<br><br>Fireworks. Even from a young age Alison had always been fascinated by fireworks. The explosions, the brilliant flashes of the light, the pretty displays that people always worked up for these special occasions, not to mention the fact that it gave her a reason to shut up shop early at the farm. It all came together to provide her with an opportunity to go out for a relaxing night and enjoy the show. All in all she was glad that the mayor had decided to make this year’s summer end with a bang.
<br><br>
’I hope I can get a good spot for the show. I would hate to climb all the way up here and then not be able to see anything.’ Alison thought as she climbed Lazuli Hill carrying a blanket and a picnic basket. She had decided to come out to one of her favorite spots on the island in order to view the fireworks tonight. She had climbed up to the summit many times before for special days like this and already had a good spot in mind providing that said spot hadn’t already been taken.
<br><br>
The picnic basket was filled with a few snacks from the store. Some cookies, bread, and sandwich meat, etc just in case the situation called for it. She had everything that she needed for a pleasant little evening picnic. Nothing she had made, thankfully, she was trying to celebrate after all, not poison herself.
<br><br>
Even after living on her own as long as she had Alison was still no Betty Crocker in the kitchen. She held no delusions about that. Her meals were inedible at best and downright toxic the rest of the time. It was surprising that she had made it as long as she had without the ability to cook but somehow she always seemed to get by. Still, it would be nice to cook for herself at least part of the time. Perhaps if she would have listened to all her mother’s cooking lessons instead of running off to help her dad and her brother on the farm she would be better at it but there was no reason to worry about it now. She had sort of come to accept it.
<br><br>
As she reached her spot Alison was delighted to find that it was, indeed, not taken. She sat down her basket and hurriedly spread out the blanket, not want to waste any time. With her task completed and her spot secured she plopped down on her blanket and opened up the picnic basket to reach the goodies inside. She plucked a cookie from her stash and then laid back against the blanket munching and staring up at the sky.
<br><br>
At least she wouldn’t have to worry about rain. Everything was pointing to perfect weather for the firework show and the only thing that could make this evening any better would be if she had some company to enjoy it with. That being said she was sure some more people would be showing up soon and there was always the chance that she might find some interesting conversation. She would just have to keep her eyes open and see what she could find.

Fireworks! Everyone loved fireworks, especially Hikari. She loved to watch them shoot up into the sky and explode, a different color emerging from each new starburst. Some even had shapes! She saw some like that one year on Independence Day. There were blue and red fireworks shaped like stars! Of course... She couldn't really remember where that was though... In Salt Lake City? No... She was too young then... Maybe it was in Galveston? ... No... That was too recent... She couldn't remember.<p>

Kuro, on the other hand, tried to forget everything about his time in foster care, or as he liked to call them, "the dark years." He didn't care to remember in which hell hole he he saw those star shaped fireworks. Actually, he'd rather have all of his teenage years wiped from his memory. But... He couldn't do that... There were still those few diamond memories in the rough of crappy ones.<p>

However, those crappy memories had some value to them... They serve as an example of what not to do. He was responsible for his sister now, and she deserved a much better adolescence than he had. And to help make it as awesome as he could, he was going to get an awesome spot for the fireworks show!<p>

Hikari followed Kuro up the winding path around Lazuli Hill to get to Feldspar Summit. You could see the entire sky from the top of the hill, so surely that would be the best spot in town to go see the show! Hopefully, they were getting there early enough to get a spot!<p>

He trudged up the hill, Hikari right behid him, carrying a blanket to spread on the ground and sit upon. They were almost to the summit! He could see the top.... Kuro suddenly stopped in his tracks, Hikari bumping into him from behind. Someone had beaten them to the spot. Well, they better not pitch a fit about sharing, because Kuro and Hikari were coming through! Kuro started walking again, Hikari following behind, and walked right past the other person and spread his blanket and plopped down, not saying a word.<p>

Hikari waited until her brother spread the blanket, then took a seat next to him, but instead of staring up at the sky, waiting for the show to start like her brother, Hikari looked over her shoulder at the redheaded woman sitting diagonally from them, a curious look in her eyes.

