Title: Wormer Help
Description: Which One?

LucaKerberos - October 24, 2011 08:35 PM (GMT)
I recently purchased a horse, and his previous owner said he was due for de-worming in October, and that he was scheduled for Strongid (which is the Pyrantel Pamoate stuff). I'm going to order online and have it shipped because I'm also ordering vaccines, but I was wondering if the following two items are the same, and would it matter if I gave him the cheaper one:

Exodus Paste
Strongid Paste

Thanks~

Call your vet. You'll get information and it will help establish a relationship with him or her.

There are a few theories on deworming.
1.) Rotating de-wormers. Basically de-worming every other month with different types of de-wormers. However, more recent research is showing this may be contributing to resistance in the parasites.

2.) Having a fecal done. The vet analyzes some poo and tells you what's present and you pick a de-worming product based on that.

If looking at switching de-wormers that have the same product, look at ingredients, amounts, and purpose. (Actually, that can apply for any product.)

COTH may actually be a better venue to ask. You can get a lot of information and opinions. I'm not saying HMF doesn't know anything, I'm saying COTH is more active currently and there are many professionals located there.

I don't know how much experience you have with horses or horse ownership, but do you have a trainer? Do you board?

I've got 12+ years horse experience and I previously owned an Appy mare a long~ time ago. I was just curious as to whether there was a real difference between wormer brands (between the same type of dewormer). I never really thought about it before, but now that finances have become tight, I'm starting to look at ways to cut costs, and a cheaper dewormer might help. I used to do a 3-month rotational on my mare, and I'll check with my vet to see if I can do the same with Conor.

For these two products, it has the same amount of Pyrantel Pamoate in it, so I don't think there's any difference between either one, just one is more well-known than the other. :)
