Chin-Mae was settled on the grass near the pond in the Fire Nation garden. Many nobles came here - but only a few came to this particular spot, at one time it had been a retreat of Ursa and Zuko's, but now that neither of them were here, well lets just say few people entered this place.
Chin-Mae on the other hand loved watching the turtle ducks- and loved the gentle sound of the water beside him as he relaxed himself in the near silence. It was nearing sunset here, and it would not be long before Chin set a fire ball to hover above him so he could continue working.
He was drawing at the moment, in the relaxed calm and peace of the gardens. Often he found his rooms far to opressive for when he chose to draw-often he found any walls surrounding him to opressive to enjoy drawing, he liked openness- that was just his way.
Quickly this image was becoming one of his favorites. This one, was of the Princess Ursa who had left about seven years before this time. She was one of Chin's favorite subjects for various reasons, most specifically the fact that she was such a complex person to capture-Chin loved the challenge of getting emotions and expressions correct.

Chin Mae blinked at Ty Lee for a moment after the compliment as if he wasn't quite sure what to make of it. "Thank you, Ty lee, from you, that means a lot." He said quietly after just a moment, smiling at her. After all, there was only three or four people who had known Ursa that well- Zuko, Azula-who hadn't liked her, so it wouldn't have been much of a compliment- Mai, who was well Mai- And Ozai- well...Ozai was Ozai.
So, for Ty Lee, the most reachable of the four to have said that about his drawing, well, it meant quite a bit to him. Probably more than she even realized.
"I heard you singing a moment ago- It was very pretty." He said quietly, trying to start a bit of a conversation with the sweet girl-now while Azula wasn't here to affect her. After a second he motioned for her to take a seat on the grass with him.
(-probably-not a crush just me playing around, promise)

“I think sometimes that if I turn around quickly enough I just might see her sitting beneath her tree.” "The song I was singing….was one Ursa sang to us while she sewed. I miss her…she was ..special. Her chi glowed a warm amber…much like the noon day sun.“
"Ursa was a very special woman. And she touched many lives-effected many people who never realized how much she meant to them until she was gone...far out of reach," Chin Mae murmered softly, closing his eyes for a moment.
"I know that feeling- You can almost hear her, in this place, if you are still enough- at least, thats what it feels like-and I wasn't even really that close to the lady." He spoke as he opened his eyes, studying her face once more, trying to decide how much of what he had said was safe - never to leave this tranquil place. It was so hard to tell sometimes-with Ty Lee especially.
With that Chin Mae was very still, his memories wandering in an easier time-his childhood. His gaze was locked out over the horizon, over the pool and toward the setting sun, that was quickly casting them in deep shadows. But he didn't see any of that. He saw young Zuko playing with his mother by this very pond-and Chin Mae remember it well-for he had hovered several feet away for a long time- and then he had just left-so as to not distirb their moment. Chin-Mae had been a very lonely child.
"Her essence? Hm I don't know about that." Chin Mae said quietly, tilting his head to one side, his eyes returning to the image. "I painted her from memory, I remember that smile so well-she was always so free-so gentle. She always had time to ease the hurts of someone else-no matter what was going on in her own life. She was one of a kind-or very nearly." He said quietly, turning his gaze on Ty Lee at that moment.

| QUOTE (Chin Mae @ Sep 9 2008, 04:42 PM) | | |
Plucking a blade of grass nearly the shade of the kingdom’s most prized jade, Ty Lee twirled the small frond within her finger tips and nodded while he described the beloved Fire Lady.
The young woman was pleased to learn that she was not the only one to sense Ursa’s presence within this isolated refuge. When Chin-Mae’s lids drifted downward in self reflection, her smoky eyes took in every feature upon the secret artist’s face and noted a slight wince before his riveting silvery blue orbs popped open to lock with hers.
Ty Lee’s cheeks instantly turned rosy at being caught rudely staring. She abruptly tilted her head backward to look up at the shadow- filled sky which was hastily transforming from day’s end to approaching night.
“Yes…” the acrobat breathed. “ ..she was the only one who truly… listened.” Lowering her head to peer at the portrait once more, she continued, ”I believe your memories are as sharp as your blades, Chin Mae.” A few moments of silence passed as the sound of crickets chirping, rustling leaves and waves echoing from the far off shoreline began the evening’s concert once again. “I hate that it took her leaving ..to truly understand her worth.”
“She was one of a kind-or very nearly." He said quietly, turning his gaze on Ty Lee at that moment.
Time halted for a brief moment as their eyes met once again and the last of the glowing blood red sphere marked the approaching hour of dreams. “ I’ve never known one as generous or kind … But if you do, my friend,..keep them close so you never loose them. “ The chi fighter whispered softly before looking down at his drawing and tracing the image with her index finger. “I….I’d really like a picture of her …if you ever get the chance to make another.” Once the words escaped, the brunette shook her head and smiled brightly to cover her forwardness. ”I mean…I’ll pay you for your time. I would be honored to possess one of the soon to be famous Chin Mae‘s drawings!”