<br><br>’Such a nice evening.’ Alison thought as she stared up at the stars. ’The sky is clear, the stars are bright and beautiful and I have my favorite spot and a basket full of food. How could anyone not want to be out on a night like tonight?’ It had always baffled her to see people shying away from events like this. I mean who wouldn’t like a nice quiet evening to themselves with a little entertainment thrown into the mix? She was kind of surprised that she hadn’t seen anyone on her way up here but then again the night was still young and the show hadn’t started so people still had time.
<br><br>
As she was laying there waiting the red head began to connect the tiny points of light up in the sky. It had been a long since she had traced the constellations but she quickly found the old shapes and patterns that her father had taught her. Soon she was picking out the most famous ones. The big dipper, the little dipper, Orion, Draco and many others, they were all beautiful there in the blackness of night and pretty soon they would be joined by the bright flashes of he fireworks.
<br><br>
It was in this state of wonderment that Alison suddenly found herself distracted by the noise of another group of people. Instinctively she sat up as a boy and a younger girl that she could only assume was his sister, passed by and spread out a blanket a short distance away from her. She watched the pair curiously not missing the fact that the two had walked by without saying a word to her. Not that this particularly discouraged her but it was something of note.
<br><br>
As the siblings took a seat Alison also noticed that her presence hadn’t gone completely unnoticed. The little girl especially seemed to have taken an interest in her and had even turned around to look at her as if she expected some kind of response. Fortunately Alison was just the person to give her one.
<br><br>
Never a shy one, Alison sat up on her elbows and smiled at the young girl. “Hello.” She said as she gave the girl a friendly wave. “Did you come out to see the firework show too? I’m Alison, Alison Summers.” Hopefully the girl and her brother would be interested in talking. If not this was going to be a long quiet evening. She wouldn’t let it spoil her mood if they didn’t of course but that being said she still hoped that she wouldn’t have to pass the night in awkward silence.

Kuro let out an inaudible sigh as the redhead started to talk to them. There went his quiet evening... Well, maybe quiet wasn't the right word to use since they were out to see the fireworks, but that wasn't the point! He was never really much of a talker in the first place. Fortunatly, Hikari tended to be a bit of a chatter box once she realized that someone was nice. Kuro, not so much. He preferred to keep most of his thoughts to himself.<p>

A simple nod to the redhead was a perfectly acceptable response for Kuro. After that, he turned his attention back to the sky. Maybe the show would start soon and then the explosions in the sky would be too loud for anyone to talk. Yes. Hopefully that would be the case.<p>

Much friendlier than her brother, Hikari smiled back at the woman and gave a small wave. Figuring that Kuro, being in his normal sourpuss mood, didn't say much, Hikari decided to take it upon herself to do all of the talking. Not that she minded at all. Hikari could be a social butterfly when she wanted to be.<p>

Hikari gave a small nod in response to Alison's question, and said in a somewhat quiet voice, trying to hide her normal slur, "I'm Hikari Tanaka... And this is my big brother Kuro..." Then, she gave a shy smile. She loved talking to people... She just didn't like meeting people all that much. You could never really tell what kind of a person they were until all of that was over and done with.

<br><br>Alison chuckled to herself at the reaction that she got from the two people sitting apart from her. The young girl who she was already thinking of as the little sister by this point turning around inquisitively and saying hello, she seemed perhaps a little shy considering how soft she was talking. Maybe she wasn’t sure how her brother would react. Then there was the older brother who gave her nothing more than a cursory nod. He was not as inquisitive as his sister and probably didn’t care if Alison talked to him or not by the look of things.
<br><br>
The redhead knew this dynamic very well. She had lived it for most of her life. Granted if this had been Alison and her brother she would have most likely been running around doing something that would make her brother have kittens. Then again she supposed that was kind of the way of sisters with older brothers, the former doing anything and everything to get under the latter’s skin.
<br><br>
The girl spoke and came to confirm what Alison had already surmised. She did however learn some additional information in the form of their names. That would be useful to remember as they went forward as the girl at least seemed friendly enough to want to continue the conversation at the moment. Never mind that the brother didn’t want to talk maybe if she got the sister on her good side the brother would follow as well.
<br><br>
“It’s nice to meet you Hikari and you as well Kuro.” She said with a soft smile. She wasn’t sure how talkative the girl would be but would extend her hand in conversation in case she wanted it. “It’s a nice night to view them isn’t? I don’t think we could have asked for better weather to close out the summer with. You can see the stars perfectly too. The fireworks are going to look nice exploding against that background won’t they?”

