Welcome To St. B's!

St. Benedict's Home for the Mentally Unfit and Addicted

St. Benedict's was originally an asylum established in the early 1850s. It was named after the patron saint of mental illnesses. As the times changed so did St. B's. Slowly over the years, St. B's became less like an asylum and more like a rehab center. The administration began accepting residents with server addictions between the ages of 20 and 30. It became much less church oriented, but still keeps its name out of respect to its history. These days there's a lot more to the halls of St. Benedict's than just junkies and psychos ... what exactly goes on is something you'll just have to find out on your own.

Max really didn't feel like eating this food right now, but since it was so much quicker than going out to eat, he kind of had to. Unfortunately. He was really craving chicken wings right now, but the closest thing they had to that was a burger. Oh well, he didn't exactly mind burgers. He took one and plopped it into his plate, scootching his tray over to where the condiments were. Precious ketchup, there we go... nice and easy now. And next, the mayonnaise. There was no good burger without mayonnaise, Max thought to himself as he glopped it on.

There we go, the perfect burger. Except there was no lettuce left, but he'd have to do with a burger with no crunch. Oh well. Max scootched his tray down the line even more and grabbed a piece of chocolate cake. Yumm. If there was any good food in the cafeteria, it was the chocolate cake. And, lucky him, for he had a slice that was straight out of the oven. Mmm, he could still feel the heat on the ceramic plate, although that could just have easily been from the bright lights above, shining on anything and everything it could reach.

After grabbing a soda (not that he needed any sugar, mind you), he picked up his tray and looked around for a table. Ahh, there was one! Sure there was someone sitting there, but he didn't really care. He couldn't see the person's face, so he couldn't tell who it was, but he hoped it was a girl. He rather liked girls, and they liked him. Well, the ones here at St Benedict's did anyway, but most of them were addicted to sex. Not that he minded that; that was a huge plus point from his point of view. After all, the more the merrier, right? Or something to that affect anyway.

So back on topic, Max decided to go sit down across from the mystery person. He walked around so he was standing by the vacant seat right across from them. "Mind if I sit here?" he asked, flashing a charming smile.

Tired didn't come half close to how Angela felt today. Drained more than summed it up. She hadn't been sleeping right in the past couple of days, and it showed to those who knew her well enough. Where she usually was the sparkly cheery one now she sort of dragged around looking as if she was going to fall asleep in the next few seconds. The smell of food though kept her moderately awake even though she had no intention of eating it. The only thing she was getting acoomplished was reading a novel she had in her left hand.

She glanced over at the cake, and tilted her head to the side wondering for a moment if she should taste it at all. She rarely ate in here unless she was pressed for time, or too hungry to waste time going out to eat since she was neither she had thought against it, but she loved chocolate so she decided to give it a shot. She wiped her finger across the top getting som eof the icing, and looked at it deciding it looked edible at least she thought with a half smirk, and put her finger in her mouth tasting it. It wasn't half bad not the best chocolate she had, but still pretty good.

She heard a voice, and looked up her finger still in her mouth. Shen she saw it was someone talking to her she quickly pulled her finger out of her mouth, and gave an embarrassed smile. She shook her head, and gestured with her other hand that held the book toward the seat, "No I don't mind go right ahead sorry about that," she said with a small laugh wiping her finger off with a napkin. She balled it up and tossed it onto her tray smiling politely.

Max gave a quiet chuckle as he saw the girl, who had wiped some of the cake icing with her finger and stuck it into her mouth. When she said the seat was available, he sat down there, placing his tray in front of him. "Is the cake good?" he asked, just trying to make conversation. She had been reading when he interrupted her, and he figured that she should have some human interaction, since she seemed to be eating alone. If she was eating, that it; not a single dish on her plate was touched. Except for the cake, which was touched quite literally.

He noticed she looked a bit tired, but as he didn't know her, he didn't think much of it. There was a good number of insomniacs here at St B's, and she might have been one of them, so he decided not to jump to conclusions. Besides, insomnia was something that could come from a lot of mental illnesses, including depression and Bipolar. Or so he had read, anyway.

She gave a small nod, "Yeah it's good, but I loke mostly anything chocolate," she said with a laugh. She shook her head, and put her book down not minding the page. She had read that Frankenstein book too many times, and didn't mind not having her same page. She crossed her legs at the ankles her short black anklet boots giving her the appearance of 5'3 she always liked her heels even though they were impractical for her job.

She extended a small pale hand towards him trying to give her best smile and doing a pretty adequate job considering. The only thing making it different from her usual smile was the lack of the ever present dimples. "I'm Angela Lecroix nice to meet you...," she said leaving a pause so he could put in his own name and grett him properly. One thing she had learned from her family if nothing else was fake it till you make it so if she played good mood she hoped she'd eventually get there.

Max chuckled. "Me too, actually. Love chocolate." He picked up his fork and used the edge to slice of a piece of the cake before picking it up with his fork and putting it into his mouth. Mmm, it did taste good. He chewed and swallowed, then took a sip of his glass of milk. Chocolate cake and milk just tasted good together. He had no idea why; it was like a peanut butter and jelly thing.

"Jacob Keys. But call me Max." he cut in at the appropriate time, shaking the hand she'd extended for him. "Nice to meet you too." Now normally, he wasn't so very formal, but if she was going to be formal, he would have to be too, or she'd think he was insane. Or, er, weird, since he was already in an asylum, and obviously therefore already considered insane.

