Milwaukee archbishop chosen to succeed Egan in NY
http://religionblog.dallasnews.com/archive...-chosen-to.html

Archbishop Timothy Dolan of Milwaukee, a conservative but generally conciliatory Catholic cleric, has been appointed archbishop of New York -- the job Pope John Paul II once characterized as "archbishop of the capital of the world."

Laurie Goodstien of The New York Times (religion writer of the capital of the world?) said Dolan "has a towering frame and a gregarious presence" and "is orthodox in his theology but more likely to use persuasion than punishment on Catholics who do not share his views."

Dolan succeeds Cardinal Edward Egan, who, at 76, is retiring.

"In choosing him," Goodstein writes, "the pope passed over other candidates equally conservative but more confrontational with Catholic priests, parishioners and politicians who question church teaching."

AND DON'T FORGET SOON

THE ARCHBISHOP OF WESTMINSTER

QUOTE
Bishop Bernard Longley being 'talked up' for Westminster

February 22, 2009
http://timescolumns.typepad.com/gledhill/2...estminster.html

Bishop Bernard Longley is being talked about with growing seriousness in Rome as a possible successor to Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor at Westminster. No decision is imminent. Bishop Longley, 53, an auxiliary in Westminster, is not on the terna.

The other outside possibility is Father Allan White OP, former English provincial of the Dominicans and tipped as the next worldwide head of the order, and currently in Rome working in the Curia. The Congregation for Bishops is just starting to look at Westminster, having chosen New York and Rio de Janeiro. I've no idea who's got Rio but Archbishop Timothy Dolan appears to be the choice for New York.

This all comes in a rather complicated context. For just a hint of what this might involve, see Damian's Holy Smoke blog on The Tablet's article by Elena Curti attacking traditionalist priest Father Tim Finigan. Father Tim's own response to Elena's article is here.

For myself, I would simply be over the moon, in heaven or at least in some other divine circle of happiness if either Father Allan or Bishop Bernard were chosen for Westminster, and of the two it seems Bishop Bernard is the more likely. The favourites, Archbishops Smith and Nichols, might still on balance be probable but I understand that they are in danger of 'cancelling each other out' in early discussions. This is allowing these other two new names to move up from the outside. No decision is expected before mid-March, though, so anything could still happen.

Father Allan I once spent a fortnight with in Israel, 15 years ago or more, courtesy of a CCJ trip, when he was a young, fiercely intelligent and devout young friar. Read a bit more about him here.  (Interestingly, a young Father Peter Smith was on the same trip. Of him I thought at the time, 'If only a chatty, personable, smokey type like you could become a bishop, but it will never happen, you're far too normal!') Not that Father Allan wasn't normal of course but I was slightly nervous of him at first, fearful that my own dismal ignorance about so many things including his own Blackfriars in Oxford would be exposed. And I am sure it was anyway, before I even opened my mouth. But I will never forget that formative pilgrimage around so many of the Jewish and Christian holy sites, and his patience in explaining to me the mysteries of faith associated with each of the sites as we spent time there, thinking, praying, talking.

And dare I say this? If he were chosen, the Catholic church would have in England a most telegenic Cardinal Archbishop of Westminster. This is an attribute not to be under-estimated in the modern era. Read some of his sermons here.

But Longley seems more likely, simply because the Dominicans want Father Allan for themselves.

These are the adjectives being used in Rome in talk of Bishop Longley, whose only disadvantage is that he's never been a diocesan. 'But then neither was Basil Hume,' the Cardinals are murmuring in response. Bishop Longley is said to be 'mild-mannered, consensual, faithful to Rome, humble, pastorally skilled, of great depth, huge ability, diplomatic, conservative.'

In Oxbridge circles he's spoken of as, 'Witty, donnish, posh, terribly nice, far too low-profile, traditional.'

Sounds like the perfect British cardinal doesn't he? Aah we can only pray.

The fact that he's not 'in the frame' at all is working in his favour. Interestingly, one leading Westminster source said three years ago: 'Bernard Longley will be Archbishop of Westminster one day.' But the same source has also threatened death to journalists who print Longley's name - in case it ruins his chances.

From a journalist's point of view, he is known as someone who is relatively accessible, reliable and worthy of immense respect.

