London,

Supposedly the most beautiful city of the nineteenth century. Filled with life, culture, happiness, peace, prosperity. Flourishing under the watchful eye of the Law and His Majesty, King George III. Successful men and women own multiple houses. Children frolic in the streets, even the weather is fine, for London.

But this is just a screen...

London,

The bleakest city of them all. Murders left and right. Poverty forcing people into the streets to beg. The Law is just a twisted institution with bribes, corruption, and more death. For a while it seemed as though it was just a phase and that it would end. But, oh no, it's just the beginning. And now that they've seen exactly what the city can do to itself, everyone agrees that there's
No Place Like London.

Toby is a scrawny child. He is only about 5'6, much to his dismay. He has short brown hair that is, on most occasions, unkempt. It would appear as if he had been deprived of a brush for quite some time. On a good day, you'll find that he only has a few scattered dirt stains on his pale face. One of his best features is his eyes. They are a piercing blue shade, and despite their mystique, they only add to his pathetic appearance.

history (2 paragraphs or 15 detailed bullet points):
Tobias Ragg was never what you would call a special child. His parents didn't ever plan on having children. Life was hard enough caring for just the two of them. But his birth was welcomed, and they took it all in stride. It wasn't easy having a baby. What with the plague going around, and poverty surrounding them, life wasn't exactly a picnic. They tried though. Peter went to work every morning before the sun rose, and returned well after dark. Because of his career he missed most of Toby's childhood. He did savor the few moments that he could spend with him though. Peter worked as an assistant to a butcher, which was far from being pleasant. But it did bring home some extra food for his family.
However, as Toby turned eight years old, a great tragedy struck their family. Peter had fallen ill with the plague. Immediately, young Toby was dropped off at the orphanage where his mother swore she would return for him. "Once your father is well." She had said. Unfortunately, that day never came. Peter passed on only a few days later. Toby never came to know of this news, as his mother never came to retrieve him. Rather, he ended up with Signor Adolfo Pirelli; King of the Barbers. Though he endured abusive treatment, he stayed with the man. For five years he worked for Pirelli. Until one day, a gentleman came. Todd, his name was. Sweeney Todd. When Signor Pirelli went to pay him a visit, he mysteriously disappeared. From there on, Toby worked for Mrs. Lovett at her pie emporium.
This went on for nearly a year. As business continued to grow, his suspicions toward Mr. Todd grew as well. Something wasn't right about that man. He tried to warn Mrs. Lovett, but she wouldn't hear an ill word against Mr. Todd. Finally, the day came in which his suspicions would be proven. After being locked in the bakehouse, he discovered the dead bodies that lined one of the alcoves. Putting one and two together, he came to a disturbing conclusion. Temporary insanity ensnared the senses. He was in a word, crazy. When the authorities came, they found him bloodied, standing over Mr. Todd's lifeless body. Though he muttered crazily, they threw him in Fogg's Asylum. Nearly a year later, Toby slowly regained his sanity, and escaped. Now, he's trying to convince anyone who will listen that he had been, all of this time, sane.

QUOTE
As the sun peeked up over the rooftops, work had already begun on Fleet Street. Throughout the long row of stores, shop owners were preparing relentlessly for the business day that lay before them. Eagerly greeting the morning, Toby set off into the kitchen. Already standing in front of the table with her back hunched over as she worked on the pie molds, Mrs. Lovett didn't even look up as he entered the room. Pursing his lips together tightly, the young boy hurried over to her side. Perhaps there would be a task of interest for him that morning. He'd give anything to escape the tedious work of cleaning up after the customers from the previous night.

Much to his surprise, she instructed him to bring Mr. Todd his breakfast. It wasn't often that he was allowed to go up there, not without Mrs. Lovett, that was. He didn't stay down in the kitchen long enough for her to change her mind though. This was an opportunity he wasn't going to pass up. Grinning from ear to ear, he picked up the tray she had set up for the barber and quickly, yet carefully, dashed out of the door. Once outside, he nodded to the passing townspeople as he slowly made his way up the stairs. Mrs. Lovett definitely wouldn't be pleased if he dropped the plate, and made a mess.

Reaching the top of the stairs, he balanced the platter in on one hand as he fumbled for the door knob. Pulling it open, he poked his head inside. "Mr. Todd? Sir? I-I brought breakfast up for you." When he didn't hear a response he moved further inside. The room was dusty, but that obviously didn't bother the customers as more and more came each day. "Mr. Todd? Mrs. Lovett fixed you up a nice breakfast of toast and jam. There's even a nice glass of ale for you."
