| Ok guys, the first ever poll on RPD. Now, I deliberately put only two answers on the poll, so no one can give me the, "I prefer a balance" easy out.
Balance is necessary, I'll agree, but personally, I like a great storyline where the players are the heroes like in the movies. There is a chance of death even for heroes, but it usually takes place at a dramatic point in the story, not randomly while just getting into the plot.
So please be honest with your answers, I really want to know!

| I concur. Storyline and roleplaying take over and fill in the gaps where dice can fail you. Sure, it works both ways, but it seems that more often than not, good roleplaying will help more than adherence to mechanics.
For instance: when Han Solo blew his Con roll on the Death Star, if the player controlling him had been able to word a much better response, that would likely have been rewarded in the form of an easier difficulty number. Now, he still might have blown the roll, and that's that. But better roleplaying is the key, and the way to get players to roleplay better is to have a better storyline, and greater emphasis on it than on the dice and rules themselves.

|The other thing you need is a good setting. No matter how good the roleplayers are, or how good the mechanics are, if the setting is crap, then no one is going to play to their full potenial.|

| I'd have to agree that story telling is more important to me then the actual "game". The story stays with you after the game is finished, it helps to grow your characters and should leave an everlasting feeling of satisfication.
The group that I have DnD with, decided to keep a record of our story. Its good for having yarns about later and helps to keep a certain level of consistency in the game. Online I have preferred to participate in story telling RP (chat and forum) rather than game orientated RP. Too many arguements begin when its game focused. and storytelling allows you be more expressive and when it works, its quite rewarding.

|Exactly! That's what I love the most about the PBP format. The records are there for everyone to view, so consistency is no issue.|

|Okay, this is what I think. Story and roleplaying first. Game mechanics second. IMO, if you have the RPing and story first, the game mechanics can contribute even more than it could by itself.|
