Just wondered what everyones opinion on here was about it?

Playing it?

Best game in the world ever or over hyped beyond belief?

(There is a slight old skool link as the original GTA was initially being developed on the Amiga.)

@sleepw@lk

I couldn't agree more! I got the special edition for my PS3 and spent well over 20 hours on it already... A few 3am finishes there as can't play it when the kid is up though sad.gif

The TV stations are one of the best new features. The poker channel had me cracking up - "A three!! Three! Threee!! That is no use to anyone at all!". The "war on terror" jokes are great too.

It's funny coz it's true! smile.gif

I don't personally get why everyone is raving about GTA4 quite so much. Yes the graphics have taken a huge leap into the high def next gen, but the gameplay is pretty much the same as it always has been, and the controls are no better.

Saying that, I enjoyed the previous games a lot and had some great fun playing them, so I am guaranteed to play GTA4 just as much. I don't think it is a contender for greatest game ever though.

Not Game of all time.
(- Thats Meglomania on Amiga)
GAME OF THE YEAR wink.gif

I have all the GTA series on a multitude of platforms (XBOX,PS2 & PC) and now XBOX 360.

Although GTA VICE CITY on the PS2 woz great.
( Can`t beat running people down to Gary Numans - Cars) smile.gif

It has 2 be sed that the latest GTA is a mirror of its siblins, but with better GFX.

But now GTA IV is a living breathing city.
The dustbin men even pick up the rubbish.

If you drive into the airport with a bomb in your car, the S.W.A.T team are on you like a ton of bricks. (when did Americans get a brain)

Every bit of this game is so REAL.
You can`t say that of previous versions.

Ok. We are on next gen consoles & we have come 2 expect nothing less, but when you can`t tell the difference between the CGI intro and the actual game footage, you no your on a winner.

Why change a format, wot woz classic to start off with!
Where else can u drive like a madman, moor people down with a Pimped up Range Rover & have a Lap Dance with 2 big Busty Ladies (I meen Ladies loosely) wink.gif
All in the comfort of your own home without getting arrested.

SHEER BRILL smile.gif

Why have a life when Virtually you can have a real ONE. (Its that Gud)

@ Harrison

I agree totally that all the hype about it being revolutionary was very misleading. It is still the same GTA but now more polished, refined and there is MUCH more detail in there.

I walked out my apartment in it the other day and there was this random preacher guy you get on the street shouting stuff. Stood there and listened to it for a bit it was so convincing.

Basically if you didn't like GTA before this won't convince you. But if you loved it before this is an amazing sequel.

One new feature that does need mentioning though is the multiplayer which was hinted out on the PSP games but is fully realised on GTA IV.

Playing "Cops 'n' Crooks" last night where you have a group of you as cops and the others as the criminals. Let me just say, one guy driving the car with three other players blasting out of the windows as you speed around corners is pure bliss!!

This game is unbelievably playable.

Not the huge leap forward in graphics that I had been expecting, but there's that much good stuff in the game that it doesn't matter. This is something I suspect I will be playing for months.

Such a huge amount of small touches have gone into this that it is indeed a masterpiece.

Best game of all time? No..
Best game of the year? Definately.

One last thing about the graphics is the lighting model, it's breathtaking and the views of the city from helicopter are sometimes spectacular!

The problem from my point of view is that the majority of younger gamers these days are so easily won over by the visuals of a game and not by the gameplay. Yes this has always been the case since the first instance of two rival games systems existed, but since the introduction of 3D graphics this has continued to get much worse.

Retro gamers know a game is much more than just graphics, where a really bad looking game can end up being much more enjoyable and playable than one that looks like real life. I think for me this is the current sticking point with a lot of comments floating around about GTA4 and other games releases.

I'm not saying GTA4 isn't a great game. But it also isn't the best thing ever and doesn't quite deserve the level of hype currently being applied to it by all the noob gamers out there. It is an evolution rather than something amazing in the sense of being new. They have just managed to add all of the living universe content into the game that the last generation of consoles were not powerful enough to handle. So basically they can now realise the GTA world as they have always wanted but never could do before due to hardware limitations.

So blame my points of view on the iPod youth of today, or "magpies" as I also like to call them.

Yes, unfortunately there is that and one of the reasons it is usually better to play multiplayer with voice chat off unless you are with a group of friends or people with an ounce of maturity about them.

Definately, the city looks almost completely different depending what time of day it is. They have got dawn and dusk style lighting spot on.

It's funny you talk about graphics and GTA as this is one of the areas that some people moan about as it's not as photo realistic as Gran Turismo and some of the graphics can be a bit rough around the edges.

My worry is that as games start to become more mainstream they will become more shallow. All graphics and no substance.

And there is the problem. Many people over analysis the graphics of a game to the extent that they end up not enjoying it at all because they are so over the top about a small graphical detail that may contain a slight jaggy or rough texture. I don't care. Have they really looked at how far games development has come in the last 10 years? Load up a PSX game from 1997 such as Formula One '97 and you will be blown away by how bad the graphics look to you now. But remember in 1997 when you first saw the game and played it? At the time it blew you away for another reason. You thought the graphics were amazing. However if you disregard the dated graphics and play the game for a bit you quickly start to enjoy it regardless of the graphics. The youth of today can't do that as they can't get beyond the initial upset of graphics not being as polished as another game.

But that has always existed. Who remembers when Zool was first released on the Amiga? Remember how all the critics bashed it, saying the graphics were not as polished as Mario or as fast and smooth as Sonic. And fans of the consoles flocked to bash it too. However it was still a good game in its own right.

Strangely, while I do remember the playground arguments about the different 8-bit systems, I don't remember anyone arguing that a game looked better on a specific platform compared to another. Instead I just remember playing a game on a friend's Speccy and then buying the game for my CPC. We didn't even comment on the differences between versions. Strange really thinking back on it. All that only really started with the 16-bit era.

In short I hated the controls, hated the graphics and hated the fact they took a lot of fun stuff out since the PS2 versions....

I personally thought Saints Row 2 was better. (but still not as good as San Andreas)
