I loved this game! Though it took like what seemed forever to create a character, it was so awesome. I think another problem with it was that unless you were a 00 character, the game just didn't feel like James Bond.

I'm thinking of designing my own version that allows for at least one character being a 00, and the others can be his equivalents in other agencies. Like in the movies where he teams up with agents from Russia or China or Japan. Even though they were considered his lessers in the films, it doesn't have to be that way in the game!

Anybody got some ideas along these lines?

One thing I always loved about the 007 game is that they hit the 'feel' of it just right. The game just felt like reading a spy novel, especially in the techincal essays on the various cars, weapons, and gadgets in the game. The situation charts in the end of the book were limited in their possibilities, but gave you a good feel of how the world should 'act.'

I wasn't a big fan of the percentile Quality Results system, it was good for one agent, but when roomfuls of guards started shooting, it slowed down a little too much. This sort of tiered percentile chart system was used in games from Marvel Super Heroes (better used here) to TSR's Indiana Jones (horrible use of it).

I did like the levels of success though, although I would have gave them more descriptive names, instead of QR 1 to 4, maybe results like '007', 'Agent', 'Normal', and 'Rookie'. Therefore, if you're playing bacccarat in Monte Carlo and get a '007' result, you're playing like James Bond. If you got a 'Rookie' result, you're playing like Inspector Clouseau.

All in all, 007 is one of those games I miss.

Indeed. I'm in the long process of attempting to convert it over to another system. I'm going with Tri-Stat for now, but I was also thinking about Unisystem.

Any ideas?

Um...

How about SBRPG? At the risk of sounding shameless, I'd suggest to take a look at the game I helped write & contribute art to, SBRPG. Seriously, though there's no need to convert anything, and we have a race and class design system that lets you build any sort of character you want. Another fun thing we have is a Faction system in the game you could use to simulate evil organizations, what they are up to, and how they react to whatever the '00' agents do.

Ultimately, it really depends on what your idea of 007 is. I prefer the 'Spy Who Walked in From the Cold' type 007, with backstabbings, intrigue, and forays into Communist East Germany where the agents aren't asssigned guns every time (most fights are with pistols). Some people could see 007 and think 'summer action movie' with missile launching cars and being assigned twin submachineguns.

The only other systems that come to mind would be GURPS (it might not have the feel you want though), or the d6 System (if you like the 'fast and loose' style of 007). What game you pick will have a big impact on how it feels, which is key to running a fun '00' game.

That's not a bad idea. Heck, there's some instances where firearms simply won't do. That's when you need a bad son of a gun who can go in there with blades, improvised weapons, or bare-handed and STILL take 'em down.

Kinda like the Marine Death Squads in Viet Nam. All blades and bows- no noisemakers. Make the Pick-Up Zone or yer walkin' back. Now MOVE OUT!

Yeah, it'd be good to be a spy and have THAT skill set, let me tell ya!!

Exactly. Any fool can shoot a gun, but a really scary spy guy uses his mind (and body) as a weapon. I'd rather have that guy working for my super-secret spy agency than someone who can't go anywhere without dragging a case full of guns around.

My favorite spy-RPG situations go like this: spy is put somewhere risky, like a hostile country. Start by meeting some contacts, then the agency tells you to do something dangerous, like sneak into a guarded building. If the spy gets his hands on a gun from a guard, it has like 6 bullets in it - gotta use em well. The spy should mentally be able to toss the gun away to avoid being found with it by the bad guys. Play in the casino, avoid the assassins, romance the hottie, all while keeping your cover. Foil the evil plan, send the bad guys packing, and then leave the place on a coach plane ticket reading a newspaper without suspicion.

James Bond, not James Boom. laugh.gif
