Title: StarTropics LP Discussion
HCBailly - April 4, 2012 12:19 AM (GMT)
This topic is for discussing my LP of the Nintendo Wii version of StarTropics.
I decided to start this LP to bridge the gap between finishing Final Fantasy 4 and starting The Interlude, even though I've done no test runs. I'm quite familiar with the game, and I've been holding off on this one for long enough.
Enjoy!

Definitely a suprise to me. How long will this last? As long as ff4 or longer?
Konrad - April 4, 2012 12:22 AM (GMT)
It's not a long game if you know what you're doing. They'll probably end around the same time.
HCBailly - April 4, 2012 12:22 AM (GMT)
It might last slightly longer than when I finish FF4, but it's a relatively short game.
VShalak - April 4, 2012 12:24 AM (GMT)
I think you overdid it a bit on the vertical screen stretching. Were you trying to imitate an 8:7 resolution on the video like an NES emulator would display?
JBlane - April 4, 2012 12:27 AM (GMT)
Another game I haven't played in my childhood. Looks like a fun Zelda clone.
Deraj626 - April 4, 2012 12:28 AM (GMT)
It looked fine to me. When you said "spoiler alert, you get more hearts" were you tring to sound like DeceasedCrab? You kind of did to me.

Yes, that was the idea.
This LP will probably be a good example of why I don't watch many other LPers. I'm probably going to inadvertently steal a lot of the comments from Deceased Crab's LP, as it was the first one that I ever watched, and was a great inspiration to me.
Steven - April 4, 2012 12:38 AM (GMT)
I'm most suprised by how you're gonna do this mostly from memory if I'm guessing correctly?
VShalak - April 4, 2012 12:38 AM (GMT)
I say stick with the 4:3 resolution. It makes things look more... "natural".
Pyroguy42 - April 4, 2012 12:38 AM (GMT)
Looks like I've found a reason to actually beat this game.
Can I expect an "Okey dokey Dr. Jones!" somewhere in this LP or do you hate Shortround?
Also, are you aware of how to access the the code you can only found by getting the letter wet in the Wii version or have you just memorized the code by now?
rosafan_84pi - April 4, 2012 12:38 AM (GMT)
Yeah, i haven't played this either. So it will very interesting as well!!
Hukos - April 4, 2012 12:39 AM (GMT)
I don't think people will care that you reference DC as long as its obvious that you're referencing him and not claiming it as your own joke.

I'm aware of how the letter functions in the Wii version, and it is one of the big reasons why I wanted to LP this version. Notice that I didn't scroll further down on the letter, so as to avoid spoiling that event.
Full 4:3 resolution looks REALLY stretched to me. Although, 8:7 might be a little too narrow. I could stretch it out a little more.

How funny, DC's Startropics LP is the first LP I can ever recall really watching. Don't drink any coconut milk HC and hope you aren't putting bananas in your ears by the end of the LP. =)

I'm reminded of something I heard from MST3K (I think). I'll paraphrase here, as I don't remember the quote at all, but here's the general meaning of it. "If you're making a movie, don't tell your audience what else they COULD be watching, especially if it's a much better movie." IIRC, it was in reference to a really bad movie showing clips of Casablanca in it.
Not that I don't want to promote DC, as he was one of my early inspirations. However, as I've grown, I've tried to distance myself from his mannerisms, in an attempt to create my own. I also don't want to look like I'm ripping him off any more than I already have in my other LPs.

You dip your Wii in water, right?
Hukos - April 4, 2012 12:53 AM (GMT)
Likewise, there's a quote an old friend of mine says "Everyone rips everyone else off." There's not that much out there that's original out there. Even the most influential people probably ripped someone else's material off, and those people ripped off a previous generation, and so on and so forth. So its not a huge deal, least not to me.
That being said, I can understand wanting to distance yourself, but I don't really see it as a huge deal myself. Then again, one of my favorite commentary groups ever, BSC (Who one member posts here ;) ), are admitted rip-off artists of HFC, so go figure.
Pyroguy42 - April 4, 2012 12:55 AM (GMT)
Yeah, totally. Just take your Wii, dump it in your bath tub, scrub it for about six minutes, wash it's hair. You'll really need to dig in with a luffah to get those numbers to show. Plug it back in, dodge some sparks and survive a good 500 watt jolt and badabing badoom.
Deraj626 - April 4, 2012 01:20 AM (GMT)
And then you'll become a mad scientist. ;)

HC most people do remember rob because they put him in Super Smash Brothers Brawl.

Regarding your comment on how everyone in your neighborhood was staying home on Monday HCBailly, I thought it was because it was Pulaski Day and your neighborhood had a lot of Polish-Americans. But then I checked it on Wikipedia and Pulaski Day is the first Monday in March, not April. Oh well.

I'm disappointed at the lack of one reference...

Yeah, I'll have to rewatch the Indiana Jones movies. Although, I haven't seen the fourth one. I heard it was pretty good, surprisingly.

I liked it myself, but actually, a lot of people didn't (infamously including Trey Parker and Matt Stone).
...I get the feeling we've just opened up a whole new can of worms with this topic.

It actually is a good movie...until the end, where it's batshit insane.
Also, this man speaks the truth.

Konrad - April 4, 2012 02:28 AM (GMT)
Oh man, you're missing out. This game has ISLAND COURAGE in it.

It's inferior to the older ones, but still a good "popcorn muncher" movie.
Although there is this one scene involving a lead-lined refrigerator....

Wait, why did you want to get 5 stars? Do you get some kind of bonus that you can take to the next dungeon?

5 stars = 1 heart, which I could have used, at the time.

Ah, I thought that might have been the case...
Hm, it still worked out though. You can't take the flares or potions along with you and you won! Would you keep that heart container for the next area?

No, everything gets reset between chapters.

If you have more than 3 lives don't you keep them? I know if you have less it goes back to 3 when starting a new chapter.
HCBailly - April 4, 2012 03:56 AM (GMT)
I forget about lives resetting or not. It's been so long since I actually paid attention to them. :P
Speyeker - April 4, 2012 03:58 AM (GMT)
Do you have any plans to LP the sequel?
HCBailly - April 4, 2012 04:01 AM (GMT)
No, I have no interest in the sequel.
mrx88 - April 4, 2012 04:05 AM (GMT)
I really don't get why people don't like Startropics 2. I enjoyed it as much as the first game.
Fun fact: In NA, Startropics 1 was the first Virtual Console game released in 2008 will the sequel was the last one in the same year.
