Hey everyone, this is a topic about an upcoming game project, The Cursed Balance of the End War Saga series. Iíve always wanted to make my own games, and got together with others that shared those interests using one of the most known development tools of the indie game-making community, RPG Maker XP (RMXP). Overall it is an easy-to-use development tool that allows for SNES - GBA quality or better 2D graphics, and with the scripting language of Ruby, it also allows for customization with gameplay elements. ShadowFire Games is a small group willing to take their time and use the best of their skills to make great games using this program, maybe even moving to higher and more advanced programs afterwards. Our first project, still in the preplanning stages, is The Cursed Balance:

Backstory

Overview
The world of Cronne isnít much of a simple one. Everything that belongs to us, the inhabitants of Cronne have as well. Technology, economy, environment and free thought are just a few. So itís impossible that the people of the world wouldnít advance, and conflicts wouldnít arise. Having been shaped by their surroundings and the very place they were set in, the standard people of Crees, have gotten quite far with achievements, but their inability to understand the deeper elements of life may cause quite a scar in the world of Cronne. This is the first part of the End War Saga trilogy, and the story of Cronne...

Some Races/Nationalities
Crees: Generally the Crees are the humans of The Cursed Balance. Named by a tribe that they once came across, their names mean ĎThe Creatorsí because of their ability to change fate and their surroundings, and although unknown to them, their carelessness in doing so. Just like us, the Crees are shaped by the setting they live in, and because of that they have become different from us in all kinds of ways, especially culturally. They have stereotypes and flaws as well, and can easily be manipulated by greed and false promises. They are far from a perfect race, but when united under a certain cause, they are a very powerful force.
Trancers: These kinds of people live among the Crees, as they are they only with advanced abilities. Trancers have stronger minds and more potential in realizing things, and can deceive their minds and their surroundings to turn thought into reality. They do have their limits and arenít gods, so while they can cause a whole lot of destruction for any reason, Trancers can be killed like any other group of people. Their history isnít too great though, because the Crees can be so prejudice and headstrong, many people united to try and exterminate the Trancers out of fear and jealousy, thinking that they could not be trusted with their powers. Although close to completing their goal after long and extremely difficult wars, the holocaust was ended. Those that accept Trancers for whom they are can benefit greatly from their achievements and ideas, yet there are still many who hide from revealing themselves. The state of mind is called Trance, and the drawing of mind is called Trancing.
The Trance Tribes: Encountered by Crees, the Trance Tribes are less advanced technologically than Crees, but in other things are much more understanding and knowing. Many are unchanged by the influence of Crees, and there are/were three main tribes (the largest and strongest ones).
The Spirit Tribe: A few hundred years ago, the island of Avale was home to a Trance Tribe known as the Spirit Tribe. Also known by few as the ones that possess true Trance knowledge and abilities, they can do more with their powers since they know more about the state of mind. They belong to the island of Avale, which the tribe says is the ĎPlace of First Existenceí, and performed many traditional practices. They were influenced by Crees though, and eventually became an independent nation, growing more modern (in their standards) by trades. Now the tribe and the practices are forgotten by all but a handful that keep the knowledge to themselves. The new Avalians are either the Tropics people that are poor and superstitious but enjoy life and have fun, or the more uptight and richer New Avale people.
The Focus Tribe: Located on the inland of the main continent of the Western Lands, The Focus Tribe still exists. They contain less knowledge then when before the Crees came and populated their lands, but still contain the secrets of getting the most efficiency and power out of the Trance state.
The Myth Tribe: The few people that read Lethís Journey of Travels just dismissed the idea of a tribe of this power being located in the Southern Corner. Leth wrote that they possessed something other than Trance, something different. Another location that Leth said theyíd be is near the eastern-mid part of the Eastern Lands. The area is now just a barren land with ruins that show that someone was there at a point in time.

