Appearance:

Ash is what you would call “classically beautiful.” She has high, fine cheek bones and delicate features. Her nose is very small and upturned, her eyes are large and framed by dark lashes and narrow brows, and her deep pink lips are as full as those of a child. She is most proud of her skin, which is a fine, pale ivory, devoid of freckles, and sometimes with a faint pink tint in her cheeks. She’s been told that a fair complexion is the epitome of beauty in many cultures, so she has never wished it away or tried to go out in the sunlight. In her mind, a tan would ruin her. Her father told her when she was young that snow-white skin was a fine feature, one that was particularly boasted by the purest blood, and that many a witch would die for her skin.

She has light red hair that she prefers to wear long. One of her trademark habits is flipping her hair over her shoulder and tossing her head when she’s frustrated with someone (or any time, really). Her eyes are an intense, silvery grey-blue that resemble ice in their cool color. Her eyes suit her because they are cold and exceptionally observant, like she is. She doesn’t like to wear makeup (even of the magical variety) because she thinks her features are strong enough on their own. Besides, applying that gunk all over your face is a waste of valuable time that could be spent hexing people in the corridors!

Ash has always been a tiny slip of a thing. Standing just at five feet, she’s almost always several heads shorter than anyone else in the room. Her younger brother is taller than she is, for God’s sakes! She is slender and delicately built, resembling a porcelain doll. She has a long neck and small, childlike hands and feet. To add to her wispy frame is her boyish figure and almost complete lack of womanly definition. Yes, there are slight curves at her hips and thighs, and yes, she’s not totally flat beneath her blouse anymore, but these definitions are not enough to speak of. Her body is very graceful looking, and the appearance of such is emphasized by her exceptional posture and sense of regal bearing. It is rare to see her trip or stumble over anything.

Surprisingly, despite her tomboyish demeanor, Ash has a preference for delicate, ladylike clothing in soft colors, such as powder blue, ivory, and lavender. She loves dainty princess dresses adorned with lace and pearls, classic accessories such as brooches and pendants, long evening coats, and elaborate dress robes. Her uniform always looks crisp and lies immaculately, without wrinkles or folds (although she enjoys the carefree chic look of having her tie loosened and her blouse untucked a bit—her robes always look tidy, though). However, she is not above throwing on an old pair of grungy black robes to have at a duel with the boys.

Another surprise is her voice. She speaks very softly, with a sweet, high pitched girly soprano. Her accent is very upper class, old-money English, and she speaks eloquently and slowly. Her words imply that she is very well read and just as well bred (sorry about the rhyme), and her sugary tone suggests that her mind is full of rainbows and unicorns. This is why the harsh words that pour out of her mouth are such a shock. Although meant to be biting, it is almost impossible for anything she says to sound caustic, which makes them all the more eerie.

Her absolute worst flaw is her choice of facial expressions. She either looks haughty and acts as though there is a foul smell in the room, or she may look blasé and painfully bored. The latter is the most common. Smiles are few and far between for Ash, and they are reserved for the closest of her close friends. When dressed in her schooling attire, she looks like an intelligent, scholarly girl who looks down upon those who can’t keep up. When in her own ladylike clothing, she appears to be the regal, delicate aristocrat you don’t speak to unless you are her equal. So basically, she radiates a fairly haughty disposition.

Personality:
Ash is well known for being bitingly sarcastic. Having a conversation with her is a similar sensation to downing an entire jug of straight bleach. Yeah, she’s that harsh. While it may seem like she’s being a bitch, it’s really just her favorite defense mechanism. When her mother left, Ash promised that she would never put too much faith in any one person ever again, or let them get close enough to hurt her. She is very cold and calculating, and generally prefers to detach herself from any kind of excessive emotional displays. She only shows affection to her friends, and even then it is a carefully controlled amount. Sadly, she’s been so cold for so long that the only surviving evidence of her once loving personality is her adoration of animals. She absolutely loves creatures of all shapes and sizes, and pours all of her excess affections into her owl, Rainer.

Ash is a school-reknowned know-it-all. She has a ravenous hunger for learning, and she devours every new spell or potion that is thrown at her. Therefore, she finds classes incredibly boring and she looks down on those who can’t keep up with her pace. She is famous (or maybe infamous) for two things: her temper and her hexes. People have now gotten to the point where they’ve realized that it would be a really, really bad idea to piss her off because it’s quite a possibility that as soon as they turn around they’ll grow scales and sprout a tail. In fact, she sent one kid to St. Mungo’s for three weeks in her Fourth Year. That kid still hasn’t told anyone it was her.

