FF4 was pretty unremarkable. Fun, but not great. FF5 had a thin plot, but the job system alone was great fun. I remembewr when I reached my first milestone of getting the main character to master all combat classes. Took a long time, but I loved it. FF6 was my favorite of the series. There were a ton of characters, but they were all different enough to enjoy. And screw Aeris; watching Cid die was just plain sad, though the events of how that came to happen in my case were quite humorous... And the Espers were really a nice touch. FF7 was perhaps the most overrated videogame in history, and I consider it to be the worst in the series. In addition to looking horrible, the characters had zero developement; few stat differences, no unique abilities...just walking sacks of materia. Good music, though. FF8 was another good one. While I didn't like the junctioning system, and I HATED the fact that you couldn't equip armor, the graphics were excellent, and I liked the card system a great deal. FF9 is my second favorite, simply because it has a more traditional feel than the last few predecessors. It also had a higher level of difficulty, something the other games sorely lacked. FF10 had some genuinly good ideas - sphere grid, custmizable weapons, etc. - but I never really got over the lack of a world map FF10-2 was a sin. Period.

I agree with you on a few points there Jabarto.
I haven't finished playing IV and haven't bothered with V because I dislike the job system. But VI was great, I didn't play it through until a few months ago though. :x
VII was annoying on a lot of levels. Most of which you mentioned, but I have complete issues with how all of the fanboys/girls think Sephiroth was such a bad arse.
He wasn't. It's just that Cloud, as a protagonist was just pathetic. The story was okay, though the ending was just stupid. And poor. It seemed like a total cop out on Square's part. Aeris was my favourite character from that game, but I'm not sure if that's says much of anything. :/
Yuffie just infuriated me so much that I wanted to kill her. Slowly, very slowly. Cait Sith was just ridiculous. Worst FF character, EVER. I hate Barrett and distinctly dislike Tifa. ...You might be asking why I played this game through. I'm not even sure now. And of course it has no replay value because who the hell wants to level up all of those materia again? Not I.
FFVIII was great. I loved the Junctioning system and didn't really give a toss about the ability to use armour. Though, as with VII, everyone ended up being a bit samey.
IX is probably my third favourite, being trumped by VI and VIII. I really enjoyed how all of the characters really did have different functions and abilities. The card game sucked though, because VIII's was just better. The only thing I really hated about IX was Chocobo Hot and Cold. But then, as a rule, pretty much all of the mini games on FF's annoy the hell out of me.
X was really good. I think in terms of story, it's my favourite. I also really enjoyed the battle system in that game and the way that you could properly control summons was really cool. It was quite long, especially when you do pretty much everything, but I really didn't mind. I didn't bother with the Blitzball thing, that goes back to my dislike of mini games.
X-2 was an abomination, a non-game in my mind. It was like this weird meeting of FF and J-pop. They changed Yuna's personality, she was quite fakely cheerful, it seemed. Rikku became [possibly more] annoying, Brother became the worst NPC of any game in existence. And the mission based set up was just stupid and not like FF. Anyone who thinks this game is any good is just silly. I think I just played this to 100% for the sake of.
XII was... well... disappointing. There was next to no character development. At the last boss, I was still scratching my head and asking myself "Why are Vaan and Penelo still there?" The story left much to be desired, and initially I found the battle system really cumbersome. Furthermore, the way enemies pursue you over the map was frustrating. I didn't complete this game to 100% because after I'd completed the story portion, I didn't see a point. Much disappointment.
I don't know whether to have high hopes for XIII or not, given Squeenix's efforts since the merge. >_>

Good God, yes. Sephiroth wasn't a horrible antagonist, but he wouldn't be nearly as popular if Cloud hadn't spent the entire game moping through an identity crisis. Remeber when he was in the wheelchair in Mideel? My brother and I always joked about him being "too depressed to walk."
You know, thinking about that made me realize something. I didn't like FF8 that much as far as mechanics were concerned - as I said, I missed equipment and didn't like the junctioning system - but I always found it appealing for some reason. I think I know what it is, now; it's the only game in the series that didn't have at least one really annoying character.
I mean, in FF4, it was those two kids who were twins (I forget their names.) In 6, it was Relm. In 7, it was Cait Sith. But 8 didn't really have anyone. Selfie or whatever her name was came close, but she was pretty tolerable. Then 9 had to have Eiko, and my respect for the series dropped a bit. Then Rikku came along and kinda demolished it.
Oh, and good call on FF9's card game. I hated it, too.

I've only played three FF games all the way through, and to be honest, I didn't really like them.
FF1-6: Can't say. I hear really good things about them, and would probably play them if I ever got the chance.
FFVII: One of the biggest flaming piles of overrated mediocrity in RPGs. Cloud was so one-dimensional it was painful, and Sephiroth just annoyed me. Come to think of it, the only character I liked in that game was Red XIII. Ironically, the animal was the only character in the game that seemed to have any depth at all.
The game play was boring. There really wasn't much separating it from any other RPG of its time. As a matter of fact, the only thing I can think of that made it any different from other RPGs was its graphics, which leads me to my next point...
WTF was up with the lego people? That was so ugly. The FMV graphics were nice, yes, but those take up less than 1% of the entire game. I would have sacrificed nice FMV graphics for better actual game play graphics (like the battle graphics). As a matter of fact, I think they would have been better off using 16-bit sprites over those boxy stubs with pointy hair.
It had an ok storyline, though. Not great, but not horrible either.
I'm kind of looking forward to playing Crisis Core on the PSP though. I think Zack would make a much, much better and more interesting protagonist than Cloud.
FFVIII: I played it at a friend's house for a little while and when she asked if I'd like to borrow it, I turned the offer down. I kind of regret that now.
FFIV: Same as FF8
FFX: I loved the storyline, but hated the game play. In my opinion, it was too linear and boring.
I wasn't particularly fond of the characters either . Tidus... he started out annoying and at the end of the game, he was still annoying. Yuna - didn't hate her, but thought she was too stereotypical. Rikku - Yuffie 2.0. Lu Lu - I don't really know what it was about her but I just didn't like her. Auron - I actually liked him. As for the rest of the characters, they just didn't stick out and weren't very memorable (and that includes Seymour. He was a better antagonist than Sephiroth, but in the end, forgettable).
I kind of liked the sphere grid and some other aspects of the game, but what really killed it for me were the battles and the linear game play.
FFX-2: I refuse to touch that abomination.
FFXI: Never played, and don't care to.
FFXII: Great game play, but where was the character development? :x
That game would have been amazing in my opinion if it had had, you know, a decent plot. The battles were too easy though. All you had to do was set your gambits up right and you wouldn't even have to push any buttons during an entire battle.
