I realised the other day that I know what most of us do atm, but not in terms of any specifics. So, people at uni, what course are you doing? And those still in school, whats your favourite/strongest subject. And what do you see yourself/want to be doing when (if?) you go to uni?
Personally, I'm studying Engineering. Despite being on a writing site, I'm not huge on English (though I was originally considering architecture, and so Art covered my artsy side.) But yeah, I'm enjoying it. Gotta love all that maths. -------------------- |

Games and Interactivity. I plan to make the next generation of games. It's pretty fun, but the workload is slaughtersome. That's why I tend to drop out of rpgs at certain times, coz I have five assignments, all due in the same week. And most of which require three weeks of preparation. At least.

Still in school. Yeah, that's right, whil;e you guys are all out there with huge assignments and earning you're own income I'm cruising down easy street and still getting pocket money
basic subjects aside, I'm studying Drama, ICT, History and French. Doing pretty well in all subjects except French, which I'll probably end up failing. I'll probably be taking A-levels, not sure about what I'd be studying. Either: Philosophy, Psychology, History, English lit&lang combined (Counts as 1) Or: Philosophy, Physics, Maths, English lit+lang, History. need to make my mind up fairly quickly, as it were. -------------------- "Someday, someone will best me. Oh hey Wiz, a bit of a late question, but how did exams end up going? (I'm in the midst of mine right now
English was actually my worst subject in school by far. It ended up bringing my marks drastically down since it was a core component in our marks (there was a 7/50 point deficit between Eng and my second worst subject, Bio). Even though I wasn't a fan of it, I did best in Maths and Chemistry. Other subjects I did were Revolutions, University Australian History, Chinese. I'd say I really enjoyed History and English; didn't quite enjoy the Science stuff as much and detested Maths. Ironically, I'm studying Medicine (3rd year if I pass these exams), which is mostly based on science, but has some other aspects like law, ethics, health promotion, complementary health enhancement, sociology, epidemiology, knowledge management and all this other 'soft-science' stuff to break things up a little. I'd have to say my favourite topic from the whole course is anatomy and clinical skills--I don't mind cardiovascular physiology. Right now, I'd like to become an anaesthetist or a radiologist, but I'm pretty sure that after experiencing full-time study in hospitals next year, that will be bound to change. I'm excited about the coming hols because I got a summer job at a pathology... and I'm getting a car (let's see your pocket money try and buy that, FLaxes -------------------- |

Computer Gaming.
And I intend to start Gaming Tech or Creative Writing in Uni, if I go. My strongest subjects ever have been sarcasm and English. Kinda. -------------------- Not quite Professional Critic

Oh wow! If you're still in school, that makes Schmeag, Antonious, Gramlin and me the oldest people here. And Schmeag and Ant would be like elders.
That's pretty funky. Anyways. I did Maths Methods, Specialist Maths, IT, English and Studio Arts in my final year of school. Found out that Specialist Maths and Studio Arts is probably the worst combination since both of them had a work load that was the equivalent of all the other subjects put together and then some. I dunno how much time I spent on both of them, but I do know that Studio Arts took up most of my holidays on a morning to 1am type of schedule, and Spec took up pretty much the rest. Breezed through English, thanks to some extensive teaching back when I was 15/16 and my creative writing skills (I won the writing award in the final year of English. Competition was too high to win the general English award) and Maths methods was a walk in the park compared to Spec Maths. IT, well, that had a subject clash with English, so I was supposed to do it in my spare periods (ie, visited the teacher once a week, usually spent an hour going over that weeks work and what needed to be done for homework, and that was about it.) which of course I didn't. IT probably took about an hour or so a week of homework, and gave me 9 extra spare periods. So that was really nice. I happen to be a natural at IT, and extensive general knowledge in the subject from long years of experience certainly helped. Then when exams come round, my two worst subjects, both the maths, ended up being my best, putting me in something like the top ten % of the state. And my best subjects ended up being scaled down at least five or six points each, so they ended up with just above average marks. Man the marking system here is screwed, since it's all comparative. So advice to all. Maths is good for almost anything. But don't ever take an art subject with them. The workload is horrendous, and you won't learn anything, or at least, I didn't. The teacher gave us handouts, I did the necessary work, and kept her well away from any of my work. Mostly just taking advantage of the fact that she didn't know anything about Blender 3D and didn't do drawing stuff. Of course, she did have a large say in what I had to do. Should've done digital paintings... but I don't think I had my tablet pc then. Ahh well, Blender was good for filling my portfolio, lighting studies ftw! And partial tutorials on how I made my models also filled many many pages, and took several weekends of printing, cutting and pasting. Ahhhh. I was so happy to have finished school. I still feel that lovely feeling whenever I look at school students and know that life is over. Really, it feels awesome to know you never have to go back to school, and those sorry buggers waiting by the bus stop do. I dunno, can't help it. I'm evil, I know. -------------------- I am the king of Rome, and above grammar - Sigismund, Roman Emperor.

I, for one, do not doubt that if you keep hacking at it, will do so spectacularly. You just need the right short story.

N'ah, I don't have the skill in me to shine. I can be good, I can be very good, but I'll never be the best in any competition. It's near enough the same in everything. Always near the top of the pile, but never the one that shines.

I think, perhaps, that that might be your definition of yourself. To shine, is simply a matter of defining oneself, making the statement as to why you are different from everyone else. Of leaving an indelible mark in those you interact with, in those who read your writing.
You have plenty of talent, I assure you. I've been on the interwebz for long enough to have seen and spoken to people who truly have shone above that of their peers. Some of them weren't necessarily the most skilled (some really were though), but rather, they defined themselves through their work. They created something unique. It held their stamp, and people recognised that. If you want to shine Flaxes, first you must know what makes you unique, and what stamps your work. What says you are different from all the rest. Quality is only half of shining, the other half is personality, individuality, something that makes people notice you. Everybody has this ability. It is simply a matter of unlocking it. -------------------- I am the king of Rome, and above grammar - Sigismund, Roman Emperor.

I was begging for that to happen. Thanks Schmeag, you've made my day. Unfortunately you do have to die for it. Well at this moment in time I'm one of those bums working a sustenance job in an industry that isn't really very important (I work in a Cinema) and therefore isn't truly apreciated for all the hard work I do for crap pay. Add onto that hours designed to screw with my sleeping pattern and seven quid train fair every time I have to work.
I'm on a bit of a gap year at the moment, working and stuff, hopefully doing a bit of traveling later in the year (Iceland possibly and then either the USA or Eastern Europe in the Summer). I finished my 3rd year of College (not the American Uni type college, but English 6th Form College) last year and left with A2 Levels in Drama and Theatre Studies, English Lit, Psychology and Philosophy, an AS level in Art, a boosted grade in GCSE Maths (I failed it in School I hope to go to Drama School and will be applying this year, but I doubt I'll pass the audition process the first time round as very few people do. If I don't get into Drama School after 3 tries I'll do a degree... either in Drama and Theatre Studies or Philosophy. Then I intend to go and do teacher training and go and teach Drama/Philosophy at 6th form colleges. -------------------- ![]() |Story Write~|~PAE~|~Cybernations| All works posted are © Joshua R Bradshaw, All rights reserved unless otherwise stated |