Great... Kuro thought as the woman addressed him again. He wasn't going to be rude and ignore her, but he didn't really feel like holding up a conversation either... Which meant there was only one thing to do... Get out of it! Well, fortunately, that was something he was pretty darn good at. He just simply nodded back at her and said, "Same here." Then, his attention went back to the sky. Hopefully she could take a hint.<p>

Repositioning herself so she didn't have to twist around to see the lady speak, Hikari smiled and nodded. "Nice to meet you too," she said, her voice still timid and shy, then glanced up at the sky again after the woman spoke. The sky was beautiful... Just like in the country... She liked her homes in the country much better than in the city. The city was always too bright to see the stars. But in places like this, you could see all of them from the brightest to the dimmest... They could all be seen.<p>

Hikari looked back at Alison after a moment and gave a small nod followed by a soft smile. "They sure will. I wonder what kinds they'll have.... I like the ones that look like shooting stars... And the big ones that look like flowers when they explode... she replied, slightly more confidently than before, but still considerably quiet in volume.

<br><br>Alison let out an amused chuckle, more to herself than anyone else, as she noted Kuro’s continued resistance to her attempts at polite conversation. It would take more than that to stop her from trying to talk to him but for now at least she could let him be. She had been doing this a long time and didn’t want to be overbearing. That might close him off entirely. Besides, she did at least have the sister that seemed interested in conversation so she could pursue that avenue for a while. Who knew? Maybe she could get the little girl to not be so reserved around her.
<br><br>
Turning her full attention to Hikari for the time being Alison picked up right where she had left off. “Oh I bet they will have all kinds. The town likes to go all out for these kinds of events. I remember last year one of my favorites was a big flower one that created a huge explosion and lit up the sky with orange and white light. Then as it was fading away each trail of light crackled apart like a bunch of little sparklers.” Alison talked with her hands a lot and she did so now spreading her hands as if they were blown apart and then letting them slowly fall to her side to simulate the explosion.
<br><br>
The redhead regarded Hikari with an open and friendly expression. Surely she would have seen the two at some point if they came up here often for the fireworks displays. It hadn’t been a year since the last one so maybe these two were new in town. “Is this your first time coming out for one of the firework displays? If so I think you might be impressed. There’s nothing like watching fireworks from Lazuli Hill and I should know because I’ve seen some pretty big firework shows all over the world.”

Hikari blinked, becoming confused when the woman started using her hands while she talked. Surely she didn't know sign language... Not many people she met did. Her full attention on the hands now, Hikari watched the woman talk, not catching a word of what she said. She frowned a little, not sure what the woman had said, and sad that she missed it.<p>

Hikari hated it when things like that happened, especially during school. In school, she couldn't necessarily always ask the teacher to repeat what they said if they were going too fast, or she didn't see what they said, so she always had to stay after to get the rest of her notes and to make sure that she didn't miss anything important.<p>

Noting that the woman's lips were moving again, Hikari refocused her attention there. She nodded her head in response and smiled, saying, "Yes. This is the first one we've been here to see. We just moved here last Spring. Good to know that it'll be a good show though."

