Title: Inactivity Issues
Description: Voicing A Concern
Megami - May 9, 2006 02:55 AM (GMT)
You know, I know this has been a recurring problem as happens with just about every forum, but I know that personally I'm getting a bit frustrated with the lack of activity on the board as of late. Of course it's a busy time of year with people graduating school and preparing for finals and whatnot, but seriously... we've got some topics that haven't been posted in in over a month. Everyone gets busy and stuff, myself included, and yeah, sometimes I can't post for a week, but that's why there's an "Away" topic, right?
Anyway, those who aren't posting, whatever their reasons may be... well, they're holding up the game tremendously, and I'm sure I'm not the only one who thinks that. Of course I'm not saying that if someone doesn't post in 3 days that they should be eliminated from the game, but... there's gotta be something we can do about it, right? I'm sure I speak for more than myself when I say I'd like V1 to end pretty quickly, but the way we're going, that doesn't look like it's going to happen.
Even the dice rolls don't really help in this sort of situation, seeing as if someone is inactive when their character is rolled they probably won't make an effort to eliminate said character. I'm not pointing fingers or naming names or anything, but it's really starting to bother me. Anyway, it's been a concern of mine for a while so I thought I'd voice it over the board and see if maybe we could come up with some constructive way to address the problem.
It crossed my mind that maybe if a certain character (not necessarily the handler themselves because sometimes a handler ignores/doesn't have time for one of their characters) is inactive for... I don't know, two weeks, a month, whatever is convenient... then said character should be put up for adoption by either the handlers who've dropped out of the game or the newcomers who haven't had a chance to play. The problem I forsee with this is that it might tick off some of the handlers who want to keep the character around even though they aren't actively participating with them.
Then again, that isn't exactly fair anyway.
Other than that, I can't really come up with any other solution to the inactivity problem except inactivity sweeps, but this late in the game, it's sort of a waste to do that. Either way, I wanted to voice my opinion on the matter and address this problem to the mods and Kai (though I know they're aware). Maybe someone else has a better idea about how to square things away?

I, too, am finding it rather hard to roleplay when there isn't a great deal of activity. Fact is, for the last couple of weeks, most of the activity has been coming from the Other RP boards. THAT, is a problem.
I dunno what to do. To be honest, the only places that have had constant RPing going on are the warehouse, with both groups there, and wherever Scott/Nevera have been off to.
Granted, some people are stuck and waiting on others. That's fine, I'll take that. (I'm one of 'em ATM with Adam/Cody)
But we really need to speed it along, guys.

And to think I gave Maka Eh-Sun because of my inactivity. And I don't really need to say more

What's that supposed to mean?
And I agree wholeheartedly with what's been said. I'm not even in this game anymore and it's frustrating for me, because it really does seem that this game has come to a complete standstill. I mean, come on, we're coming up to the year mark. This version has been going almost a year.
I'm not so much annoyed because I'm not playing, but this just doesn't seem to be progessing. I do think a time limit should be imposed on activity.
(btw, I'm not sure if Kai will see this anytime soon because she's having computer problems or something)

I have a solution!
..Mr Danya yawned "oh how boring is this? no-one's doing anything" so saying, he switched on the microphone that was broadcast over the island "we've lost 70% of our viewers thanks to you guys just standing there, so you lose, buh-bye now" he lifted the lid on the big Red Button o' Doom and pressed it, simlultaniously every collar on the island exploded in a big bang, followed by the rather wet squelch of bodies hitting the floor. Sighing, Danya moved away from the console.
"somebody fetch a mop, they've bled all over the cameras.."
Slayer - May 9, 2006 03:24 PM (GMT)
I think that would be rather anticlimactic, and Danya doesn't strike me as the type to do such things randomly (he's put up with this for about nine days now).

