I was thinking, for people who are new to the site, perhaps someone could make a youtube video, describing the site and showing the basic controls. ((Or more either way))

Just a thought really and I'm not sure if it's been mentioned before.
It'd be less reading I suppose and I find it easier to understand something when I see it. Everyone's different though!

And it doesn't even have to be a youtube video, it was the most common one I could think of. I mean any video will do, maybe something we could put here on this site

Interesting idea, but I don't think any of us have the capability of making a video like that. (I know I don't. I can only make videos of DVDs or video games - I can't record anything else since I don't have a video camera or webcam.) I don't know how it should be done, either. Making a video like that would be a LOT of work, even if we had the required hardware. The editing process would take a while.

I like this idea, but it would be rather time consuming. I know there are programs on the internet where you can record what's happening on screen, but I've never used them before. I could always try but it probably wouldn't get done for a while. xD; Though, I guess it depends on how thorough the guide would be.

An easier alternative for this idea would be something like a walkthrough, with screencaps. Also time consuming, but a little less so... it requires less skill but it's not as fancy. It should get the job done nonetheless though.

But in any case, what sort of topics might be covered, exactly...?

Not sure, perhaps the area's you most hear questions about. I think the site would be more friendly if we did have a walk through or something. Do you by any chance know the names of the programs that let you record your screen.

I mean I have some time on my hands, I wouldn't mind working on something and just running it by the admins, and you guys can tell me if I need to add anything or perhaps change anything?

I mean I know how busy you guys are and I'd love to help the site in anyway I can. Sorry a little empty on what topics would be covered, anyone have any idea's or suggestions?

Some people use HyperCam or Fraps to record their videos, but I'm not sure if it's free to use those programs.

I guess the more basic way would be to use programs that already come with your computer:

I think HyperCam leaves a pretty noticable watermark, but it should be free I think. Not sure though. But TigerToes' idea of using Paint and WMM is pretty good too. Anyway, I personally have no qualms about you doing it if you really want to, Crescent. :3 That'd be really great of you to do it! I just don't want you to feel pressured or anything about it.

As for the topics... hm, I guess the process of registering a character and posting in the ferry would be good. Then, maybe some information about farming, tools, etc. - like, how to start a farm, buy/use/upgrade tools and such. Not sure what else though, sorry. n_n;

I feel like going through the trouble of making a video walk-through is like writing in pen. If you mess something up, it'd be a huge hassle to fix it.

If you mess something that you're typing, you can just... change it. Lol.

So like, go for it? But then if you do something wrong, or if it's confusing, you'd prolly have to go through a lot of trouble to change it.

Especially if it's just screenshots, it'd be just as easy, if not easier, to make a thread with pictures in it.

....I don't even know what some of these programs are y'all are speaking about. XD

But using screenshots, and adding captions/subtitles in an imaging program, and then putting them together in WMM (perhaps with audio tracks taken from HM games) wouldn't be too hard... It would be time-consuming, though. So maybe multiple people could help making the slides for it and then someone could string them together in WMM or some similar program (with music), and upload it?

Anyways, to business. While I love the sound of a video going through how to work OoS, I'm not sure how well I feel about this for one reason- Laziness. While OoS is a very wonderful site and we're never ending in looking for ways to make it more appealing to the eye, fun and for the majority of everyone to like our ideas I'm not sure how dedicated it shows those who only watch that video.

Hm.

What I mean is, while we're all here and functioning wonderful is because we went through the process of figuring out (If we had a lot of trouble or not) to work in the environment of OoS and took our time to sit down and read through those guidelines, others will just have to sit down and watch a movie. The easy way out.

We sat and read through the list that looked dreadingly long until you began to read it, and dedicated those moments to actually understanding the rules.

Someone who just clicks the 'Play' button, might easily sign up, and realize very quickly they can't handle it because we made it look so easy (to some it might be difficult? I dunno) to navigate and create profiles all that fun stuff.

Annnnd.

What if they ask for other movies on how to do the profile table etc.? Would we really want to do more videos, because making one says we're more willing than not to make other videos.

I do like the idea though, and I'm sorry if I'm not making sense. It's a school morning with little sleep I'd gotten the night before, and studying for a test (Yay for OoS to help me stall! <333) before the bus.

If you didn't get what I'm saying just tell me, and I'll try to explain it again later when I'm not frantically running around my room trying to get ready for school.

Mrs. Darcy, I completely get what our saying no worries.

I just want everyone else to know if I started working on a project like this, I wouldn't be pressured into it, I know how all understand you are. But I really like Mrs. Darcy's point, and honestly if the cons out weight the pros then I say it's not worth it.

I just wanted to help promote the site, but I know like me and everyone else on this site we all had to work hard to understand everything and go from there, really shows our dedication, although I got help from Dragon, she really gave me all the details but I did do reading on my own.

Hm, maybe a quick basic video then? Just telling where everything is, and actually on the video saying, 'We've shown you the areas, basic reading is up to you!' or something like that. But then there is that problem about others expecting more videos, hm.

Ohh, you bring up a really good point, Rach. I hadn't even thought of that. :X

Considering that, I guess a basic overview video would be best. If people expect more indepth videos and answers/guides to other things... well, I guess there's the alternative of making a 'walkthrough' with text and screenshots if you don't want to go to the length of making a whole video. And they can always just ask someone if they still need the help.