<br><br>’hmm…That’s funny. I could have sworn I was speaking clearly.’ Sure there were times when Alison got excited and talked quite fast but usually she was a very good communicator and didn’t have to repeat herself a lot. Another good question was why did the girl seem so disappointed by the fact that she had missed what she said? Hopefully she wasn’t doing anything to upset the girl. “Oh I’m sorry. I sometimes get carried away. If I start talking too fast just let me know. I was just explaining about some of the different kinds of fireworks they have, I said that I like the ones that have lots of little explosions after the big one.”
<br><br>
Alison smiled warmly at the girl after she had finished repeating her earlier statement. She didn’t mind. Hikari confirmed her suspicions by saying that they were both pretty new to the island which meant that they should be in a surprise when the show started. “That’s great. Let me officially welcome you both to the island then. I’m one of the local farmers. I run the Summer Meadows farm if you’re ever interested in stopping by. I’m usually there, working so if you ever need anything don’t hesitate to ask.” She could have mentioned the brewery but thought it was for the best to keep that bit of information to herself with one so young. They might have already heard about it but it was still best to err on the side of caution unless asked directly.
<br><br>
As she spoke the redhead watched the girl’s face. Hikari was showing a lot of concentration but on what? Alison didn’t know why her words would demand all of the girl’s attention but whatever the reason was she was slowly becoming aware that something was off here. It was almost like the girl was reading her lips which she guessed would make sense. The girl had gotten distracted by her hands which would explain some things. That being said actually approaching the subject was a little more difficult in the execution. She couldn’t come right out and ask her if she was deaf. Not only would it be rude but if she wasn’t Hikari might be offended by the suggestion. All she could do now was wait and keep looking for clues. Hopefully Hikari would tell her if there was something she could do to ease the conversation.

Kuro quietly listened to the two girls talk, not really interested in the conversation. Besides, Hikari was definitely the one out of the two of them who liked to talk more. Well... figuratively speaking of course. The girl really just enjoyed being around other people in general.<p>

Hikari nodded, paying careful attention to the woman's words. So she ran a farm. Did she have lots of animals? Was was it like? Hikari and Kuro stayed at two farms before, but those were two totally different kinds of farms... and two totally different experiences.<p>

"Thank you," Hikari said, smiling. She then turned around to her brother, and said, dragging him into the conversation now, "You heard that, Nii-chan? We can go visit Alison's farm!"<p>

Kuro glanced at his sister and nodded. "I heard," he said. Then, he turned his gaze toward Alison. Well, something seemed to have caught his attention. He turned slightly so he didn't have to crane his neck, and asked, "Summer Meadows.... Like the brewery?"

<br>
<br><br>Alison was pleased that Hikari sounded so excited. She really didn’t mind visitors. In fact she invited most people she met. Living as far out of town as Lazuli Acres was she didn’t get very many. Worse than that was that her neighboring farms were so spread out she never really saw anyone. For a social creature like Alison that could be tough at times so it was only natural for her to extend a hand of hospitality to those who were interested.
<br><br>
However she was not as interested in the girl’s excitement so much as when Kuro actually turned to her with a curious look and spoke. It wasn’t many words but considering she had expected almost none from him for the rest of the evening it was surprising none the less. However it wasn’t surprising enough to take Alison off her game and she quickly responded with a pleasant, warm smile. “That’s right. Like the brewery.” So they had heard of her claim to fame. All good things she hoped but then again the brewery was usually talked about pretty highly in town.
<br><br>
“I actually run both. The brewery is a fairly new venture of mine that I started up this past summer.” She paused to chuckle before turning back to Kuro. “I’ve really been kind of surprised with how well it has been received.” The redhead looked Kuro over again as if searching for some connection that she couldn’t find at the moment. “Have you been by already? I would have hated to miss you if did.”
<br><br>
Turning her attention back to Hikari Alison decided to see if the girl really was interested in coming over. “Do you like animals Hikari? I have some cows and goats and even a friendly cat that you might you might enjoy meeting.” What was a farm without animals and if Hikari was so inclined what was the harm in showing the girl around? “If you stop by sometime I could give you the tour. I’m sure they would like meeting you as well.”

Kuro nodded, quite happy with himself for being able to chime into a conversation with a few words and not be dragged down by having to continue... Wait.... NOO!!! Kuro's self satisfactory feeling flew away as soon as she started asking questions. But it was okay. He could answer a simple question, right? Of course he could! Kuro looked back over his shoulder at Alison and answered, "No not yet, but I hear about it all the time."<p>

Hikari smiled and nodded. She loved animals! She had all kinds of stuffed animals. She had a teddy bear, a pink bunny, a wolf, and even a ginormous tiger! ... Okay, so maybe not quite that many, but that was beside the point. "You will?" Hikari questioned, the smile on her face only able to grow. Then, she turned to her brother, gave him the most innocent, cute smile she could muster, and said, "Nii-chan, can we pleeeease go to Alison's farm?["/b]

