Title: Xenoblade Discussion
Description: *No SPOILERS please

HCBailly - April 6, 2012 03:49 PM (GMT)
This topic is for general discussion of Xenoblade.

I will not be discussing my personal experience with the game here, as I will be creating my own private topic for that later, when I start playing. I welcome everyone to share their experience with the game here. While I would ask that you do not post spoilers, I would encourage you to discuss the plot of the game in a general way.

Have fun!

Nosgard - April 6, 2012 03:51 PM (GMT)
i'll start this off wiff a friendly warning. The more you hype something, the harder it is to meet the expectations for everyone else. This means you dsilink.

Captain Planet - April 6, 2012 03:53 PM (GMT)
hope you all enjoy the game! :)

that said HC are you sticking with delaying your starting of Xenoblade or have you come to your senses? :D

HCBailly - April 6, 2012 03:56 PM (GMT)
I have picked up my copy, but have yet to decide when to play it. I'll probably make it into a nice coaster for a few months. :D

The way you guys were hyping it, I was expecting there to be a huge line outside the store, like a Midnight Madness early release sort of thing.

Deraj626 - April 6, 2012 03:56 PM (GMT)
I want Monday to come so I can start. :D
But I don't want Monday to come because it's my last day of Spring Break. :(
I guess time will just come and go.

Big_Isaac - April 6, 2012 04:06 PM (GMT)
I'm in an evil mood, so I'll spoil the whole plot for everyone. 'cause that's how I role
ready?

yeah. take that. now you're sorry for not playing the game ASAP

Sacred Nym - April 6, 2012 04:15 PM (GMT)
So last night I saved after what I'm assuming is the "early game plot-twist". I have two things to say.

1. Didn't see that one coming.

2. THIS. THIS is how you tell a story. Emotional music, Sympathetic characters, Decent writing, and EXCELLENT screenplay. That whole sequence of events was just amazing.

Can't say I'm greatly enthused on the sidequests though. Honestly it seems like Dragon Quest 9 all over again and to me that game is the absolute epitome of how not to do sidequests. The only saving grace is that so far it hasn't been giving obnoxious requirements. Still, I am very much enjoying the game so far.

Good, good.... we need more testimony to make HC play it RIGHT NOW. :P

EDIT: also get used to the screenplay. I said earlier and I'll say it again; I really cant think of many if any games that do cutscenes as well as Xenoblade. Normally in a game with cutscenes there might be 1 or 2 cutscenes that sync up perfectly with the music... Xenoblade it seems like every scene is, and it works SO well.

dullahan1 - April 6, 2012 04:53 PM (GMT)
Yeah... I'm probably gonna avoid this topic too. Getting the game today though, but I probably won't start on it today as I have other games to finish first, but I am excited about it. It better be as good as you guys said or I shall personally come over to where you all live and behead you all so you will all look like me.... except you won't have a dark steed.

JBlane - April 6, 2012 04:56 PM (GMT)
I'm going to get it shortly and most likely get started on it tonight.

EDIT: Got it.

Begaria - April 6, 2012 04:56 PM (GMT)
My second copy will be here in...*glances at utorrent*...four hours. My actual copy probably won't be here until early next week (/shakes fist at mailing system).

Captain Planet - April 6, 2012 05:04 PM (GMT)
ok last time (maybe) Ill hammer HC for not playing it

listen to the title screen music at least and see if that gets you excited... it sure did to me. I remember not going to play Xenoblade right away myself, but the title music to me just screamed 'this game is special' to me and I ultimately caved in and rest is history.

title screen music: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nNR-wsFAfiU

title screen itself (in HD no less): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DEOr95_ahIY

Also note to others, see to it that you check the options page and see if you prefer event scrolling on manual rather than the default automatic. I much prefer it on manual as it just feels more right.... I mean you wouldnt want a JRPG to automatically scroll text for you, amiright?

Big_Isaac - April 6, 2012 05:12 PM (GMT)
even the dialog in text boxes is being read to you by the VA, so I'd think it'd be really awkward to have the VA pause after every line, waiting for you to hit X
whatever floats your boat, I guess

HC, I gotta wonder... WHY are you not playing this yet?

HCBailly - April 6, 2012 05:13 PM (GMT)
Maybe I should load up the Wii menu screen with Xenoblade in the Wii, just to see how many people catch it. I'm shocked that I got less than 10 comments about having Skyward Sword in there.

Begaria - April 6, 2012 05:15 PM (GMT)
Actually, I think it's a good idea for HCBailly to NOT play Xenoblade Chronicles yet. He's doing a second test run on FFXII right now, and both games seem fairly similar in terms of gameplay. Playing two large, "open ended", JRPGs at the same time probably would drive him farther into insanity.

maybe its just so much time playing Valkyria Chronicles so Im used to it. I tried having it on for a while but tbh it goes a tad too fast that the VA doesnt seem believable. I mean, as long as you dont have ADHD, most human beings do indeed pause after every sentence for at least a little bit. maybe Im just a control freak and I want to be the one to initiate the next line of text. I am a slow reader (but in no way a bad reader) and hearing it by ear isnt enough for me.

HC has said his motivation is shattered when it comes to playing new games or doing anything but LPing in general. Shame, because I do think Xenoblade could boost his mood significantly. He also has said he feels entitled to finish PS4 first as well, which I guess is fair (would be more so if he was actually playing PS4, but meh).

HC, I gotta wonder... WHY are you not playing this yet?