"My memories haven't faded much, I'll give you that. But hen, those years made quite an imprint on me. Its hard to forget things that mark you so strongly." As he spoke his silvery blue eyes darked to a stormy gray, then lightened again to their original color, as if the change had never been.
"Ty Lee- Its fine really, I wouldn't mind drawing you one. If I could get it to be as perfect as you say this one is-I would be pleased to let you have," Chin Mae said quietly.
"No, I wouldn't ask for payment. Think of it as a gift between friends, when it happens. Besides, asking payment may bring me to the attentions of the Princess- or Ozai, something, concidering my favorite subject, I would prefer to avoid. I do not think Ozai would be happy that I have spent so much time trying to perfect her image, do you?" Chin Mae said gently. He seemed calm in the quickly fading light. This was one of his favorite times of day.
"Famous," Chin Mae began, then he laughed softly. "I doubt it-I'm not really that good-and I-...." Chin Mae paused shaking his head, "I'm not good enough to even think about selling most of my paintings- and I doubt anyone's going to approach me with a commission out of the blue-people onl;y do that with famous painters. No-I think my art will remain obscure." He said glancing toward Ty Lee, then back toward the pool at his left.
He took a deep breath and glanced back at the Princess who seemed to be smiling at him, just as she had done many times to Zuko. That warm, summery smile that no other Fire nationer possessed. Yes, that was how he remembered the Lady.

The fluctuation in the young man‘s chi was subtle but Ty Lee’s eyes narrowed when he spoke of forgetting things that marked one’s spirit. ‘What memories have touched him so deeply that they bring forth such emotion? Is it anger? Pain? It seems his relationship with Ursa goes far deeper than mine..’ “I was …so young when she left but I’ll never forget how inconsolable Zuko was while Azula ..well she acted like….like she’d almost expected it to happen. I never understood why Ursa left them….us” Ty Lee’s said softly a tinge of childish anger seeping out.
Ty Lee- Its fine really, I wouldn't mind drawing you one. If I could get it to be as perfect as you say this one is-I would be pleased to let you have," Chin Mae said quietly.
The gymnast’s demeanor quickly brightened at his kind offering. No one had ever given her such an uniquely exceptional gift; the greatest being his friendship.
When Chin Mae mentioned bringing their exchange to Azula and Ozai’s attention, her smile abruptly faded for she knew that the Fire Nation warrior’s fears were well founded. The young woman lowered her head in shame for it seemed she would forever pay the price for her selfish desire to gain attention…to have others finally realize that she existed. Her path was now bound to choices made so very long ago which with time had become rigidly fixed. No matter how hard she ran from that youthful mistake, the leash remained tightly bound about her neck just waiting for the Princess to tug her back. “No…you’re right of course. Ozai and Azula would not be ..pleased. ”
Jumping to her feet in agitation, Ty Lee walked toward the eight foot stone wall that marked the garden’s border. It had been made to keep those within from slipping over the mountain’s edge and falling thousands of feet to their death. She leapt with ease onto the uneven ledge and began to saunter across the precarious barrier. Whenever the acrobat felt the walls of her self -made prison moving in to sufficate, she would vear ever closer toward the edge of peril.
"Famous," Chin Mae began, then he laughed softly. "I doubt it-I'm not really that good-and I-...." Chin Mae paused shaking his head, "I'm not good enough to even think about selling most of my paintings- and I doubt anyone's going to approach me with a commission out of the blue-people only do that with famous painters. No-I think my art will remain obscure." He said glancing toward Ty Lee, then back toward the pool at his left.
“Don’t say that!! Don’t ever say that you’re not good enough…you are!! “ She snapped while spinning her body back in his direcction;the words which bled within her own soul echoing through the damp evening air. “Look again at the picture Chin Mae. It’s beautiful and you know Ursa would think so as well.” The teenage girl gave a small stomp to accentuate her statement and in an effort to gain his assent to her statement only to find him staring, eyes glazed into the dark pool. "I'll be honored to have one of your pictures." she ended fevently before turning outward to look below at the small dots of flame being lit throughout the city. Her long rope of hair fluttered like a flag caught by the sea's updraft.
"It will be something to look forward to ..when I get back." she added softly.

