Title: Sylphy Problem & Help Discussion
Description: Sylphy Problem & Solution Discussion
kong23 - September 24, 2009 08:45 AM (GMT)
Hi all the buddies, i am happy to have this forum as sometime we can help to share our problem and get the issue rectified.
i am the new buyer for Nissan Sylphy. In fact i haven't received a car and to be arrived next month. But i have started to escalate my complaint over to Nissan since i think is too expensive to learn from the bad lesson my forum buddies had. below are summary i have consolidated and sent to Nissan Japan. Hope the previous problems can be solved during my badge and our future Sylphyian fellow friends.
Cc: TCEAS Workshop (Head Office)
Dear Nissan Global CSR Department,
I am new to Nissan brand and this is the first time I have keen interest into it mainly due to CVTC Technology. Recently I have placed the booking for Nissan Sylphy on Sept 5, 2009 after the Test drive. I found out that Sylphy is very comfortable; it comes with quiet engine, plenty of legroom space. It was a very pleasant test drive. A week after my booking, my friend who owned the Sylphy recommended some reliable forums to understand thoroughly about the car. From the forum, many owners feedback throughout Malaysia, which I am surprise that, there are lots of problem with this car since it was first launch on July, 2008.
Owners wasted a lot of times visiting Nissan Service Centre in order to rid of the issues, but unfortunately some root cause of the issues still can’t be rectified and unresolved till today. It's such a shame to hear quality problems like this happening on locally assembled Sylphy. Nissan Japan should perhaps take note and do thorough and more frequent quality auditing on ETCM prior releasing it to market.
Here you go the Malaysia Sylphy problem I have compiled according to problem severity of priority.
TOP 1 Problem: Creaking and rattling noise from the dashboard area
- Infamous "creak-crack" or “rattling” noise all over the dashboard especially goes over the smooth or uneven road. Some were reported that this problem discovers during second months of getting the car, but mostly were discovered after 6 months of driving on the road. The creaking noise sometimes can be really annoying since the inside cabin of the Sylphy is very quiet.
- From So many cases that reported, so far only one owner managed to resolve this problem by padded extra foams underneath the dashboard. According to technician, it was due to loose wires' contact with plastic parts that mounted with dashboard caused the annoying sound. This owner is from Penang and drove down to Ipoh HRC (approximate 250km from area that this owner stay) in order to get his Sylphy problem resolve.
TOP 2 Problem: Steering knocking Sound
- Another deadly problem is the steering has the knocking noise & vibration when owner make a turn whether on smooth or uneven road. Many of them sent their car to service centre for several times but the problem could not be rectified. From the report, most of the centre will just change the new steering coupler but the problem will normally reoccurs after 1 week of part replacement.
- From So many cases that reported, so far only one owner managed to resolve this problem after changing of Steering Shaft.
TOP 3 Problem: Outside emission gas and smells tend to enter the inside cabin
- Outside emission gas and smells tends to enter inside the cabin under the condition be it “ON” or “OFF” the Air-condition and “Air Recycling Mode” is set. The exhaust emission smell is really agitating especially waiting at the traffic light and next to the diesel buses or trucks.
- Quite a numbers of owners having this problem but so far no one find the solution for it.
TOP 4 Problem: Rear/boot Overheating
- The boot area is overheated by the exhaust silencer below the chassis. The temperature reached as high as 70-80 degree Celsius.
Other Common Problems that Reported
- Pimpled on dashboard
- Inferior quality of fragile emblem (Sylphy word). Number of owners reported it get broken during the first month of getting the car.
- Brake pedal 'clicks', not a single click but many clicks, the clicking sounds which sometimes can be really annoying since the inside cabin of the Sylphy is very quiet.
Paying for more than RM100k automobile, it is not a good feeling when a customer choose to ignore the annoying sound because the fear of taking apart the dashboard will inflate more serious annoying sound. Till today, what I like bout this car is the silent engine and smooth gearbox, to the Japanese engineers, bravo! Well done to Nissan. Unfortunately those local assembling work spoilt the party entirely.

