Title: Elena Undone
Felicity - February 25, 2011 09:07 AM (GMT)
I have to say, I anticipated this movie for months before it was finally released and I was able to get ahold of a copy. I anticipated it and also wasn't sure if I would enjoy it. I can't say I enjoyed Claire Of The Moon, but decided to give Elena Undone a go.
I was thrilled with this movie! The pacing, the casting, the storyline, it was just fantastic. Now, the ending wasn't my cup of tea (no spoilers from me I promise!) but it was a truly fantastic film. It has made it to the Top Five list for me, competing for first place with Imagine Me & You.
Have you seen it? What did you think? :D

I haven't seen it yet, but I'm itching to get it! :)

It's well worth the itchy wait!

I enjoyed the movie, but i thought the "orgasm" scene was over the top. if you don't know the one i mean, it was just her face- for what seemed like about 5 minutes!
anyway, saw the movie at our Gay Movie Festival called OutFlix in Memphis. My favorite movie was "A Marine Story" check the trailer:
http://www.wolfevideo.com/products/marine-story-a/It's great to have the general quality of Lesbian/lesbian themed movies on the rise.

Just finished watching 'Elena Undone'. Not too bad, not great. Peyton's name is TRACIE DINWIDDIE HAHAHAHAHAHA. My she IS beautiful. (What's in a name? Reminds me of the time I worked for HBO and was at a customer's home and she signed her order 'Candy Box'. HBO was a very serious company, just starting out and all, so I asked to see her driver's license for confirmation. That's not even funny compared to Dinwiddie!) Elena, the female lead, had a honker on her that wouldn't quit. I wanted to watch them kissing but all I could see was how much bigger her nose was than DINWIDDIE'S! Oh, my I'm laughing myself stupid.
Could it be the 4 beers I had at dinner??

I also have another called 'The Girl' but haven't watched it yet.

Maybe it was the four beers that made you focus on those particular areas. Dinwiddie's last name is pretty funny, but I try not to laugh too much because I was teased relentlessly as a child for my last name. I do pity her.
As for that nose... Well, due to Traci's beauty, I just focused on her. Got me through it!
I really have to get a copy of A Marine Story, I've heard a lot of good things about it. Haven't heard of The Girl, but I'll be searching for that one too.
Dinwiddie... :ph43r:

It must not have been the 4 beers at dinner (and I was the lightweight of the group!)
because I'm still laughing today. I just wish 'they' would come up with a lesbian movie that was built on the premise that lesbianism was ok and go from there. That's why the L-Word was so popular (well, and for other reasons as well) and JB&M is the pinnacle of fanfic ... the foundation of these two great lesbian media is; being a lesbian is 'normal' and they built great stories on top of that premise.
So many lesbian stories and movies still struggle with the moral implications of being a lesbian and I wish they'd just get over it. Gina's work is a prime example of 'getting over' the lesbian factor and just writing damn good fiction that star lesbians.
Blacks have probably already gone through this metamorphosis into moral respectability. Movies/TV/books in the 1950's most likely focused on the struggles of blacks being accepted. Today, Denzel Washington, Samual Jackson, etc. star in great movies, their being black not a factor to the story.
Not sure if I'm explaining this very well. I'm a lesbian. You're a lesbian (I'm guessing.) So what great stories can be written about us if we just accept that and go on?
The Marine looks good but hope it's not a angst piece about the struggle of being a lesbian!

ME?! A lesbian! Nah, never ;)
I know exactly what you're saying. The few and far between movies that are decent still have problems with them. I could make a huge list, but frankly we all know the issues revolving around lesbians in film/books.
The day a movie is made where it's saying right off the bat - it's OK to be a lesbian and go from there is the day I'll tell my government I'm in a lesbian relationship. Which basically means, it ain't gonna happen. There's always a twist, always a catch. And it's pathetic.
No wonder we stick with the wonderful Gina, authors like her, Kallmaker, Gerri Hill to name a few. All we have, really, is our books.
I think The Marine falls into that category of being an angst piece about the struggles of being a lesbian and to add more to it, being a lesbian in the military. I won't judge until I've seen, but it reminds me of a wonderful movie with Glenn Close - Serving In Silence.
Let's hope that film-makers are not so desperate already that they're re-making storylines we've all seen before...

