Title: Signature Limit
Description: Do we have one?

Schmeag - April 11, 2007 04:26 AM (GMT)
How long can signatures be? Or how big can they be? Or is this unlimited?

Zog the Stout - April 11, 2007 09:22 AM (GMT)
Lots. I set the limit at some immensly high amount. This is becuase I don't want to limit people (As limits on other boards always annoy me), but trust them to make a mature judgement on when their sig is too long.

to be honest zog i think your sig is a tad to long, it does stretch pages a bit.

*AHEM!* :P

Hawkeye does have a point, Zog. Your sig is more than a screen long and is there really any need for a banner link to the site we are on ATM? If you are trying to advertise, isn't it a bit stupid as the new members are already here...?

EDIT: Also, you have exactly the same quote twice!

The Hivemind - April 11, 2007 12:39 PM (GMT)
They do all have a point Zog, please edit you signiture, you dont need so many banners, as most of them (i think) are on the Owc fonr page, and so many qoutes are unessisary.

Schmeag - April 11, 2007 05:31 PM (GMT)
Yes, Zog, your signature was exactly the thing that made me post this thread. Subtle. ;)

Zog the Stout - April 11, 2007 05:39 PM (GMT)
Ah crap. I didn't take much care when I edited it last ;)

Better. ;)

Ricold - April 11, 2007 11:29 PM (GMT)
IMO one of my old friends had it about right when he said you can have any size sig you like, provided your posts were always at least twice the length of your sig, or your sig was only 2-3 lines.

If your sig is larger then your posts, then IMO, it's far too big

Schmeag - April 12, 2007 05:55 AM (GMT)
Unfortunately, most of the conversational posts tend to always be about one line here due to the width of the board.

Ricold - April 12, 2007 04:12 PM (GMT)
Fine, so take it with a pinch of salt. However there are several things that can make even my above work. Write enough to write in enough paragraphs to make it longer then your sig, or reduce your sig. I am of the firm opinion that the best signatures I've seen are the variety that have at most 3 lines of text and about 50 pixels (height) of graphics. With just that, you can portray *so* much information.

A signature should be just that, a small sign off for a post. The information should be sufficient to identify the person and any allegiances, and may contain the odd advert or other random point.

Signatures should *not* be places to collect quotes, contain oversized text (actually the opposite, I've found a lot of people prefer sigs with undersized text), advertise the site that they're being used on* or be somewhere to spout lots of randomness. Small amounts of randomness are fine, large amounts are unnecessary.

For most Warhammer based sites, a name, graphic or banner, and either a line of text or a few links is plenty enough for a sig. If you feel the need to write more, I suggest use of Off Topic forums or profile spaces (for those sites that allow random text in the profile).

*makes a sig*

*What is it about people feeling the need to advertise the site they're on? surely the one place you don't need to link to is the one place a reader already has a link to if they read the link in the first place?

Schmeag - April 13, 2007 02:26 AM (GMT)
Yep, all points I agree with. Quotes just become dull after a while; leave it there even longer and it just seems egotistical. Something novel, flashy and concise is how I'd prefer signatures to be.

Zog the Stout - April 13, 2007 08:34 AM (GMT)
Very well, I will edit out the quotes.

However, Schmeag, I seem to remember that you had the OWC banner in your sig here for quite a while...

Schmeag - April 13, 2007 08:55 AM (GMT)
That was a display of my uber signature skills (aka ego).

thats cool then, just wanted to get it cleared before some started having a go.

Snotty-Goblin - April 16, 2007 11:40 PM (GMT)
Im guessing Im going to get arse arent I? Should I resize it?

gladius2 - April 17, 2007 05:09 PM (GMT)
It is a bit big, but as you don't post overly much, I suppose we could survive...you can't read what it says other wise...

Rugueux DeVere - April 17, 2007 07:40 PM (GMT)
Please tellme if ye have a problem with my sig either... I could resize it if it bothers anyone.

gladius2 - April 17, 2007 07:42 PM (GMT)
your sig, need resizing? hah, you must be kidding, it's one of the smallest!

actually, looking at your sig, I'll check out the links...

I was reading this and decided to have a look at hammer and anvil, the other day, what a wicked site!

I'm starting to look at the links on people's sigs now...

Rugueux DeVere - April 17, 2007 08:08 PM (GMT)
Uh... you can see the huge picture of Roo, right...?

Zog the Stout - April 17, 2007 08:08 PM (GMT)
Nope

Zog

gladius2 - April 17, 2007 08:08 PM (GMT)
Oh, yeah, I remember that now. Not any more...

Rugueux DeVere - April 17, 2007 08:13 PM (GMT)
Huh... I'm not sure if thats good or bad... =P

Schmeag - April 18, 2007 06:54 AM (GMT)
Before, it used to be a comic. Now, it's too big.

Wizwum - April 18, 2007 03:26 PM (GMT)
But it looks cool. Maybe a smaller version? Or a thumbnail, so it can be expanded to the full size thing in a new window? Or make it your Avatar?

Rugueux DeVere - April 18, 2007 05:36 PM (GMT)
I tried making it my Avatr but it said I cannot upload images of this type... But it's a .jpeg...

I will! Looks like you've done a great job there, I only had a brief look, but it looked very nice.
