Hi,

I'm the Konkret dice roller. Never mind this post cause its just a test topic.

Actually, this is not really the dice roller. :) It'd be nice if it was smart enough to write stuff by itself. I'm the creator of the http://rpg.norwinter.com/konkret and me and the forum creator have decided that it would be cool if Konkret could roll rolls straight onto the forum. Hence this little topic so I can try stuff out.

Posted by: Chabit Rane Mar 1 2006, 11:33 PM
I have only one word to say about that:

"Cool."

Posted by: jamfke Mar 1 2006, 11:43 PM
Welcome to the site! Hope we can get this thing working!

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 2 2006, 12:11 AM
Thank you!

Alright the good news is that after studying the way the forum works I think it is reasonable to expect that Konkret should be able to mimic an actual user, KonkretRoller, and post a reply, provided it knows where to post.

So in order to use the roller the user would have to provide a link to the 'reply' page for the particular post they want the result to appear underneath. I can see some user friendliness issues here cause it is hard to explain to a user how to copy a complicated looking URL.

But it's better than nothing I think. Issues still remain: forum security stuff might make it hard to automate posting, and I still need to figure out how to fake a login. But I bet I can outsmart the forum given some time. :)

Well my hobby work time is up for today, but I'll return in the next few days for more experiments.

Cool, thanks for stopping in and saying hi. If you need any help on my end, let me know.

Posted by: Tina_D Mar 2 2006, 09:56 AM
I'd be... backing up. lol

Posted by: jamfke Mar 2 2006, 04:26 PM
That's the coolest feature about this forum host, they back up all their servers at regular intervals. I don't have to worry about it!

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 2 2006, 10:09 PM
So while waiting for the forum version of Konkret, jamfke let me know that you guys need a WEG's Star Wars dice roller with the whole wild die thing. I spent some time working with Konkret today and added one. Maybe you guys will like it.

I never played Star War's and I never used any wild dice so I have no idea how its supposed to work. Check it out and make sure it makes sense. Here's the inofficial beta version of Konkret: http://rpg.norwinter.com/konkretBETA/.

I'll make it the official Konkret if it seems to work.

Posted by: jamfke Mar 2 2006, 11:32 PM
Sweet! One thing though, when the Wild Die comes up a 1, you subtract it and the highest die roll of the remaining dice. So a roll of 5, 5, 3, 1 would be a total of 8; (5 + 3 + -5 + -1=8)

Sorry, I must have forgotten to mention that!

Otherwise, it's great! The roll of sixes is perfect!

Is there a way to include the wild die, but prevent it from subtracting the 1 and highest die roll for the other options I mentioned? The Wild Die gives GMs three options. The first is like you already have it. The second option is to ignore the roll all together and just roll normally, and the third option is to total them all up and have a complication occur even if the roll is a success.

Of course, we could just use the World of Darkness set up you have and set it on 6 sided dice, but it would be nice to have a check box like the Drop Lowest Die and Calculate Sum options on what you've created to simply turn off the Wild Die operation or something.

Are you having any problems getting it to post or how we're going to control it in the posting environments? I'd like to help if I can.

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 3 2006, 12:02 AM
Hey,

So not only is the highest die ignored in the sum, but also the actual wild die?

This is what a roll might look like right now for me:

4xD6+0: (5) 1 4 1 (Sum: 6)

The last die is the wild die, and since it was a 1, Konkret dropped the highest die, which was a 5. It then added up 1+4+1 for a sum of 6. If I understand you right, what you want is that instead it should both drop the highest die and the wild die?

4xD6+0: (5) 1 4 (1) (Sum: 5)

Am I getting this right? smile.gif

For the second feature, I understand you want an option like "Don't Handle Wild Die of 1" (geez, that's a long name.) and in the above case we would instead have:

4xD6+0: 5 1 4 1 (Sum: 11)

and it would be up to the GM to note that the Wild Die (which is always the last die) was a 1 and that special considerations need to be made. Is that what you mean?

Is there also a third option to just not add the wild die if its a 1 but otherwise do nothing special?

