Title: Random Thinking
Description: What's on your mind?

KaffyMoo - September 5, 2008 11:04 PM (GMT)
Last night, I went to the house of some friends for supper and a games evening. We were joking around and the question of "Where were you born?" came up. For more than half of us (aged between 30 and 40), it turns out that the hospital/maternity home where we were born is no longer in existence. So, out of curiosity, for those of us here, do you know if the hospital/maternity home/building in which you were born is still standing?

I was born at Essex Maternity Hospital here in Christchurch, which was torn down in the late '70s. Apparently it started its life as a "female refuge" for women having their first illegitimate child. "Recidivist women" (the singular of this may become my user title) were not allowed to birth their spawn there. It was simply a maternity hospital when I was born, though.

Edit: Dangit, I can't change my user title (where it says Newbie). Maybe I'll just pop it in my signature for now...

i was born at deaconess hospital and it still exists. my daughter was born at the medical center of central georgia, which also still exists. my son, however, who is just 20, was born at a hospital near here which became an assisted-living facility for a number of years, then offices, and i believe is now torn down.

I was born in Uppsala, Sweden...I'll have to ask my mum the name of the hospital to find out if it's still there!

I have no idea what the name of the hospital where I was born might have been. I was born in a small town named Henderson, which I assume still exists, though I don't think I've been there in sixty years. I'd be surprised, however, if the hospital still stands.

well, this wasn't something i was thinking about, but now i'm all flustercated. i went to get a picture of the prettiest "campus" that was the hospital where i was born, and it's been all modernized. i remember looking it up the first year or two i was around these parts (blog). the original net site was completely different - many pictures of the lovely campus and it's distinctive main and outbuildings.

here's a pic http://www.jaxhealth.com/AboutUs/default.a...5C19C32F97C2210 of the new building.

it was always a brick, several story (low) main building with pretty walkways and a sprawling, relaxed atmosphere. almost spanish in architecture. now, it's become a ginormous concern. yikes. i don't get it. it was an historical site, rather like the jax beach lifeguard station. i'm bummed. totally.

ok. i don't know how to link here.

this is more like the `old' campus. but, i think it's a new structure and landscaping, also.

edit: aha! just the url, then?

oooh, that was a very pretty hospital, Cyn. It's such a shame that some people think newer = better every single time.

Maybe we need a "things we can do here" thread. To make a link (under words), just click on the button above the posting box that says "http://" It will open a small popup that says http:// . Delete that text and you can copy and paste the link location there (Leaving the original http:// in there will give you a double link and it won't work).
Then there will be another popup that asks you what you want the link title to be. Delete the standard text and type in the words that you want to be the link.
Oh, and if you want an image in your post, just click on the IMG button above the posting box and copy and paste the image location into the popup box.

Exempli gratia:
Regular link: (just copied and pasted straight here) If it's a longer link, the board will probably abbreviate it for you, but it will still work just fine. http://icanhascheezburger.files.wordpress....-attractive.jpg

I'm just editing this because of the issue of changing text size. Above the text box there are three drop down boxes for font, size and colour. Mess around with those until you find what you like. You have to put in the /code boxes yourself though, or it won't work. [ / font ] [ / color ] [ / size ] without the spaces.

Exempli gratia.

Green colour, Geneva font, smallest size.

Red colour, Impact font, large size

Blue colour, Times font, largest size

the homepage for the prince george's county hospital says it was built 13 years before i was born so i guess it's the same one...

What on earth is "flood control"?

imelda - September 7, 2008 08:42 AM (GMT)
I only know that I was born In Lynchburg Virginia...NO idea what the name of the hospital was.

bbescuela - September 7, 2008 01:55 PM (GMT)
I was born in the same hospital as my mother and my sister, as well as my aunt, uncle and two cousins. It's still there.

Hi everyone! (thanks for inviting me, judi)

I'm posting here for the first time, so bear with me.

I was born at the "Centro Medico Quirurgico" in Havana, Cuba and I believe it is still there. Both my daughters were born in South Miami Hosp. in Miami and that's still around as well.

Imelda -- as I understand it, "flood control" keeps a person from posting too often and flooding the board with messages by requiring a few seconds between posts. Try posting one after another and you'll get the prompt I got about it.

BTW, anyone notice, besides me, that the number of views for each thread WAY outnumber the number of posts? Lurkers, perhaps?

cyn - September 8, 2008 01:27 AM (GMT)
yeah? How???

i'm kinda creeped out by the `active users' info on the main page. i feel like *I'm* blurking. some one was saying that they guessed their keeping a window open made them look like a blurker alsotoo.

Probably because not everyone comments every time they read a thread. Last heard, all stalkers were heading to the deerstalker hat sale.