Then seriously now, please don't. <_<
Yeah, I can already get the hint after being haggled on AIM over and over again on posting, Kuze. Thing is, I've been busy with personal and school issues, so I don't really need someone who's been tagged as being inactive to criticise me for MY inactivity.
Yeah, so excuse me if you feel I'm being snappish, but frankly, I'm kind of tired of this.
Anyways, I'll get to posting as soon as I figure out what to do with Eh-Sun. Frankly, I'm not aware of her inactivity undermining the progress of ANY thread whatsoever, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

Yeah it is getting quite annoying, my flagship is stuck in the middle of killing someone because someone has decided not to post for quite a while.
and yeah things are going quite fast with scott, nev and lucinda, and the warehouse, just need to give the people not posting the inspiration to post again, like last time there was a list and if the person didnt post for the student then he would be killed or given away, and within in the first week almost all the list was saved, because they had the inspiration to post, so theres a solution.
Lien - May 9, 2006 05:19 PM (GMT)
All I can say is that I agree. At least if you're going to be dwindling in the posts, take care of your character. That means like kill them off, give them away, or something of the sort. Don't leave 'em there.... With V2 coming along many people are getting anxious to have that body count go up.
But besides Sephy's go boom! theory, which I liked.... my version was a nuclear kablooey!... I bet inactives would be pretty psyched if there was a prize for the V2 if they made their character have the best death. People vote on it, or whatever, and that person gets like a weird prize. But that's my rambling again, doesn't fix inactivity really, but it would kill off a lot of characters.
And yeah, I know in the end there'd be some pissed of people if inactives suddenly won a prize for being able to make a fancy death for their character when they should have ousted/played them in the first place.... Woot.

You know...if we need someone to adopt characters, I have this friend named Chad who might be willing to do it, contact him over AIM his screen name is Slakker91,

Doing another inactive list isn't persay a bad idea, but it's just a bit flawed. You're absolutely right, Bloody, last time the handlers were given the option of "post or you lose your character" a lot of them DID post. Once. It gave them the motivation to post something to keep their characters on the active list, but not enough motivation to actually participate with them, and the RPing came to a stalemate again.
There are a lot of people who are inactive over school and stuff (Guitarjack, Maka, Toukan) but they've all had the decency to not only post an away topic but try their best to ensure that their characters weren't holding up the progress of the RP. Of course in G.J.'s case that was an inevitable since there's only two people in the topic, but I digress.
But then there's a lot of other people, and I'm not naming names because I'm not trying to offend anyone or hurt their feelings or anything (though since they aren't posting they probably aren't reading this anyhow) who've just up and vanished and haulted all activity in that forum because everyone else is being forced to wait on them to progress their storyline any further. Those characters are the ones who need to be taken care of.
I think if we did another inactive list we'd have exactly the same problem as last time: people hauling themselves onto the site to post one time in order to keep their character around. In the same breath, I'd absolutely hate to see a slew of characters go inactive and suddenly die in the RP without any reason or explanation, and that tends to happen when we do inactive deaths... not because of anyone's writing ability or anything, but because, well, for example it wouldn't make a whole lot of sense for Dorien to suddenly blow his brains out after surviving nine days on an island.
That's why personally, I think adoption would be the best route. Even then, there's going to be problems... like how would someone qualify as being inactive? We can't necessarily go by their last post date in ALL of the topics... the warehouse topics are pretty spaced out date-wise, but that's because there's 8 handlers posting in the same forum... makes a difference. Because of situations like that, it makes it real difficult to say "Well, you haven't posted in 2 weeks so you're eliminated."

I'm still here, school and home life has been a bit of a drag though. I still manage to check everyday though.

OT to Mastermind: I love your avatar. XD
Minase - May 10, 2006 05:43 PM (GMT)
I think the danger zones shouldn't be randomly generated anymore, stick them where people aren't doing anything, it's motivation to get moving and if they don't...well it sorts the issue out anyway.
Slayer - May 10, 2006 06:01 PM (GMT)
Sounds good in theory, but it would take away some of SOTF's unpredicatbility and the inactive handlers would just post to move the characters and then go inactive again.
MismatchedEyes - May 10, 2006 06:40 PM (GMT)
Bleh Sorry Ive been lagging outside issues but dorian will be posted dead by the end of this night and Im watchin on MooCow and have been for weeks.