One of her pet peeves is when boys think she’s weak. She feels like she constantly has to prove herself because of her gender and size. When a guy says something like, “Why don’t you go comb your hair, princess?” during a duel, he had better start getting used to the idea of having a severe crop of boils sprout all over his face. That’s another thing; when her mother left, her father was all she had for a while, so she got very tomboyish very quick. She’s never afraid to roll her sleeve up and get her hands dirty. Dueling is one of her favorite pastimes because it is a sport that is both mental and physical. It holds her attention much better than Quidditch, which bores her to tears. She’s very competitive and hates to lose anything, whether it is a duel or the highest grade in class.

Deep down, part of Ash pities the Muggles. While she’s spent the last seven years acting like she hates them (and for the most part has somewhat convinced herself that she hates them), the little voice in her hand sometimes makes her feel guilty when she sneers as a Muggle-born student passes by or when she talks about joining the rising Dark Lord to force the Muggles into servitude. Part of her just wants to please her father, because he’s all that she has left. The other part of her secretly hopes that the rumors about a wizarding war are just that—rumors. She doesn’t really want the purebloods to be all that’s left. And on one hand, she’s still angry and hates her mother more than she’s ever hated anyone, but on the other, she still has that childish longing for her return. However, if her mother does come back, she hopes that she won’t be there to see Ash the way she is now: bitter, cold, and so eager to please her family that she would sign her life over to be used as a weapon.

History:

Ash was born into one of the most stable, comfortable environments a young wizarding child in Britain could ever have dreamed of. While Ursula and Quinton Vaisey were wed through an arranged marriage, they enjoyed each other’s company for the most part and were happy. They lived in the luxurious and spacious Vaisey Manor, and they were able to supply their children with all of the creature comforts in the world. Their only real quarrel came with their opinions on Muggles; Quinton kept a very traditional, superior attitude toward them, while Ursula was much more forward thinking and argued for Muggles’ rights. Quinton liked to “dabble” in the Dark Arts a bit, much to Ursula’s disgust, and she chose to annoy him by attending pro-Muggle conferences and equality broomstick derbies to publicly voice her opinions on the matter.

Ash’s brothers Hugh and Armando were greatly influenced by their father, so by the time they went to school they shared in his opinion. They became exactly the kind of arrogant, cold bigots that Ursula so greatly despised. Therefore, she concentrated the rest of her efforts on Ash, starting to persuade her to be more open toward Muggles at a very young age. She succeeded. Ash became the sweet, loving, and caring daughter Ursula had always wanted. She loved to laugh and smile and was particularly fond of Muggle kiddie entertainment, such as coloring and watching Scooby Doo every evening. Ursula was thrilled, and Quinton was…not.

After Ash turned eight, a certain air of suspense began to fall over Britain. There were whispers of a new dark wizard rising to power, possibly to surpass even Grindelwald or Dumbledore. After a Muggle family in the county had been entirely obliterated in their home, Ursula feared for the worst—another attempt at genocide by the purebloods. At this time, Dark Magic became more than a hobby for Quinton Vaisey; it became an obsession. He was constantly in his study researching the most twisted, evil spells and potions and was closely following the increasing power of the mysterious dark wizard. He and his sons recognized it as a pivotal time to team up with the other purebloods, to unite together to root out the source of corruption in wizarding lineages. He considered seeking out the Dark Lord and joining his army, and convinced Hugh, a Sixth Year, and Armando, a Third Year, to consider doing the same when they left Hogwarts. It was a time to prove your true allegiances, after all!

This made Ursula absolutely sick. She wasn’t sure when her husband had become so corrupt with the fantasy of power, or where she had gone wrong to allow him to taint the minds of her children. Even little Ashlynn was showing an increasing fascination with her father’s grotesque spellbooks and stomach-churning dark artifacts. What was she to do? She thought that there was no way to combat this approaching evil while she was still at Vaisey Manor, so Ursula did what any desperate champion for justice would do—she fled. Never mind the fact that she left two teenagers, a nine year old daughter, and a toddler in her wake, leaving her only daughter merely with a note that read, ”And I hope that you will remember what I taught you.”

Ash was the most affected by her mother’s abandonment. She was completely distraught, even traumatized. How could her mother just leave? Was there something wrong with her? She was an incredibly bright child for her age, and it took her no time at all to discover Ursula’s motives. Ash grew angry and spiteful toward her mother—it didn’t even take long for her to hate her. Thus, as a badge of denouncing her former maternal figure, Ash immersed herself in her father’s studies of the Dark Arts. Before she was even enrolled in school, she was well-versed in some of the most unpleasant hexes and curses known to wizards.