Some Lands
Western Lands: Two or three huge continents that take up the Ďwesterní (It is a globe so there is no real western) side of Cronne. This is the largest land mass in the world, and is less natural with more cities and many man-made locations.
Eastern Lands: One huge continent that is much more tall than wide that takes up the Ďeasterní side of Cronne. Around 3/5 the size of the Western Lands (Still not close too small at all), it does have quite a few large modern cities, and is said to be where the Crees first existed. The advancing of the Crees was mainly on the Western Lands after travel by sea. Because of this, the Eastern Lands is much more natural and gets most of its modern resources by trade. Itís home to many landmarks and also has quite a few dangerous places and creatures.
Inner Continent: A large round island in between the Mainlands (Western and Eastern Lands), it around 1/3 the size of the Eastern Lands. One of the cities located there is known as the center point of technological advancement, and is quite large. It is in a tropical zone so it also has all kinds of unique natural things that are located in the many springs and jungles.
The Islands: A large group of Islands slightly northwest of the Western Lands. Avale is the largest island there, but a few small islands surround it, with only a minority that are populated.
Southern Corner: A region that is in the Ďsouth west cornerí of Cronne. It has huge and unpredictable weather changes that can change it from being an extremely hot and sunny region to a snowy and icy region within a few weeks. It is unknown what exists there since it hasnít been explored much yet. Lethís many famous travels include that he was the first to visit there.

Some Important Places
Lethens: The largest city of the Western Continent, and probably the second strongest and most advanced. It is run by a leader but there are still many personal rights. Itís a happy place with a unique market and many ceremonies.
Avale: A beautiful, large island slightly to the north east of Lethens. It attracts tourists from all over and besides that also has a good market by trading natural resources. There are two parts of the island. The west side or the Tropics Avale is about 3/5 of the total island. The north third of the Tropics is known as The Wildlands, and is quite dangerous and also contains ruins of a past civilization. The mid and bottom thirds of the Tropics are home to the Tropic Avalians that live in wood or sometimes stone houses. Along the whole west coast is a very well known beach with nice sparkling water and smooth white sand. The north part of the beach isnít used because it is rocky and for some reason it is usually stormy up there which causes huge waves. The east side or the New Avale is more modern and gets more resources from trade. It was just recently made but already the whole part of the island is nearly populated. Tropics Avale goes inland until it is stopped by a very large and steep cliff. This cliff can be climbed by the High Path, a large path that goes along the side of the cliff to reach the top, New Avale.
Zale: The main city of the Inner Continent, and the most advanced with technology. Nature and technology mix to make a very strange and unique city.
Frent: The largest city of the Eastern Continent, quite advanced and very strong. In some ways itís old-styled, and in others itís modern-styled.

Some Important People
Leth: A famous adventurer from the Eastern Lands. He became famous by his very daring travels and fighting skills. Soon he settled in the top part of the Western Lands, getting some people with him, it became a small village. While it grew in population, obtained new technology, and even had many achievements, he unexpectedly disappeared leaving no trace. A few hundred years later the village simply known as Lethensville is now a huge castle city known as Lethens.
King Odomun: The leader of The Spirit Tribe when Leth visited Avale. The king aged very slowly and was one of the most intelligent people of any race. Finally he died after the golden age of Avale, and chose a young man known as Volen as his successor.

Some Important Events and Objects
Avalian Pride and the Spirit Staff: The Avalian Pride is a tournament of all types that was created by Volen to find a successor that is worthy. The winner is then given the hardest test of all in The Wildlands. When he comes back, he is then handed the Spirit Staff. An object that has been passed down by all the leaders, it is said to give the wielder a deeper feeling of power. It is a Ďgoldení decorated staff that holds a deep blue orb at the top.
Crowning of Fate and Lethís Crown: The Crowning of Fate was made by Leth before he left Lethensville. When the current leader of the village (Now city) is getting old, he must assemble a group of 13 year olds. Giving them a test where they must travel to different places and overcome the challenges, the best adventurer will be taken in by the leader. When the leader passes away, the training given to the child will give him (Or her, this is not a gender specific position) enough strength and knowledge to take the royal place. When he takes the throne, he is handed a Ďsilverí crown decorated with jewels.
Lethís Book of Travels: A journal that Leth wrote in through his travels. After a past leader of Lethens was found murdered with the book in his hand, it was put away.

Immediate Conflicts

Act 1
With the near death of Volen, the first real competition is going to be held. Each part of Avale chooses a leader, New Avale goes with a man called De-Mos, who is the son of a rich and important figure, Tropic Avale goes with a nice and friendly man called Jay. The people of the Tropics think that De-Mos, like his dad, will be a greedy person and play dirty, and they may be forgotten. Meanwhile the New Avalians donít want Jay as a leader because they think he is too young, poor, and might not pay enough attention to them. With the nearing of the tournament, Jay disappears. The Tropic Avalians argue that De-Mos probably threatened him to leave the island, and that instead De-Mos should be exiled for it. With no real proof, Volen had to let De-Mos take his place. Shortly, Volen died and De-Mos took his place. All of their worries about the new leader were right, De-Mos was greedy and a corrupted person. Often destroying potential friendships, ignoring the Tropics, and making a strict law, and the soldiers havenít opposed him for reasons unknown to the islanders. And even with all this, De-Mos also sends soldiers on trips to the Wildlands. Now the villagers (New Avale is more of a town, Tropic Avale is more of a village) have taken the matter into their hands. Many of them have formed rebel groups, some just warriors that are experienced by their life of hard work, others that fight like legends. You take your place as the leader in one of these groups known as The Rouges.