4xD6+0: 5 1 4 (1) (Sum: 10)

I'll look at putting these things in, at the very least I'll fix the problem where the wild die isn't being dropped. And about the forum stuff, I didn't actually have time to look at it today. I wrote this wild die thing during lunch today as it was pretty straightforward. The forum stuff is much more complicated so it needs to wait until my day job is less stressful. smile.gif

Posted by: jamfke Mar 3 2006, 12:18 AM
Yes, you've got it! Drop the Wild Die and the highest die roll on a 1.

Yes, again, you've got it. Maybe you could just call it "Wild Die off/on" with a check box selector switch.

[quote]Is there also a third option to just not add the wild die if its a 1 but otherwise do nothing special?

4xD6+0: 5 1 4 (1) (Sum: 10)
[/qote]

No, the second and third options are essentially the same thing, just a total of the roll and either use it as is or have complications with a success.

Like 4xD6+0: 5 1 4 (1) (Sum: 11)

Then the GM could decide either to just allow the roll to be normal, or have complications such as, "The blaster shot hits the stromtrooper square in the chest, knocking him down but not out. (Complication)The power pack in the pistol suddenly grows warm and a warning indicator flashes a message that the cell is overloading."

You don't have to do anything special, except maybe leave the Wild Die like you have it in parentheses () but not added or subtracted to or from the total.

Keep up the good work!!!

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 3 2006, 12:51 AM
Sounds like a serious complication that all with the blaster pistol!

Alright, so now Konkret Beta drops the Wild Die too if its a 1.

'Wild Die Off' doesn't seem to convey the right message though. I thought that while a wild die value of 1 would be ignored (i.e. not cause values to be droppe), a wild die value of 6 would still be rerolled?

I think I won't have time to do any more stuff tonight but at least something got done. :)

QUOTE

No, just added up with the rest of the dice. Basically a normal roll of the dice.

Like I said, keep up the good work! glassesf.gif

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 3 2006, 03:38 PM
Okay, a new http://rpg.norwinter.com/konkretBETA is up now. It does the additional stuff requested: drops the wild die if its a one, or optionally allows you to ignore the wild die altogether in which case it does exactly the same thing as 'System: None', except that it colors the last die pink/purple. smile.gif

I'm going to promote this version to be the official version soon cause I think it works. So you guys mightn't have automatic forum posting yet but at least you have Star Wars rolling!

Posted by: jamfke Mar 3 2006, 09:28 PM
Excellent! Great work! Can't wait to see if we can get this working on the forums! Have you considered making this into a downloadable file? If so, I would love to place a link for it on the Downloads Page of Roleplayers Direct. If not, I'll still add a link to it in this thread. Do you have a logo or banner ad for it yet?

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 4 2006, 02:27 PM
Okay I have updated the official http://rpg.norwinter.com/konkret to incorporate the WEG Star Wars roller and some other minor changes I made (the layout is a bit more tight now and should work a bit better in Internet Explorer).

Konkret is exclusively an online utility cause of the way it works and the way it will work when supporting forum posts. Don't worry, it has plenty of bandwidth. smile.gif

I'll make a logo for Konkret soon so you can post a nice looking link.

Posted by: Jedi Skyler Mar 4 2006, 02:36 PM
Hey, thanks for all the hard work! This is shaping up really nicely; it'll be nice to be able to roll my own dice again. smiley_karate.gif

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 4 2006, 06:13 PM
Here are some banners for Konkret:

Put them wherever you think people will find them useful. smile.gif

Posted by: jamfke Mar 4 2006, 08:17 PM
Excellent! One more thing. Could you make the sum total a bit more visible? Maybe bold text or have a separate text box for it to show in?

I used the quarter sized image to post it at the top of the page. I think It'll work great there!

http://rpg.norwinter.com/konkretBETA

It was a lot more time consuming to write than I had hoped but oh well. Here it is. smile.gif It probably has a few bugs so please post here if you find any. I'll promote it to be the official version after I make the posted message a bit nicer, and add some security stuff.

