He was a senior, a model student with very good grades. She was a freshman, a bit on the wild side but still willing to learn. Travis, as a school 'veteran', was assigned the task of showing a group of freshmen around campus. Brea, one of those included in his group, spent a good deal of that time flirting, much to his embarassment. That wouldn't be the last he saw of her. She continued to pursue him, until he finally asked her out; it seemed the only way he would be rid of her. However, while out to dinner, Travis saw a new side of her. Brea was truly interesting and different thatn he would have ever thought. A month later and they were in a true relationship.
The two were still dating when Travis graduated. It seemed like a giant roadbump had suddenly loomed up in front of them. Where were they supposed to go now? They decided to try and continue their relationship. Much to their surprise, it worked out better than they ever expected. Brea's graduation came and went and they were still going strong. The idea of marriage both entered their minds. Finally, a few months after her graduation, Travis proposed. And Brea accepted. The pair were married in January the following year. Both ended up teaching in Chicago, their hometown. Gradually they began working their way up the chain. Travis was the first to get a job at Roosevelt; Brea's chance came a few years later.
Babylon Adele Turman was no different than any other baby: cried, giggled, cooed. As all parents, Brea and Travis thought she was the most beautiful thing they could imagine. Then again, they were biased. Just a little bit. Babylon wasn't a very troublesome child. She got along well with other children, and was quite indpendent. Concepts were grasped quickly and, although she wasn't the best, she did pretty well in her classes. No, she wasn't perfect. But her parents continued to love her all the same.
Babylon was four years old when Sai Turman was born. The older girl's initial reaction was thrill. How exciting it would be to have a younger sibling. The first two or three years went by as normal. Then, Travis and Brea began paying more attention, although unintentionally, to the new family member. For some reason, she was taking it much harder than she really should. The years progressed and soon Sai was outshining Babylon in academics, something both parents prided in their children. Babylon felt like she was being pushed more and more away, whether she actually was or not. She felt like nothing she did was good enough, nothing she did was right.
It was a few months after her fifteenth birthday that things really turned south. Although she wasn't one of the most popular girls in school, she was liked well enough to be invited to parties. One of these happened to have alcohol. At first Babylon was apprehensive; she weighed the pros and cons, and the cons certainly seemed worse. With a bit of prodding from her friends she ended up having a drink. And another. And another. Before long she was feeling a little tipsy, a little dizzy, yet still somehow managing to feel prideful. She'd done it. No matter what her parents would think, she'd done it. And nothing they could say or do would change that.
More and more parties came and went, including more binge drinking. Then her sophomore year came. It seemed like those parties were even more wild than those of her freshman year. In Feburary of her second year of high school was Babylon's first encounter with drugs. Just like her first time with alcohol, she was nervous at first. Maybe she shouldn't. Then, as before, her friends convinced her to try some. And then at the next party again. It didn't seem like it took much to get her addicted. She continued to go out late and come home past curfew. Brea and Travis didn't say much, until the drugs entered the picture. Then it seemed that some bottled up fury burst out and Babylon was the target.
They scolded her, telling her that she should be more like Sai. That made Babylon more furious than anything else they could have said. Sai, the perfect little child with the perfect little grades. Babylon was pretty sure that it was safe to say that she hated her little sister. She continued to go to parties, ignoring what her parents said. Regardless, she still felt slightly depressed. And that depression only got worse. Soon she was even cutting not her forearms, but her upper legs. One night she came home, high off whatever drug she had taken; it wasn't like she could remember anyway. She stumbled up to the bathroom, grabbing her razor. Her mother came in a while later, finding her daughter unconscious and bleeding.
As disappointed in their daughter as they were, Brea and Travis had no intention of letting her go. Babylon was taken to the hospital, and they managed to save her. It seemed like this was the wake-up call that she needed. She needed help. Babylon began going through depression, alcohol, and drug therapy. She was eighteen. The process, she expected, wouldn't be easy. But it was still much harder than she could have ever imagined. She stopped hanging out with her 'friends', knowing that that might help. Styling and make-up seemed to help keep her attention elsewhere, so she started putting more focus onto that. Babylon was twenty when she got her job at Broken Mirrors. It gave her that last push to really change, to give her hope. She could turn things around.