Characters
Name: Zephyr (Island-type name with a deeper meaning, Nick names include Zeph or Zephy)
Age (As of Act 1): 21
Gender: Male
Race/Nationality: Avalian
Appearance (As of Act 1): Around 5'11 tall, muscular build but small body. Eyes are a deep blue, the hair is shaggy and a mix of brown and blond, slight facial hair as well. He is tan-skinned.
Personality (As of Act 1): Zephyr is hyper, careless, and playful even at times of battle with guards. He is very agile and has a short attention span. Because of this his rebel group is a lot of fun for him, and other than that he helps villagers, or spends time with his friends or the girls of the village (Heís a flirt).
Most Like (As of Act 1): I think that most people will find him a lot like a mix of Zidane (FF9) and Serge (Chrono Cross) because of his carefree style and battle skills.
Background: Zephyr was born during the windy season of Avale, where the gentle breezes are known as the Western Winds. When he was young he had to do chores and tasks for most of the day, playing sports with friends during his free time. Finally reaching 17 years of age, his father introduced Zephyr to the rebel group that he was the leader of. He grew quite popular with the villagers since his father was close to a legend, even though Zephyr only got simple tasks. When De-Mos started the counter-attacks, his parents left the village. After refusing to go with them, his father understood that he might as well give De-Mos the protection of the remaining rebels in his group. Zephyr worked up in rank until he became the new leader of the clan.
Point Gotten In Game: From the very start.
Role/Importance: Main character, Zephyr is not only a great fighter but he is the one that really advances the story.

Fighting Style: Quick and agile, Zephyr moves around a lot to not get hit, and is known for his moves.
Fighting Weapons: Zephyr is mainly seen using attachable claws or double daggers.
Defensive Gear: Light armor that doesnít stop movement.
Battle Skills: ???
Enemy Advantages: Slow enemies that leave areas open.
Enemy Disadvantages: Heavily armored enemies with very fast reflexes.

Characters Cont.

Name: Xol (Islander name, AKA The Guardian)
Age: 45
Gender: Male
Race/Nationality: Avalian?
Appearance: Looks like a man in his mid 30s age-wise, heís quite huge at 6'9" and is very muscular and tough. He is bald, dark skinned and he has dark brown eyes.
Personality: Xol is very serious just about all the time and always keeps a promise. Because of that he is a very good guard but isnít the most fun guy around.
Most Like: Due to him being a guy that always seems to know a lot more than he tells you, Iíd say heís like Vincent (FF7), not too mention his mysterious and protective nature adds to that comparison.
Background: Xol has grown up as an orphan and has realized that answers about his life will not be found out peacefully. Almost like a beast when battling, Xol towers over opponents and scatters them aside in seconds with his huge axe. Being a close friend of Gael (AKA The Village Spirit), when he left, he asked Xol to personally watch over his son. Now Xol makes sure that Zephyr will not be injured leading The Rogues.
Point Gotten In Game: First mission
Battle Role: Very tough and enduring fighter.

Fighting Style: Uses a huge poleaxe that is slow to get up, but with the momentum of the swing and the strength of Xol, it comes down very swiftly and knocks aside enemies dealing devastating damage.
Fighting Weapons: Xolís Poleaxe
Defensive Gear: Battle armor that is dark grey with shining light blue lines that make a design. Also a helmet that covers up his head and makes his face unseeable.
Battle Skills: ???
Enemy Advantages: Anything smaller than him.
Enemy Disadvantages: Very fast opponents that can get to his weak spot and run before getting attacked, or larger opponents that attack with crushing blows.