“I was …so young when she left but I’ll never forget how inconsolable Zuko was while Azula ..well she acted like….like she’d almost expected it to happen. I never understood why Ursa left them….us”
She left- because I don’t think she really had a choice. Many things happened that night that can not be explained except by this: Azulon was in perfect health when he died-and that night she slipped away into the night. I, at least, can’t help but think that the two must be connected somehow,” Chin Mae said quietly, tilting his head to one side slightly as his expression turned thoughtful.
“Azula-well, she is a very closed person. I don’t think that she would let anyone know if her mother’s leaving actually hurt her-she would see it as a weakness and there for aim to destroy it, or at the very least hide it. But then again, maybe she just hated her mother that much-maybe she really doesn’t care about the fact that her mother just disappeared one night.” Chin Mae added moments later, his voice sounding very thoughtful.
“And Zuko’s reaction-well, that was to be expected, wasn’t it? Zuko clearly cared very much for Ursa-she was his balance in this unstable world.” Chin Mae’s last words were clearly thought through- this wasn’t something that had come upon him suddenly-no he had been thinking about this for a long time. It was a good thing that Iroh had the heart to take over with Zuko-or we’d have had a mini-Ozai on our hands. Chin Mae thought, but this he kept clearly from his face.
“No…you’re right of course. Ozai and Azula would not be ..pleased. ”
Chin-Mae’s eyes shifted gold, anger flaring in him at the thought of the Fire Lord and his treatment of Ursa’s disappearance. He had, effectively, named Ursa an unspeakable after she was gone-which further added to his thoughts of what must have happened all those years ago. After several moments the gold faded from his silvery blue eyes, leaving only their normal color, all anger gone for the moment. Chin Mae didn’t allow himself to dwell on his anger with the Fire Lord for more than a few moments at a time, such thoughts were very dangerous.
Chin Mae watched her balance on the wall between the cliff and the garden, shaking his head a little.
“Don’t say that!! Don’t ever say that you’re not good enough…you are!! “ She snapped while spinning her body back in his direcction;the words which bled within her own soul echoing through the damp evening air. “Look again at the picture Chin Mae. It’s beautiful and you know Ursa would think so as well.”
Chin Mae colored a deep red as Ty Lee’s words sunk in completely. “She would-but…Hm never mind.” He said quietly, tilting his head to one side. Thoughtful for a long time. Did this girl really think that he was so good at his art? Really, it wasn’t something most people thought about when that thought of Him. Most people couldn’t get past the fact that he was a strong firebender, much less think about his personal hobbies.
“When you get back?” Chin Mae began slowly, “Where are you going?”

. ’It seems Azula needs my ….assistance once again. I’m not sure exactly where we are headed or why…only that I must go.”
'Ah- Of course, now I see why she came to the garden.' Chin Mae thought as the words sunk in. Ty Lee had always loved this place but often she was too busy practicing to spend much time here, now he understood why she took the time tonight, in the beautiful twilight.
“I guess it’s not so very different for you is it Chin Mae? For you must also go wherever you are sent. Do things..” ‘You wish you hadn’t’ her mind screamed her own internal conflict. “…I mean follow orders as well.”
Even though Ty Lee froze in midsentence to reword, Chin Mae knew exactly what she had been about to say, he nodded to himself for a moment, judging what he should say in responce. For a long time he had thought that Ty Lee, at least, didn't always hold with Azula - and the Fire Nation's - main mantality.
"I know, sometimes following orders is the hardest thing to do. Especailly when the orders themselves go against everything you believe in- everything you hold close to keep you an individual- to keep you sane," Chin Mae said slowly, hoping that he had not misjudged Ty Lee before he had spoken. He took a deep breath and released it slowly there, that was his confession, the thing he had held close to his heart since he was fourteen- since that fateful day those orders had been given.
He still had nightmares about the month or so following the orders. And he was still fully marked for what he had done. Absently, without meaning too, he began to rug the scar hidden by dark red material.
“Why are you down there Chin Mae? “ She let one of her giggles. “You should see the wonders of the Fire Nation at night…”
Those words caught Chin Mae's attention he gave her an odd look. Then shrugged slightly. He moved over to her, then placed about three feet of space between them. Once he was in place he climbed up onto the wall. After just a moment later he stood up from that point, gazing out at the city.
"Aye those words are true. And the things that the moon does not reveal, well, they must be found by stumbleing upon them by accident, or not at all." Chin Mae murmered softly.

