The Infinite Variety of Music, by Leonard Bernstein.

Some pretty cool stuff. In one chapter, he takes a sequence of four notes (G-C-D-E) and shows how that simple pattern is the basis of, like, a gazillion different works, from Smetana's The Moldau to Westminster Chimes to Beethoven's Pathétique Sonata to Sweet Adeline.
