Anyone remember this one? It was part of TSR's original percentile game lineup (Star Frontiers, Top Secret, Boot Hill, and Gangbusters). It had fun comic-book races (you'll see some of them in d20 Future, btw), and a really well-done 'stranded on an alien plant' series of modules called the Volturnus series.

Oddly enough, the game came with 2 books, a basic game, and an advanced game (the game was simple enough you never needed the basic book). Oh, and it came with counters, lots of counters. They did a neat wargame and starship combat game called Knight Hawks, and an atrocious rules update called Zebulon's Guide to Frontier Space.

Anyone have any fun SF stories to tell?

Oh I loved this one! Before Star Wars the RPG, there was Star Frontiers! I jumped on this one as soon as I learned of it.

It's been so long since I played it though, I don't quite remember the games we played. I do remember one of the guys I refereed, as I think that's what they called the GM in that game, anyway, he used a needler pistol and tore a Vrussk to shreds.

If Skaff reads this, Vrussk were essentially Verpine. It was Vrussk right? I'm pretty sure that was it. Then there was the blob creatures that could change shapes, the gliding Wookie looking guys, what were they called?

Wooo, that's a toughie. You might want to Google it, and see if there's any fan sites out there that have more info. I wish WoC/TSR had their classic rules sets availible as downloadable PDFs for the fans.

Vrusk were human-sized praying mantises with 8 legs and 2 arms. The blobs were Dralasites, and the gliding monkey-men were the Yazarians. They also had a bad-guy worm race called the Sathar.

I never remember the weapons doing that much damage though. You could have up to 100 hits (50 was average), and a lot of weapons did 1d10 to 3d10 per shot. Our group ended up lowering hits to 1/2 normal to make it more deadly. Still, it was my first taste of non-Star Wars Sci-Fi, and it was cool.

I found a boxed set at a nearby FLGS for like $10 a few years ago. I jumped on that one!

I haven't had the opportunity to use it though, and it's just sitting in a box in my closet now. sad.gif

You thinking you'd like to run a game here? I'd love to jump in on that!

I never played that one, but I did hear about it back in the day...

I did play Boot Hill though. Even ran some. Had a guy who was a crack shot with his six-shooters... He also carried a Remington Roomsweeper. That was a beaut!

Aww, I wanted to get Boot Hill so bad. I never could find it though. I ended up making my own, but I lost the rules after successfully playtesting it with my group. I miss that!

Yeah, it was really fun. That game is one of the reasons I liked the Dark Tower series of books...