"I know, sometimes following orders is the hardest thing to do. Especailly when the orders themselves go against everything you believe in- everything you hold close to keep you an individual- to keep you sane," Chin Mae said slowly,
Lowering her head, she stared down at the well known Fire bender and soaked in his every word fearful that she’d soon face repercussions for her outspokenness. Ty Lee slowly released the air she’d been nervously holding when he agreed with her…well at least on having to follow directives that went against one’s personal beliefs. The only problem was that her present position had been one of choice. As a child, she’d done whatever she could to gain the princesses’ favor with the hopes of having those about her finally notice and give her attention. Any attention, negative or positive , was better than none . Oh how wrong she’d been all those years ago…
“Then my sanity was lost long ago..” She said without the slightest tinge of humor as he climbed up beside her on the gray stone barrier. The Acrobat wondered if the wall had really been made to keep those locked within instead of their enemies out?
“And the things that the moon does not reveal, well, they must be found by stumbling upon them by accident, or not at all." Chin Mae murmured softly. ‘By accident…accident..’ the warrior’s words echoed in her mind and she tilted her head slightly to watch his perusal of the scene below. This was the first time she’d ever shared her secret spot with anyone… The brunette nodded, “And today ..I’m glad I accidentally interrupted your creativity.”
There the two stood peering down..salty air teasing and tangling their hair while she worked up the courage to tell him what truly drew here to the garden tonight of all nights. “ I come here when I need to think …to somehow gain wisdom from Ursa’s spirit that remains within this small alcove.” I’ve heard whispers throughout the Palace guard that…Zuko is the one we will be dispatched to find….” ‘And I don’t want to bring him in to be punished by his father once again!’ She said sadly ..letting her voice drift off to silence waiting to see if he would call her a traitor.

“Then my sanity was lost long ago..” She said without the slightest tinge of humor as he climbed up beside her on the gray stone barrier.
“I don’t think so Ty Lee. The things you have told me tonight-they’ve greatly changed my mind about ‘you’ or more importantly, the thing people view as you, where they under stand it or not. You’re not insane-just trapped in a web of repercussions from decisions you made years ago.” Chin Mae said, turning his head to face her. Then he turned his gaze to the city itself. With its own walls, its own people—it was practically its own world compared to the palace that loomed above it.
“I wonder what this barriers true intentions were when they created it. It seems—sometimes that it was less to keep things out, and more to keep things in, doesn’t it Ty Lee?” He said, but this time he didn’t look toward her his eyes were focused out on the bay, his expression was thoughtful.
His gaze wandered back toward the city where he noted the torches burning and the rare person stepping into the light. No one was easy to see, and from this height, it was impossible to tell who was who. Chin Mae, for once, seemed calm and centered. But what she said in the next moment shattered that calm stability.
Chin Mae turned on the stone wall carefully, so that he was facing her completely. He studied her face, her eyes, and her stance. These were the things he had learned long ago allowed you to understand part of what a person was feeling. “I have heard those whispers to-and I believe them. Ozai has grown distasteful and inpatient in regards to not-so-young-anymore Prince Zuko and General Iroh.” With the look on his face it was impossible to tell what he actually thought of her words.
“I think, that you speak from your heart, and not from an attempt to trick me into admitting something for which Azula and Ozai would kill me for, so I grant you this: Ozai’s treatment of Zuko was without reason and cruel. The premise of banishing a thirteen year old boy for not attacking his father was horrible all on its own. But not only that, Ozai scared that child—permanently for no good reason other than NOT attacking him, most parents punish their kids for lashing out at them—not refraining from doing so.
“Furthermore Ozai has not only no reason, but no right to send someone, much less Azula, to hunt Zuko, and to kill or capture him. Ozai has overstepped his authority. Zuko isn’t within Fire Nation waters, therefore Zuko, according to the terms of the banishment, does not currently exist. Through that logic, Ozai can’t be sending people after him, of course, he IS-but we won’t get into that line.” Chin Mae said quietly, his eyes never leaving her face. Now he could only wait, and pray to all the spirits that he did not misjudge the young Acrobat.
