he said, but that semi-rational part was overruled and ignored by curiosity and that aforementioned 'healthy dose of shock'.
ooc// it's alive... mostly. this time of year is always terrible for new sites. sorry I couldn't work your imminent arrival into this post Zuko; I tried and then got rid of those few sentences because it seemed really contrived...:-( sorry.