Name: Azetos (Islander name, AKA Shadow Master)
Age: 42
Gender: Female
Race/Nationality: Avalian
Appearance: Looks very young, like in the late 20s or early 30s. She is small, stealthy, and very agile, and is around 6'1" tall. She has light brown eyes, long black shiny hair, and is tan-skinned.
Personality: She is also serious when it comes to certain things, but at other times she can be very fun, flirtatious, and sly. It all depends on the mood of the events going on, and she is a very deadly but independent fighter.
Most Like: ???
Background: Azetos is said to have come from one of the other islands, but that hasnít been confirmed because she never talks about her history. She did appear on Avale at the age of 15 and had to make a living by working at a weapons store. When De-Mos took over and the islandís condition slowly worsened, she started working as a mercenary until meeting Gael and joining up with him. She has worked on solo missions, mainly assassinations and thieving, but she also keeps an eye on Zephyr because of her gratitude to Gael.
Point Gotten In Game: Second mission
Battle Role: Strong and deadly but hard-to-use fighter.

Fighting Style: Very stealthy and attacks without being seen. She is extremely cautious and tries to end her enemiesí lives with a single attack.
Fighting Weapons: Ninja-like sword, Shuriken-like throwing weapons.
Defensive Gear: Tight covering suit that is very easy to move in, sometimes a simple cloak.
Battle Skills: ???
Enemy Advantages: Open enemies.

Background: The fun of the four Rogue legends, Greak is known for his many wild antics in battle. He grew up around Xol and no one really knows his history, because of this he is very confused and not too trusting of others. His mysterious ability to control the winds had given him a spot in The Rogues at a very young age, and he just got stronger with time.
Point Gotten In Game: Second mission
Battle Role: A clever fighter that can be very strong if you learn how to use his true power.

Fighting Style: Crazy and careless, he rushes into the midst of combat and just attacks all around him.
Fighting Weapons: Staves and Rods.
Defensive Gear: Very little, light material made out of tropical plants.
Battle Skills: ???

Well first of all I hate the cliche age of all 18 year olds. Second of all, these are your father's friends, they all grew up and fought with him. Before leaving he asked them, his best friends from the rebel group (not the only members though) to watch over you. With Act 1, you get to use them along with your character.

Also, some more game information:

A slight spoiler (I hate saying that because then you know it's going to be included in the game); Trancers that try and obtain too much power or access the state of mind too much get absorbed in it. This slowly takes them apart and covers their emotions, and thought with power. The very thing that they use Trance for, they start to become.

A while, quite a long one, maybe after I finish the intro I'll show it off, then a playable demo of Act 1.

Story

Avalian Chapter Overview
Avalian Chapter, or act one isnít so much of an introduction or tutorial to new players. Instead it is a point that the rest of the game works off of, not playing a huge role in the storyline or giving a completely irrelevant opening, but a beginning that has a deeper meaning and lets players get familiar while actually playing a real part of the game. While being useless in the following chapters/acts it does come back with a strong presence later on.

AC starts off in a tropical environment that contains many nice and appealing traits while still remaining realistic. The villagers are nice and welcoming while not being too careless and allowing. Some of the elders still believe in the old legends and tales and often tell these to the young children. Meanwhile the adults practice fighting for protection or have physical work for long and hard hours to get money when the trade ships from Lethens come. The teenagers either accompany the adults or help run the markets with the older men or the women of town. Recently with De-Mos taking over the leadership of Avale, the villagers have been tense and not trusting. This has become anger with some of the greedy and aggressive choices he has made. To get back at him for putting them in a bad situation, the villagers raid the town for supplies or cause riots. The townspeople on the other hand are very spoiled, weak and greedy. Meanwhile the soldiers are loyal to the Tropics that many came from, but there is something that they fear which keeps them working for De-Mos. Lately the riots have become more violent and multiple guilds of villagers are making more harmful actions, working their way to the castle itself. Leth has also started making counter-attacks using the soldiers and there have been many fights in the town. This setting, combined with your characters, will not come out to having the boring, standard quests.

The AC will actually be full of large battles and wonít hold back on having interesting characters and enemies as well as some of the more ďmatureĒ elements. And while generally first parts to games donít have much secrets, items, or detailed locations, AC wonít really go with that.

The Whole Adventure
Nothing short of diverse. Every act of the game will introduce a new and unique setting, but it will still keep the core story elements in mind. Everything will fall in place in the end. As for the game direction, The Cursed Balance, moves away from being an epic war story, a relationship plot, and the cliche mood plots (Either tries to be dark and depressing without reason [People at least try and set the mood for the game!] or is just completely happy and unrealistic). Itís a unique experience, nothing less, that ends with a neutral conclusion that will keep you wondering. This game has all types of story moods. The character interaction, the world exploration, and the conflicts are all going to make an appealing game that will be hard to stop playing until the very end.