Interestingly, Paddy Power have closed their book on the succession after a flurry of bets was placed on another favourite Bishop Malcolm McMahon. If it were open I would be strongly tempted to put a fiver on Bishop Longley. Good for my soul, but I fear not for my bank balance, that it's not.

speaking of drunkness and priests, when I was Catholic and went to a Catholic HS the priest who was our principle died about a year ago in a drunk driving accident. I remember he got stabbed by a former student from a school in Kettering known as Alter High School (if anyone wants to look them up) and everyone was up in arms about it. I'm starting to think he abused this kid because why else would this kid come after him but in case of being abused or something else like that. Anyways he's dead and those in the Cincinnati Archdiocese know exactly what he did and they won't tell because he gave some ridiculous vow of secrecy because he said he was in confession at the time of the stabbing so he didn't have to say anything.

I think I know how it goes.

Molest a few kids, say a few Hail Marys for penance, rinse, repeat.

Isn't it about how it goes, though? They're forgiven by a priest, so it's all good.

LOL I wouldn't doubt it and he got off scott free if he really did molest him just like all these other punks did as well. I need to go to the office of the Cincy archdiocese and ask them why all these pedophiles haven't been prosecuted. Then again I think I'll go bullhorn them and tell them to release all their pedophiles or something.

Archbishop Dolan visits the island

Archbishop Dolan arrives bearing hugs
The People's Prelate makes a wonderful first impression at Mount Manresa

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- Archbishop Timothy Dolan knows how to work a room.

A full 70 minutes after he arrived at Mount Manresa Jesuit Retreat House last night, the new leader of the Archdiocese of New York and its 2.5 million Catholics finally made it to the podium where he would speak briefly.

From the time he arrived -- standing outside in the rain to hear several songs played by the Staten Island Pipes and Drums -- until he finally took the microphone, the archbishop shook every hand in the place, hugged every shoulder and posed for hundreds of pictures.

"He seems to be wanting to reach out to everyone, which is good," said Vincent Zaloom of Castleton Corners, who attended the Fort Wadsworth facility's dinner on behalf of the Building Bridges Coalition of Staten Island, an interfaith group.

"I got a hug and everything," shouted Sister Graznya Michniewicz, who works at Monsignor Farrell High School.

"That's the first hug from a bishop in my life," said Sister Maureen Skelly, a retreat director at Manresa. Later, she told the Advance she had gotten a second hug.

The archbishop introduced himself to all the priests in the room, wondering whether they were Jesuits or archdiocesan priests.

"I'm one of yours," said the Rev. John Gulino, pastor of St. Sylvester's Church in Concord. He might have gotten a hug, too.

Catherine (Mac) O'Callahan of Stapleton showed the archbishop her collection of pictures of herself with priests, ministers and rabbis, whom she called her "boyfriends." Archbishop Dolan said he would be thrilled to add his mug to the book.

"This is great, I got a girlfriend," he said. "I'll see you on Valentine's Day."

Archbishop Dolan, a native of Missouri who spent the last seven years as leader of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, said he came to his new post with the usual prejudices about New Yorkers and their famous unfriendliness.

"But it's been tremendous," he said. "People have been so overwhelmingly friendly and welcoming. ... They are the most embracing people I have ever met."

Yesterday marked the archbishop's first two trips to the borough -- he was here earlier in the day for the funeral of Sen. John Marchi. He said he's looking forward to his first official visit to the Staten Island vicariate, although that has yet to be scheduled.

Last night, the archbishop was officially welcomed by Mary Regan, president of the planning committee for the event that celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Jesuit retreat movement; the Rev. Dr. Edward Quinnan, executive director of Manresa; the Rev. Thomas Slon, executive assistant to the New York provincial of the Society of Jesus, and honorary chairmen Denis and Carol Kelleher of Todt Hill.

Then came some gifts. A rendering of the archbishop's coat of arms by Grasmere artist Scott Lobaido; a jersey and baseball cap from the Staten Island Yankees; a subscription to the Advance and a bag full of gifts from the paper, and a special gift for the archbishop's mother -- a Macy's shopper -- from Macy's in the Staten Island Mall, New Springville.

"I'm still your baby bishop," said Archbishop Dolan, who was installed April 15. "I'm moved by the warmth of your welcome. You have made me feel so much at home."

The archbishop said that when he knew he was coming to New York, he looked in a directory of dioceses to see if there were any orders of contemplative nuns here, and to count the retreat houses.

"They give us the strength, they give us the energy to keep going," he said of facilities like the 98-year-old Manresa.

As the archbishop left to attend a dinner with a Franciscan order in Manhattan, Borough President James Molinaro was among hundreds of people giving him rave reviews.

"He's a real person, if you can say that about an archbishop," Molinaro said. "I think he'll bring a whole new dimension."

Observed Lobaido: "He's making religion cool again."
