Hi,
I was on holidays in Vienna recently. I visted their Film Museum and discovered they were having a festival called "Destination London" - a season of films about the contribution of Austrian and German emigrants to the British film industry. Naturally I hoped there might be some mention of Anton. Well the bad news was that I had just missed the screenings of 49th Paralell and Queen of Spades (I would love to see that on the big screen). My timing always seems to be slightly off when it comes to shows and exhibitions on holidays. The good news was that I found a new book in the cinema's bookshop. It's called "Destination London, German speaking emigres and British Cinema, 1925-1950), it's edited by Tim Bergfelder and Christian Cargnelli, published by Berghahn Books. And it has a chapter " Anton Walbrook: The Contintental Consort" by Michael Williams. It's an interesting examination of his career in British films with particular reference to his role as Prince Albert and it is worth seeking out. The rest of the book is intriguing. with articles on all kinds of people from actors to designers. The book made up nicely for the disappointment over the films and it was good to bring back a souvenir of Anton from his hometown. Regards S |
