Behind a barred window, cracked concrete walls, and a fence of barbed wire, was a room full of people who could've been classified as insane. They shook and screamed pain, as a newly formed disease swept through their veins. It killed within hours, and was extremely contiguous. The human's world was crumbling, and they didn't know it. They didn't know what was causing it, they didn't know how to fight it, they didn't know what is was. "Stupid humans." Hissed a high, scratchy voice. It rattled out of the owner's throat like a fly being let out of a tin-can, and pricked with disuse. It laughed afterward, a chilling sound that resembled ice cracking more than actual laughter. Sitting on the windowsill, looking in on the to-be-dead humans, were two figures. One sitting straight up and rather large, the other crouching low to the concrete with the fur along his spine prickling. The one that was sitting looked much like a black lab, only his fur was longer and his ears were closer to his head. But of course, you couldn't see his fur pattern. Muddy brown eyes stared blankly into the window, but the black pupil held within glistened with both excitement and hate. His comrade, the crouching one, was also black. But this one was a cat, and what seemed to be an old one at that. This was the being who had spoken, amber fangs glinting in the light reflected off the raindrops that pelted the ground beside their shelter. His short fur clung to his sides, but his tail and spine with pricking. Large, red-tinted ears were listening to every sound, and black-streaked red eyes glared hungrily at the foolish mortals inside. "They've always been insignificant." Growled the dog, his voice sounding like gravel. It sounded brutish compared to the cat. Smart and strong. "Ah, tis true, soldier." The cat sighed, pulling himself into a sitting position next to the dog. "Our illness is working." The dog sniffed. "Of course. Their immune systems stood no chance. Yesterday's magic is never weak." The cat grinned, yellow, deadly fangs gleaming again. "Especially after they've locked it away for so long. The foolish barbarians should've known better than to try and contain it." The dog continued on the cat's track, his face still as expressionless as his grumbling voice. "We've lost so many friends in trying to let it live again. Dragons, unicorns, griffins..." The cat's voice dwindled off with a dramatic affect. Both creatures bowed their heads in respect for the fellow races gone by. Those noble ones who had brought themselves to the light to try and bring the magic back. Then the dog raised his head, lips curling back in a snarl. "But remember King Bled, once the magic is restored, the canines with slaughter all your followers." A human inside the building wheezed, then screamed, then dwindled away in dead. His chilling screams filled the night air, but it was drowned out by a much more chilling noise. The cat threw back his flame-tinged black head, bloody eyes closing in pleasure. Fangs shown deadly in the night, at any moment ready to plunge into the dog's flesh. His fur rippled as he cackled, the eerie screech flowing over the human's screams. It lasted long and hard, pounded on by the drilling rain. The dog only watched, as the feline laughed at both his threat and the death inside. Royalty of both bloods, yet none was to be shed that night. But how long until it was? Live to Kill The towering skeletons of decayed sky scrapers lined the light gray sky, their black points like spikes that could at any moment could impale any of the birds that chose to flap over the ruins. The raging 'disease' that had killed the humans off years ago had also taken to destroy all of their cities, so that only two intelligent species existed. At least, the ones who Yesterday's magic had had the mercy on to let them not fall into what humans called pet-hood. King Bled jumped down from one of the piles of concrete rubble, streaming shadows following in his graceful steps. The half-crumbled Statue of Liberty stood watch as he led his troops down the once crowded city streets. A look of bloodthirsty excitement was plastered on his face. He rounded the corner, soft pads silent as he came to a halt. As the cats came to form a huge mass of moving fur, he looked on with hatred at the already gathered forces of the canines. The dog he had sat next to on that windowsill sneered at him, tail flicking. This was King Rip, a large German shepherd-like dog, with as much brain as muscle. This was a big territory, one each of the armies wanted. It was currently under the control of no one, and it was fated that the canines and felines were to meet. "Your little flea-bags will be nothing against my soldiers." Sneered Bled, his red eyes narrowing. "Look canines, the scrap of fur's trying to insult us." Rip laughed, looking over his shoulders at his cackling squadron. Bled hissed, along with the rest of the cats, who then swarmed forward like hungry ants. The dogs met them with bared fangs, easily throwing numerable cats into the air, only to fall back into their gaping jaws, and being torn to shreds. But the sheer numbers of the felines made up for their diminutive size, and their claws scored many victories. It was like this that the years swept on, and in turn each king was brought to his death, soon to replaced by another. Though Bled and Rip are always the most respected, not many had time to mourn for their deaths, for this first war lasted decades, if not centuries. And it is still going on today, but it is quiet for now. Oh so quiet. Silent, even. Overview Cats and dogs are seen by use, now, as creatures of limited intelligence and pets. But, it is only because of our destructive nature do they seem that way. In the days of old, all creatures possessed a magic now called 'Yesterday's magic' which allowed them intelligent thinking, the knowledge of peace, and a treaty between all species (which, of course, didn't interfere with the predator/prey relationship). But, of course, when man came, we tore down the forests, layed roads over the praries, and bore holes in the mountains. This trapped the magic, driving it to almost nonexistance. Creatures became stupid, and we humans exploited this. But some creatures were able to regain the magic, but these creatures were slaughtered. These creatures were those we consider myths, and as they fought the humans in various ways to try and get them to become at peace with the Earth, and therefore release the magic again, they were wiped out. Eventually, every one of those creatures were exterminated from the Earth. Only a two species of creatures who had retained the magic were left, the domestic felines and canines, and they were smart enough to stay in hiding. Until many years after the time we live in. Two animals, King Bled (the cat) and King Rip (the dog), found a source of greater magic. Only, this magic had been poisoned by the human's violence and cruelty. This corrupted their once pure minds, believing that the only way to get back Yesterday's magic was through pure violence and slaughter. In this way, they corrupted further the minds of the rest of the species and brought the Plague upon the humans and the world, turning it into a war-torn planet. Only the dogs and the cats were touched when the magic, which had by now been corrupted beyond repair, came back with full power of the animals. And now, there is little hope of the Earth ever being a peaceful place. The world's continants have drifted a bit, and land bridges bring them all together. The pure Yesterday's magic, that of peace and knowledge, has yet to come out of its true hiding place, though a few young ones, known as Witches or Wizards, are said to be born with it in their hearts. But the only way they can ever bring it out is if they aren't tainted by the unpure magic, which is all around them. This world is a dark and dangerous place, where your best friend may have a dagger in your chest before you know what was happening. Earth lies in ruins, just barely able to support the life that is there. And the tainted Yesterday magic prevents it from healing itself. Only the places with their own malevolent (or the opposite in some rare cases) aura were saved from the Plague. These include the haunted, the disturbed, and basically the paranormal. And of course, these spirits can be human, and any human is probably out for revenge against the creatures who brought their end. Dare you step into this land of war, magic, and ghosts?