Posted by: jamfke Mar 7 2006, 04:38 PM
So far, one problem is that the link takes me to a blank page. I'm getting nuthin! blink.gif

Ok, I was going to ask how many characters I could input in that field, but now I see. It'd be neat if there was a text box where they could include their post for the thread too. That way it wouldn't be just the die roll. But if that would make it too cumbersome, don't bother. I know you're a busy person, but it would make this the ultimate!

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 7 2006, 05:47 PM
Thank you! I'm glad that you like it. Its one of my many hobby projects. I like creating stuff. smile.gif

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 7 2006, 05:51 PM
Well here's the limit: 45 characters for the label and the whole post cannot be more than 2000 characters. These are kinda security features though. I don't want less mature people to go and post huge posts just to disturb the forum, you know?

People can still post right after Konkret or right before Konkret I hope.

I'm probably going to make it official tomorrow. I can't spend too much time fiddling around with it because of work and all. But if nobody finds any problems, probably tomorrow.

  • 'Remember this roll as' is now called 'Label this roll'
  • The normal 'Roll' button is disabled if 'Forum Post' has been selected
  • The 'reply' link now contains instructions instead of a fake link
  • The 'reply' link field automatically clears when clicked on so the user can just paste into it

We just found a little problem. When you add a modifier to the die rolls, it adds it to each die rolled instead of the total sum of the roll. So if we roll 2D6+2 and actually get two 6s, they both come up as 8s for a total sum of 16, when we should get two 6s for a total of 12 + 2 for a total sum of 14.

Not a major problem, but we were getting some seriously high rolls there when we shouldn't have.

Okay the official version of Konkret has been updated to solve that thing you guys had with the modifier being added to each die instead of to the sum. Turns out that was actually the way I intended it but now you can do either by selecting 'add to sum' or 'add to each die', next to the modifier.

I also made the roll posts prettier and added a counter. I think the counter will be helpful when referring to rolls. Like, "Okay in roll #54, I got this result..." etc. And yeah, there was a big jump in roll count between some of my tests cause I have two different counters, one for my test machine and one for the official version. smile.gif

Oh and the banner logo has been updated to make the edges look nicer. The new link is 'rpg.norwinter.com/konkret/images/konkretQB.png' but the old link actually points to it too.

I've got a question. On the WEG system, if the wild die comes up a 6 does the roller automatically roll the wild die again?

Posted by: netjedi Mar 9 2006, 11:48 PM
Yes. and the wild die will show up as a different color than the rest. smile.gif

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 10 2006, 01:20 AM
Yep, just like netjedi says. Here're some more details:
  • If the wild die is rerolled, the rerolled dice are also purple
  • The description stays true to what was originally rolled: ie it'll still say 5xD6 even if the wild die was rerolled 10 times. It won't say 15xD6.
  • If the wild die is a 1, its dropped and so is the highest other die
  • If dice are dropped they go in paranthesis
  • You can turn off special handling of the wild die by clicking 'ignore wild die'. This might be good if the storyteller/game master wants to handle it himself or herself.

Okay guys. Seems like everybody is happy with the forum roller functionality. smile.gif

Because of work I won't be able to check these forums so often, so if there ever is any trouble, just post in Konkret's own forum: http://www.norwinter.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewforum.php?4. Or send me an email.

Thanks! Like I said, I'll be doing some advertising about having the roller on the site. And thanks again!

Can you rig the roller for the White Wolf system? I need to be able to set it so it re-rolls 10's, and in rare cases 9's and 8's. It's wholely D10s and they don't add together. They are seperate rolls.

It would be greatly appreciated smile.gif

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 17 2006, 12:38 PM
Some dice should reroll in White Wolf? I never saw anything like that! :) Is this some specific feature for your particular game? I'm a little bit concerned about putting in non standard things because the roller will become more confusing for average users. When they hit 'white wolf roll' they want to get their botches and successes like they expect, you know.