wow bro that is long complain, but is damn good lar bro should highlight to japanese guys but still dont know whether they read it ur complain or not. but i do hope they read it.
so far i encounter problem 1, is air cond vent joint rattle at below dashboard
kong23 - September 24, 2009 05:56 PM (GMT)
to me personally in fact all those can are small issues. it can be fixed but just matter of times. bottom line the engine MUST not causing any issue. Especially Nissan gear box is better than Honda just that the outlook design a bit screw-up. That is why i insist to buy it because i convinced it's a good car, equipped with good engine, reliable although some commented that it's a Apek Car (In Hokkian). Be franked as a new babies. i spent lots of time in reading each forum including chinese forum. i hardly see people complain about its engine.
last but not least. i hope all the Sylphyian can make used of this forum to share their experience & lesson. so that we can overcome the issues in short period of times with less hassle.
do invite me if anyone of you organizing Sylphy Clud meet-up session or social linkage in Penang which i can joy you all.

hi alex.
my car already 8k(mileage). I own this car less than 2mth. for time being issue 1-3 never happened. No.4 notice bcoz my tupperware the cover always pop up. about the pimple if I not mistaken the syory like this.
This dashboard is from japan. their weather more cool than ours(correct my if wrong). Pimple happened due to tempature is too high. It will happend if we always park our car outside area.
How I know.
when I working with naza, gurun it also happened to Naza Ria. The material look like same with our car. What we do is, they will drill the dashboard(instrument panel) from inside then they inject some chemical they bring direct from korea.
and about the emblem my sales told me in advance. careful when you wash your car. pls avoid automatic car wash.
xtec - September 25, 2009 05:51 AM (GMT)
Emblem thing is qc check failed by tc, no matter how to take care or wash the coating will still peel off. If came from japan sure no prblem .My peel off after 1 month niah, lousy quality. Must done in boleh land.

Bro u pump at 35psi the car feel very hard/bumpy one ler.
Normally if I drive long distance I will reduce the pressure to 200 due to long distance ur tyre will get hot and will increase the pressure . That why formula one tyre pressure using N2 gas instead of normal compress air.
My suggestion pump at 220 pressures will do for normally driving, more comfort.
shpinx - October 13, 2010 03:12 PM (GMT)
yes bro, 35 psi is hard for me. that y I am not sure which is better.
ask ur advise, 220 is much better and it might be quite than 35 psi if driving.

17" 215/225/45/17 = 210
16" 205/215/55/16 = 220
15" 185/195/65/15 = 230/235
air pressure ikut 45/55/65 ok
spkster - October 14, 2010 03:04 PM (GMT)
Air pressure is subjective. Will depend on what you are looking for, tyre used and road condition. Best is to try out different pressure for yourself. At the same time, do measure your tyre thread depth. If after 10,000km, you noticed the middle and outer part is not wearing evenly, time to reduce or increase pressure confused
Personally, On my 205/55R16 tyres, I pump 235 for front & 220 for rear. My tyre side wall is soft, hence the higher pressure to compensate. :D
Jerryng - October 15, 2010 10:04 AM (GMT)
oh i see...thanks guys... hve to try different and see...find my tyre a bit hard....

Hi all..
I'm also a sylphy owner. On prob no.3, based on my experience, the smell came from an air cond filter. Need to inform during service at ETCM & they have managed to overcome that issue already.
I also discover TOP 1 prob- creaking & rattling sound/noise from the dashboard area. It appear to be on-off mode. Kejap ada..kejap xde..but consistent. Will get ETCM to look in next service.
Another problem i discover on my sylphy is there is a sound came from my rear suspension. It happened mostly while i just to slow down the car at smarttag & about to push the accelerator. I drove car about 20yrs..im sure the sound came from the rear suspension. Maybe the spring or suspension. Will consult ETCM in my next service.
Seems too many mechanical prob..is it due to local assemble & QC not as tight as Japan? It is hardly found such mechanical prob for Japan assembled car...