Quinton Vaisey was delighted at his newest pupil. He introduced her to the traditional opinions on the treatment of Muggles and Mudbloods, and before long she was hissing derogatory terms at every non-magical person she saw and wrinkling her nose like she smelled something particularly foul. He began to train her in theories of Transfiguration, Potions, Charms, Dark Arts, and Herbology, as she was not allowed to use magic. When she started school, teachers were amazed by all of the prior knowledge the child had obtained. She enjoyed the challenges they threw at her and had an intense hunger to learn more. When she got a bit older, her father would take her out to the garden during the holidays and teach her dueling and the most sinister magic that she wouldn’t find in her school books. Yes, Quinton Vaisey was training his daughter as a weapon.

Now, let’s back track a bit to the night young Ash sat beneath the Sorting Hat on her first night at Hogwarts. Her mother had been a Gryffindor, yes, but the rest of her family had been in Slytherin, including her brothers. Surely she would follow suit, right? Wrong. She hadn’t even been on the little stool for five minutes before the hat bellowed out, “GRYFFINDOR!”

Ash was completely mortified. Her father would be so disappointed. And she just knew that Armando was sinking down in his seat, hiding his face and denying any relation to her. It just had to be a mistake! There was no way… She should have been in Slytherin! She started sobbing right there on the platform, screaming about wanting a “refund,” and the Professor supervising the sorting had to guide her to the table that was adorned with scarlet and gold banners and tell her to “just make the best of it.” Ash grudgingly plopped down on the bench and refused to speak to anyone in her House for an entire week.

Even now, Ash is somewhat bitter about her placement. She prefers to keep company with her friends in Slytherin House, who refer to her sorting as “a brain malfunction on that sodding hat’s part.” However, she does prefer the comfortable, homey feel of the Gryffindor Common Room to the dungeons the Slytherins reside in.

Other Notes:

Ash is completely terrified of an arranged marriage. She knows it’s inevitable, as her father wants the bloodline to remain pure, but she still gets sick at the very thought of marrying someone when she has no say in the matter. Her father and stepmother have been mulling it over for the last few years, and now she is getting closer and closer to a suitable age for betrothal. It seems like her life is a freaking time bomb.

Skill Testing Question: EFFING AWESOME PEEPS!

Example Post:

“Bother,” Ash moaned as she tipped her bottle of ink over into her lap. She muttered a brief string of mild curses before she pulled out her wand and said, ”Scourgify!” in a commanding voice. The ink on her skirt and dripping off the edge of the desk disappeared at once, though she had a lovely black stain on her skirt. Splendid. She prodded her mind for a spell that would remove unsightly discolorations, but her mind kept coming up blank. Perhaps one of the Mudbloods would have some sort of Muggle potion that would do the trick. What was it called… Detergent? Or something of that variety. Nasty stuff, probably, and most certainly not as effective as a spell, but if only she could think of something!

An obnoxiously loud snicker came from behind her, and she whipped around in her seat to see two Sixth Year boys hunched over on the cushy scarlet sofa of the Common Room. One had his hand over his mouth and was shaking with suppressed laughter, and the other was pantomiming knocking something over. The second boy, whose back was facing her, let out a loud, dramatic gasp.

“Oh nooooo!” he cried in a poor, squeaky imitation of her voice. “Rancid ink! Oh bother!”

He acted out throwing a hissy fit like a toddler would do by stamping his foot and crossing his arms. The first boy managed to hold back a cackle and clapped his hands softly. The second boy bowed repeatedly to his friend’s applause until the first said, “Oi, Rob, she’s watchin’!”

It took everything Ash had not to cross her arms disapprovingly the way the boy had mimicked. She sucked in one side of her cheek as Rob turned around—it would keep her from losing her cool. She tapped her foot and cleared her throat to demonstrate that she had seen his entire act.

“You like my little show?” Rob asked cockily. “Thought it was spot on, myself.”

“Definitely. I think your next act should be about who your friend’s going to need a mop to clean you up off that floor in a minute,” Ash replied stiffly.

“Aww. Ben, I think we hurt her feelings!” Rob said over his shoulder in the same whiny, off-key voice that was supposed to be an imitation of hers. He bent down so he was eye level with her—literally bent down, as he was nearly a foot taller than she—and said, “What ya gonna do, Vaisey? Am I supposed to be scared?”

Ben howled with laughter, and Rob continued by saying ,”Come on, bring it, Ashie-kins!”

Ash turned around and started putting her Potions book and parchment back into her book bag. She tried her best to ignore the jeers of the two boys, telling herself that they weren’t worth the detention.

“Looks like Dragon Lady is all talk and no walk—“

“Petrificus Totalus!” Ash shouted as she turned back around, brandishing her wand.

She waited a moment for the blood to quit pounding in her ears and for her heart rate to return to normal. Easy does it… That’s it the soothing voice in her head instructed. She ignored the heavy thunks on the floor as the two rigid bodies crashed to the floor. She finished gathering her school items and then slipped through the portrait hole, leaving the two boys alone in the Common Room.