Sorry for not noticing your post earlier but like I mentioned, I have a lot of work right now. Please use the http://www.norwinter.com/e107_plugins/forum/forum_viewforum.php?4 if you want me to notice things earlier. :)

Posted by: Orgaloth Mar 17 2006, 10:06 PM
No problems. Yeah there are times when the dice are re-rolled. Primarially it's the called 10 again rule, and when you roll a 10 you get to reroll that die. 9 Again also exists and more rarely 8 again. I guess it's just easier in a Table Top setting to pick up on this, then anywhere else. There's no major problem. Just thought I'd ask.

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 18 2006, 02:05 AM
Hmm okay that's interesting. I've never seen anything like that in Vampire at least. Under what circumstances do these rerolls come about? If its a common thing, I'll see what I can do when/if I get more free time in the future again. :)

Posted by: Orgaloth Mar 18 2006, 05:38 AM
Actually the 10 Again rule has been a staple of the White Wolf system since they first published. They carried it over to the revamped system.

On page 125 of the blue core rule book it mentions 10 Again. This happens anytime you roll a 10. It's a little like the wild die, where if you continute rolling 10s you get to keep rolling it, but it's for any and all 10s you rolled. 9 Again is less common, but some powers and circumstances grant it. The 8 Again will hardly come up.

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 18 2006, 08:24 PM
Wow. I completely missed that rule when I was playing somehow.

Okay so lets get this thing fixed up then. Here're some pretend rolls and how I understand they should turn out, from your explanation:

Initial Roll vs target 8 is,
10 4 5 9 (2 successes)

After reroll, 10 4 5 9 10 (3 successes)
After reroll again, 10 4 5 9 10 4 (3 successes)

And we stop there.

How about,

10 4 5 9 (2 successes)
10 4 5 9 1 (1 successes)

?

By the way, I haven't been keeping up with WoD very much but I understand that they changed the dice system in the new edition? I heard that you now roll against a fixed target of 8 and that 1's don't count against your successes. I was hoping maybe you're more familiar with this so I can put that into Konkret too.

Yeah I know, it's embarrassing how little I know about roleplaying dice given that I'm writing an online roller. But there's a lot of systems out there and I come from a tradition where roleplaying is pretty freeform. smile.gif Dice still comes into play but I haven't had a chance to learn that many systems.

You're right in that the target number is 8 and 1's don't subtract. In the example

Initial Roll vs target 8 is,
10 4 5 9 (2 successes)

Only one die would be re-rolled (the 10) So if that came up 8 or more, then there's another success. If it came up 10 again, then it's a success, and it's re-rolled. As long as it comes up 10 it's re-rolled.

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 20 2006, 12:46 PM
So does the 10 Again, 9 Again rules etc apply only to the new revision with fixed target 8 and no 1s subtract?

Posted by: Orgaloth Mar 20 2006, 04:13 PM
The 10again also applies to the old system, but the 1 took away successes, and the target number was determined by the GM.

So the above statement about the new system is true.

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 20 2006, 06:27 PM
Alright. I think I have a pretty good idea about what should be done with the WoD system then.

I'll try to get this done pretty soon and upload a beta so you can try it out.

I'll implement:
  • Separation between new WoD and old WoD: new WoD has fixed target 8 and no subtraction for 1s.
  • 10 Again, 9 Again and 8 Again for new WoD: 8 Again implies 9 Again and 10 Again, 9 Again alone implies 9 Again and 10 Again, 10 Again alone is only 10 Again.
  • When X again is active, and X is rolled, one more die is added to the pool which then is treated the same as if it had been part of the original die pool.

Posted by: Orgaloth Mar 20 2006, 06:42 PM
Sounds right, but I'm not sure what you mean in the last point.

Posted by: KonkretRoller Mar 20 2006, 07:53 PM
I mean this: when rolling anything with '<something> Again' activated, then rolling <something> causes an increase in the dice pool for that roll. I.e. if rolling 10 Again, rolling a 10 will give you one more die in your pool for that roll. The new die is treated exactly as all the previous ones - in particular, if its a 10 again another die is added to the pool. Whatever system is used for counting successes, be it the new or the old one, will also apply to dice added in this manner.

Ahh I see now. Yeah that's right.