Story Elements

*Exciting but in a calm and passive way. We want to make the player explore all the settings and want to find all the secrets, but at the same time not be a bore.
*Enjoyable humor. Not stupid jokes or sophisticated humor, but just clever and funny. That doesnít mean itís going to be a comedy game, but humor is one of the many parts of a world and interaction.
*Sexual content is also one of the many parts of a world and interaction, and will be part of the game. Not in the form of pornographic material (Donít get your hopes up tongue.gif ) but... You all get what I mean anyways!
*Gore... Probably lots of it. Although I have really made it seem like this game is mainly story-based, there is a reason why people say that story is half the game. The other half includes some fun gameplay. And with that gameplay comes lots of fighting. All Iím going to say is that Iím not holding back with the violence but I'm not going to overdo it either.

Story Cont.

Locations
Each location has a different theme and that theme is what the other elements works off of. Like for a large industrial city, there will be a market section where people will generally be nice and trying to make a living, then there will be the slums where people are generally unhappy and the buildings are small and cramped together, then there will be the richer industry with the large and few houses. Every location is all influenced by its theme.

Characters
This is a game where teamwork is needed to survive. You canít beat the game with a single character at all, and wouldnít even want too, because every character brings something new to combat and interaction. The characters will range from being obsessed with beauty, being dark and mysterious, overly optimistic, or just strange... But will all bring some fun parts to the game.

Setting
With all this history and interaction, the game will still be simple and entertaining. The setting is completely fantasy and will remind people of games like Chrono Cross and Final Fantasy IX. The basic feel will be easy to use, but with a lot more to it than most other games have.

Secrets
Due this being a story based game and characters playing a huge role, only a few optional characters will be included. But weapons and other things will definitely be hidden throughout the game and they wonít be the weaker ones either...

Gameplay & Other:

Fighting & Ability System
A mix of previous games with new elements that make an original system. The fighting system will be similar to Tales of Symphonia in the fact that it is a side-view battle system. You also gain control of one character and full control of him, which means avoiding attacks and making combos is all up to you (Iím thinking that the control scheme in combat would be: A= Long attack, backwards swing with a lot of momentum and power but slow. S= Special attack. D= Thrust or pierce attack, very fast. W= Faster version of A, maybe even a jump attack if used in combo. X= A low attack). Weapons change the style completely in all aspects of combos, speed, and strengths. The ability system Iím thinking of making like Final Fantasy 9 where weapons have certain learn-able abilities. Unlike FF9 these abilities are obtained by more than using the weapon, and there are certain requirements that unlock these techniques.

Graphics & Art Direction
The graphics are going to be much different than RMXP. They are going to be much less anime-based and more ďrealisticĒ. The shading and coloring style all depends on locations...

Sound
Canít really answer on this right now...

Game Audience
The game audience is probably Teen-Mature. Iím not designing it for a certain group, because Iím just doing what I think is right, but in the end, I think it will end up being more suitable for teens or young adults.

Game Release
It all depends when we get the other team members... If we get them within a month and everyone is devoted, then this game should be done before 2007 despite its huge size.

Group Plans
End War Saga is a huge series and thereís a lot going for it... Letís just that the Cronne Chapter has a lot going for it too, and is being worked on more than you all think wink.gif .

**I decided to reveal three important people of the story:
1. (The) Shadow: A Trancer born during the holocausts, Shadow (Real name is unknown) had to resort to hiding and sneaking around to survive. When a group of Crees Slayers arrived in his town (Warriors that specialize with killing Trancers) something happened involving him. Now where the town used to exist is a new place, one that twists reality into a different form. (Sorry for the bad writing here, I had to resort to it to not give away any spoilers)

2. (The?) Chaos: An alcoholic Crees Slayer that was given Trance powers against his will driving him insane. Journeying around the world with his twin axes, the ageless Chaos causes confusion and hostility where ever he goes. His presence somehow makes enemies of even the best of friends.

3. ???: A man seen by the most powerful Trancers. Concealed in armor and sitting on a throne, all but few that see him go insane saying that they 'are close to the source', often causing devastating damage before being killed. Others become really depressed and refuse to use Trance at all.

***Everyone post your opinion please! Actually I want to try something new. If you have something good to say then go ahead, but I want to hear some negative responses on my game to improve on what I have.

---Here is some new info (well new to this forum). I'm going on vacation tomorrow so leave any opinions while I'm gone.

Woah, you've spent quite a bit of time on this. The backstory an such is very detailed and sounds good. I'm sure that your game will become a success. laugh.gif