Happy to do so! Must say, bit of a spoiler alert, I could be giving too much away here, but I don't think it takes away from seeing this film yourselves!
:ph43r: SPOILER ALERT :ph43r:
At first I was somewhat hesitant about watching this. The Military and I are not on speaking terms. But I watched it because Dreya Weber (The Gymnast) is a truly fantastic actress. It also piqued my interest to know that Paris Pickard is an out actress, so that was a bonus.
I initially thought it would be a movie about a woman whose discharged from the Marines and embarks on a relationship with a younger woman, hence the trepidation. Seen that before and it never ends well.
But, within the first ten minutes, I was intrigued. It wasn't so much a story about a woman who was a lesbian and discharged from the Marines, it was much more than that. It was about a solider who fought for her country, only to have her country turn their back on her. The story deals with Alex Everett returning home and picking up the pieces of a life she's not sure how to deal with. Running along two old friends has its own ups and downs. There's Leo, whom she's known since high school and in fact dated. Then there's Holly, who she also knew in high school (they were a trio of friends) who accepts Alex for who she is - Holly is the first person Alex 'comes out' to.
Then there's Saffron. Punk with attitude, although she doesn't seem to quite fit the punk lifestyle, you just know she's acting out for her own reasons, which are revealed.
The story line has been said to drag at some points, but I didn't find that. Like I said, I went in not sure about this movie and have watched it and decided it is indeed one I am totally thrilled that I watched. Several lines in particular have stayed with me - Failure is not falling, it's not getting back up again. That is so true.
And it made me think. Not many movies do, to be honest. But there was one part where Everett's ... higher in command (no idea to be honest...) tells her that the whole DADT policy is based on the ideal that if a country allows gays and lesbians to fight and die for that country, how can they justify not allowed marriage? And I'd not realized that before, so it really did make me think and applaud the writer Ned Farr (also director) for his script.
Out of ten, I'm giving it a nine. Everett's sexuality wasn't actually the main point in the movie, it was her dealing with the outfall of being discharged and returning home. But it could have been given a more serious role in the film and to understand that, watch it. Watch it twice, it's worth it!

No, not really. It's about having to hide because of don't ask, don't tell.
It's really a great movie about one woman's life and how the law effected her circumstance.
Kind of a "Karate Kid" for lesbians. Really well done, with triumph on the horizon. It is NOT an erotica film. Just a really good story- well told.
It can be rented from Netflix and Itunes, i think.
I bought a copy of both movies= Elaina Undone and A Marine Story= from Wolfe Video. They are the largest producer and carrier in the world of Gay connected movies.

I simply adore Wolfe Video! The pricing is actually pretty decent as well and to ship things to Australia isn't as bad as I thought it would be. I have my eye on a number of movies from there that I'm hoping to obtain. Desert Hearts the Limited Edition is a must-have for any lesbian I think!

I'm looking forward to watching both Elena Undone and Marine Story, although, i have concerns that Elena Undone will be the typical "she stays with her husband and pretends she isn't gay yada yada."
Anyone watched Out at the Wedding with Cathy DeBuono? Very cute little lesbian flick. It's a sweet comedy. Some of the acting is a little iffy. DeBuono who isn't the main character steals the show.
Anyone seen the Purple Sea? I've been waiting for it to come out for a while. I think the subtitles are in English. Looks fascinating.
Felicity - March 27, 2011 03:37 AM (GMT)
All I can say about Elena is that you'll enjoy it Jude!
I have not seen Out At The Wedding, I'm very peculiar about my films. If it's not done well, I don't watch it regardless! But I will try it at some point. And I have The Purple Sea ready to go on my USB of Things To Watch Eventually, but again, haven't gotten around to it!