<br>
<br><br>Kuro had made a fatal flaw. He had shown Alison that he was interested in something. There was no stopping her now. “All good things I hope?” She asked with a pleasant smile. “Anyways you should stop by sometime. You can take the grand tour of the brewery while Hikari is off with the animals. I could even let you try some free samples if you were interested.” She paused for a moment to look over at Hikari and chuckled. “Plus, it already looks like Hikari is excited about coming.”
<br><br>
To say Hikari was excited was an understatement. From the moment the red haired farmer had mentioned the animals she had seen the girl’s eyes light up like a Christmas tree. She had definitely found something the girl liked there. When she turned and pulled together the sweet little sister routine it was all Alison could do not to chuckle. She just smiled and watched the brother and sister interact knowing full well were this was going.
<br><br>
Alison had tried moves like that on her brother but she had never been good at pulling off the sweet, innocent act in her younger days. She had been much too tomboyish to ever convince people she was the innocent one. Hikari though, she could pull it off like a pro. Alison imagined that the girl knew what she was doing and knew exactly what buttons to press to get Kuro’s sweet side to come out. He might not show it while Alison was around but she could see that sweet side hiding there for the people who knew how to get to it.
<br><br>
Suddenly Alison had an idea and her face lit up. “Oh and while I’m thinking on the subject, Oktoberfest will be coming up next season. I don’t know how I could forget it with as much work as I’ve put into it. You should come if it’s something that you’re interested in Kuro. It’s looking like it will be a pretty fun event.” It wasn’t much but the redhead thought that it would be nice to invite him anyways. Besides, it was advertising for the brewery and she couldn’t turn that down.

A small sigh escaped Kuro. There was no getting out of the conversation now, that was clear. But... maybe this wouldn't be all that bad. She was offering free samples after all, and well... why turn down something free? Didn't someone once say that the best things in life were free? Whoever he was, he must have been a pretty smart guy.<p>

"All good things," Kuro answered her question, giving a small nod of reassurance. "Free samples huh? .... Well... if you insist..." he continued, the teeniest traces of a microscopic smile upon his face. It really was too bad that Hikari was facing the other way. She'd get a kick out of seing him smile... Then again, Kuro was damn glad she didn't see. His sister could pick them out waaay too easily, and the last thing he needed was other people getting all up in his business all because he smiled.<p>

"Yeah, Nii-chan! You're not getting out of this one!" Hikari chimed in as she turned to look at her brother, a big mischevious smile on her face. She shot him the puppy dog eyes one more time for good effect. She wanted to see all the farm animals so bad!<p>

Kuro stared at his sister, trying to desensitize himself. He honestly didn't feel like getting up early on his day off to bring Hikari to some dinky farm... even if he would get to go to the brewery too. He cast a quick glance at Alison then looked back at Hikari and signed a small quick "No!"<p>

No? Noooooo! Hikari was gonna have to kick it up a notch! She switched from her normal puppy dog eyes to sad puppy dog eyes, trying to look as heartbroken as she possibly could. "Please." Hikari signed back, trying to cute her way into making him cave.<p>

A moment passed and it happened. He caved! A heavy defeated sigh escaped him and he looked back over at Alison. "So I'm off on Sundays... Sound good?" he asked, the defeat hidden beneath his usual practiced tone, however, it was still there.<p>

"Oktoberfest huh?" Kuro asked, interest popping up again. "Sounds like fun. I'll think about it."