There is still a possibility that I will play this soon. However, there are two things I'd like to finish before that.

1) Final Fantasy 12. I want to wrap up my testing for it as soon as possible, preferably before starting the DQ4 LP, though that probably won't happen. The problem is that I keep getting stuck, usually on trying to spawn certain rare monsters, so I tend to take breaks from it, frequently.

2) Phantasy Star 4. I'd like to try to finish it before starting Xenoblade for two reason. First, if I don't finish it now, I probably won't ever. Second, I'd like to keep it as a reserve option for my next main LP to follow FF12. However, I've gotten far more requests for Legend of Dragoon and Xenoblade, so those would take priority. OTOH, I'd imagine that Xenoblade would take a very long time to prepare for an LP, not to mention, for the community to create resources for me to draw upon for the game. It's not like there's an official strategy guide with every sidequest listed in it. Also, Legend of Dragoon is a very long game (4 discs?), and I've never played it before, so that may not be possible for me to prepare in time either. PS4 would be my fallback option.

there you go (don't dig too deep into this spreadsheet, since there are spoilers in it)

the game has been out for a long time in Japan and Europe, so there's a crapton of info available
not to mention you have Captain_Planet, Dsilink and me here, who played the game to death already and know a lot about it

there may be a ton of sidequest, but none of them are hard to figure out and for those who ARE hard to figure out, there's plenty of info

We get it. It's a great game. That man will get around to it, jeeze!

HCBailly - April 6, 2012 05:28 PM (GMT)
BigIsaac, as a fan of both Final Fantasy X and Xenoblade, which one would you prefer me to LP sooner? Ignore my bias against FFX, for the purpose of the question. I think I'd probably rather have a shorter game to follow FF12, so perhaps one of the two games would be best left for later. However, I'd imagine that FFX HD would have to be out by 2013.

Captain Planet - April 6, 2012 05:28 PM (GMT)
the strange thing about a Xenoblade LP is I dont think it be so much about completion, but rather more so about efficiency. That said, it would probably be a longer LP to test for than FF12, but not as hard, as theres no BS spawn stuff or 'you need a walkthrough to even know this even exists' kind of thing.

Xenoblade
I'll go as far as to say it's the superior game even though I give X a 10/10, too

it's newer, a non-SquareEnix game and you get a ton of requests for it. also, it's that type of game that benefits a lot from over-analyzing and optimizing. much more so than FFX

I was in a much better mood and far more optimistic, at the time. Today, my emotional stability is quite shattered, despite being physically healthier. I'll probably talk about it more when I've fully recovered. I just don't like to vent about my personal problems here. Oh, I know I do, but I don't talk about what's really going on in my life. You only see the results of what's going on.

yaya I know which is why earlier i said 'motivation shattered' and 'different circumstances'. dont worry about it. as Ive said though, I was in a similar circumstance and Xenoblade helped me a lot in terms of mood, but take that as you will.

Pretty much this.

From what I've seen, it seems like it's enjoyable, but I'm not getting the holy grail of gaming out of it.

But whatever

As for your plans HC, do whatever gives you enjoyment. When I rec'd you Phantasy Star 4, I rec'd it because I figured you'd enjoy it, given your tastes. I didn't even consider a possible LP of it, I just wanted to rec you something I knew you'd probably enjoy (And it seems like you do, from what I gathered from the other topic).

Captain Planet - April 6, 2012 06:23 PM (GMT)
And I dont see PS4 as the holy grail, but whatever. Everyone has their own tastes and preferences. I recommend Xenoblade to HC for the same reason you recommend him PS4; Its something, based on his tastes, that he will probably strongly enjoy. Theres a reason that 3-4 people here hype it up as much as they do; they like it.

Also HC, dont watch the prologue if you really dont want to commit to Xenoblade. Honestly, the opening cutscene (prologue of the game) will only make you want to play it more.

gooooooooood

come on, Captain and Link, we almost have him!

HC, at least start the game, play for an hour or two and see if you can put it back down.
there's 2 possibilities
1) it raises your spirits enough that you keep playing (99% chance right there)
2) you can put it down and tear into it at a later time
either way, you only wasted 1-2 hours finding out

also, theme of the first area in XB

remember how much you love radiant historia? :)
how about being reminded of RH in every normal battle in the first half of xenoblade:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUKzFYUGbg0

also did i mention that 3 seconds into the game and you already get tanking as part of your main strategy? :D (no seriously after the opening intro you get tanking and it's not minor)

It's difficult, I know. I bought New Super Mario Bros. a few weks back and I've been resisting the urge to play it until I finish exams on April 25th (ostensibly because playing video games takes up too much time...which I just spend here anyway :P).

But yeah, RESIST IT! If it's as awesome as everyone says, then you'll be completely hooked on it, and you'll never get around to finishing your test run of FFXII or PSIV. Speaking of FFXII, that's another reason. Apparently the two games are quite similar, and since you're playing FFXII right now, you'll probably need a buffer in-between that's not like either game. That's where PSIV comes in handy.

Perhaps Xenoblade can act as a motivator for you to finish FFXII and PSIV. :P

Begaria - April 6, 2012 08:01 PM (GMT)
Sweet, my download is ready in about 45 minutes. I'm going to do some testing on the Dolphin and see how well the can be played on my computer. Hell, if it works well, I might not even open my copy of Xenoblade. I was contemplating going through the process of ripping my own copy, but sadly I do not have a compatible DVD burner, nor do I have any inclination of modding my Wii.
