Chanel awoke with a chilling start: her eyes focused to a nearly dark room, the bed sheets were twisted around her. She was alone, suddenly feeling uncontrollably small. The clock on the wall read well after 11 PM; she was small, vulnerable, and cold. Her swollen eyes ached. He still wasn’t beside her. She had been alone all these hours since returning.
“Nick!” she cried, praying he would hear her somehow, but in her ears, her sore voice only echoed off the thick walls of the room they shared.
Finding solace in the downy bed once again, she cocooned herself within the sheets and thin blankets, thinking that the soft, barely audible footsteps she heard were a figment of her imagination. |