<br>
<br><br>It was kind of amusing watching Kuro as he tried to squirm his way out of the conversation. He really didn’t like to talk which was sad. He didn’t seem like such a bad guy and Alison could tell by the way he treated his sister that the two had an extremely close relationship. It made her a little homesick to see her own brother and her mother but she tried not to let that register on her face. She would make a trip home soon, perhaps when the farm got a little less busy.
<br><br>
“Excellent!” Alison said cheerfully as Kuro reassured her of the brewery’s good standing in the community. “And yes if you come you can try the different beers. A few free samples never hurt anyone and you never know I might win over a new customer. I’ll be looking for you.” The redhead grinned across at Kuro hopefully. Was that a little smile? Yes, she thought she saw one. Apparently she had stumbled across something Mr. Tanaka liked. She would have to see what she could do about that when he stopped by.
<br><br>
Alison set back at watched as the brother and sister discussed the matter. Well, it was a type of discussion. It was really more of Hikari using those big, sad eyes to get her point across. When Kuro signed the word ‘No’ to the girl the farmer felt her own heart drop instantly. Here she had her hopes up and then Kuro dashed them with one motion of his hand. Did he think he could get away with it by using sign language to cover…Her mind halted as sudden realization dawned on her. Sign language could only mean one thing, Hikari was deaf.
<br><br>
It all made sense. Why the girl was so quiet, why she watched everyone’s lips so carefully, she couldn’t hear or at least not very well. Instantly all of the aggravation she felt at Kuro for trying to trick her left and she felt like an idiot for not realizing all of this sooner. No wonder the girl was so shy around her. ’She’s probably scared to death that I would think she was strange if she let me know. Well I’ll just have to fix this little problem right now.’ Secretly the redhead wondered how they would react when they found out that she knew sign language specifically Kuro for trying to be tricky and get one over on her. Not today though.
<br><br>
With a smile Alison began speaking and signing at the same time. ”Sundays sound great. Stop by any time. I’ll be there.” There, now the secret was out. She hoped that Kuro didn’t mind her jumping in with it like that but because it had taken her so long to figure it out she felt like it was her responsibility to make up for lost time and let both of them know that they didn’t have to make any sort of special concessions for her sake. Chuckling at her little surprise she continued. ”And I really do hope you’ll come to Oktoberfest Kuro. I’d like to see you there.’

Hikari grinned a satisfied grin once her brother gave in. She was going to see the farm! Excitement started to build up as she turned to look back at Alison to see her response, but her excitement really piqued when she saw Alison start to sign! Just knowing that someone else on the island besides Nii-chan could sign immediatly made Hikari's night!<p>

The strawberry blonde's face immediatly lit up, her excitement filling the air as she quickly and excitedly signed back, "You can sign too!" The surprise and excitement filled Hikari up until she couldn't contain it. There was definantly nothing that made her happier than meeting someone who knew how to sign!<p>

Kuro, on the other hand, wasn't all that thrilled. On one hand, he knew this would make things a lot easier on Hikari... But on the other hand, that means she saw him, and well... That wasn't really meant to be seen. Kuro tried to not focus on his slight embarassment, and just let Hikari have her moment of happiness. The kid needed it.<p>

He nodded in response to both questions, not really in the mood to talk now that his little plan had been foiled... not that he really felt like talking in the first place. However, he was saved as she sound of the first firework filled the night. Kuro nudged Hikari's arm and nodded upward, and Hikari's eyes followed, looking up just in time to see the first of many fireworks to come explode in the sky, lighting up the darkness with green sparkles.

<br><br>Alison smiled as she watched the girl brighten. Yep that had done it, Hikari was finally looking like she wanted to open up. ’I guess finding someone who knows how to sign with her is a pretty big deal. I suppose not too many people have taken the time to learn around here.’ in any case it warmed Alison’s heart to see the girl so happy which made her think that revealing that little secret about herself hadn’t been such a bad idea after all.
<br><br>
”Yes I learned how while I was traveling around the world. It’s always useful to know how to communicate with people no matter where you are and even without knowing the native languages of the countries I visited there was usually at least someone somewhere who spoke sign language. You just have to learn where to look.” Alison said in an effort to explain her knowledge of the language to the girl. That was the way of the road though. It was always good to be able to pick up on things like that quickly.
<br><br>
Alison would have said more but sadly that was when the first firework lit the sky. That effectively put an end to all conversation. It was a shame as the redhead was really enjoying talking with the two siblings but she supposed that at least she had said enough to convince them to come see her on the farm sometime. Hopefully Kuro wouldn’t be too embarrassed that she had caught him using sign language because she really was looking forward to the opportunity of seeing them both again. Only time would tell she guessed but for now at least she could just sit back and enjoy the show above her.