She gave a small laugh when he said he loved chocolate at least she wasn't alone in her craving she thought to herself. She took his hand shaking it in return, "Max. Well it's nice to meet you Max," she said politely. She was always polite to people inside the asylum because she considered them just that people. It always irritated her how some people would act like they were wierd, or contagious so she would do the exact opposite besides as a nurse she had touched much worse.

She took her hand back laying it in her lap, and glanced over at the food thinking ofr a moment on whether she should eat it or not then shrugged her delicate shoulders turning back to Max, "So how long have you been here with us exactly I usually recognise some residents, but you don't seem to register with me," she said curiously. She met most of the pateints either due to injury or having to need some type of medication he must not have needed either then considering she hadn't seen him.

"Three years or so." Max said when she asked how long he'd been here. "so pretty long, but not as long as some of the people, who've been here all their lives." he said. He took the had he had used to shake hers and picked up his fork, sliding another piece of the cake into his mouth.

It wasn't until then that he registered that she wasn't a patient. She was a nurse, that's right. He thought he had seen her in the nurse's office one day when he passed by there. Since he had a personality disorder (which was incurable), he didn't have to take any medication, and therefore he had no need to see the nurse. He ate healthy and took a lot of vitamins, so other than the minor cold, he hadn't gotten sick in a long time.

It was unusual to him to see a staff member in the cafeteria, but considering he usually sat and spoke with his resident friends, it struck him that staff members probably ate in here more often than he noticed. Either that, or they all preferred going out to eat. He wondered why Angela wasn't doing the same; she didn't seem to be in a hurry.

She gave a small laugh shaking her head, "Another person who's been here longer than me there are a lot of those here," though she had been here two years for some that was an extremely long time. It was actually a rarity for her to see a patient that was here for a shorter period of time, or at least if there are some they haven't crossed her path yet which she supposed was a good thing.

She noticed him looking at her a bit curiously, and shifted in her seat feeling a bit uncomfortable. She pushed a strand of hair behind her ear a nervous gesture, and folded her hands neatly in her lap, "Is something the matter," she asked curiously a small polite smile on her face even if she felt a bit nervous there was no reason for it to show in her face she figured.

Max chuckled. "Why, how long have you been here?" he asked. He guessed she was relatively new. Maybe a year or two, while most of the staff had been here longer. Well, the doctors had, anyway. Even most of the patients had been here longer than two or three years.

Max bit his lip when she asked if something was the matter. She was feeling uncomfortable, obviously. "Oh nothing, it's just ..." he paused. "I've never seem a staff member eat here unless they were in a hurry." he shrugged. "Well that, and I spaced out." he added with a laugh, trying to make the situation less awkward.

She smiled her shoulders relaxing a bit. She rubbed the back of her head, "Not a problem just wondering." She looked up, and towards the left trying to recall how long she had been here. "About 2 years now I believe," she answere hesitantly then shrugged with a smile, "It's 2 I know, but as far as months after that it's anyone's guess." The only thing she remembered really about her first day was wandering around lost for about an hour or two she didn't really know the layout, and by the time she found her way to her office she was too tired from walking to do much else.

She smiled politely, "Nah not a rush laziness actually. I'm just too lazy to go out, and get food, and this was closer," she said gesturing with her head towards the food. Laziness was a half truth she was more afriad she would fall asleep behind the wheel or in line at the drive-thru like last week. People weren't exactly very accomodating to someone who was alseep, and holding up the line for 20 minutes.

Max just nodded when she said she'd been here two years. "Wow. So uh, not as long as most people." he said. Well, even he was here not as long as most people. Then again, most people were here for five or more years. Three was closer to five than two was. And most of the staff had been here even longer than the patients.

He chuckled to himself when she mentioned laziness. "Ahh, I know what you mean. I can be like that a lot too. Or like, if I really want to do something." he paused. "Even something simple. Like once a few months ago, I came here because I was planning to play catch with a friend after lunch, and I was really impatient." he laughed, thinking back. Yeah, he could be impatient at times. Plus, going outdoors and playing catch wasn't as common for patients as it was for normal people.

She gave an actual smile that time the dimples becoming present in her cheeks. It was a good, yet rare thing for patients to go out, and do something other than lay around. "I'm glad you do that it's good to get out every once, and a while it get's awfully dreary in here," she said pursing her lips giving the room a quick perusal.

She knows it was meant to give them a home, but at the same time it had an awfully dreary look to it at times. If it wasn't for that she would probably live on campus, but she didn't think she could honestly handle being in a place so dreary 24 hours a day. Her apartment was modest, but at least there it was a bit more perky. Though she doubted they would give this place lime green walls like her apartment she thought shaking her head.

Max laughed. "Well, I do what I can to keep the sanity I have." he said jokingly. He had always been a pretty active guy, and unless he could stay active, he's probably wilt away. Well maybe not wilt, but whatever happened, it would be dramatic. "I just wish they'd let us play baseball outside or something. They won't let us have bats, and I get that, I guess, but still. I kind of miss it. And watching it on TV isn't the same." he told her.

He gave a sigh. "Hey, at least staffers have the option of living off the campus. We have to stay here. Which is kinda sad for me because they don't even know what's wrong with me, but it's not something sad and slow like everyone else." he told her.
