Hey I am not that big of a bird hunter but I do like to hunt doves I been doing it for years. I have a female choc lab that is about 18 months old and a black male tha tis 5 months old. The female loves to fetch but the male has not really got into it. What can I do to get them to where I can use them for retrieving doves??

I emailed our resident dog trainer, Jonesy. He can replay and should be able to give you some pointers. I know almost nothing about retreavers. (I probably know just enough to mess up a good dog!)

Darrell
This is Jonesy's reply...he was waiting on me to authorized his account, so he email it to me... Darrell, whta I would do, is first make sure the dog likes birds, then work into and making sure that its good with the gun. We are gonna do a talk in abington va sept 22, of 08, or we could talk at the banquet...or if you would like, I would be happy to help over the phone, or via email, its all pretty simple work, patience and timing are teh key issues. pm me, and would be happy to pass on my info, ok? thanks bud, Jonesy |

Thanks and I will be getting ahold of you. I do shoot around them pretty often and even took the choc. last year on a dove hunt or two. I would help her find them and then let her pick them up and bring them to me like we do when we are playing fetch. She is not hard mouthed and didn't hurt any of the birds she picked up. But she was only a puppy then. I will get up with you. I will be at the expo on that Saturday so maybe we can talk there as well.
Thanks Darrell |
