Title: My Skyrim Experience
Description: *No SPOILERS please

HCBailly - November 12, 2011 07:10 PM (GMT)
This topic is for discussing my experience with The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. I am playing the PC version of the game.

I decided to buy Skyrim yesterday. A partial motivation was to test out how my new computer would handle it. Also, I wanted to try stretching my interests. I thought about getting Skyward Sword, but the controls look like they would really put me off.

The graphics are obviously amazing in Skyrim. My computer seems to be able to handle running it perfectly with no technical issues. My main concern is the potential for overheating, though my case has 5 fans on it, in addition to the fans on the processor and graphics card. I hope that's enough. It does seem a little warm. I wonder if I should limit my playtime to avoid overheating?

I made it to the first town. So far, it appears to be a standard western RPG, though I am pleased with the amount of direction they are giving, though that could just be the tutorial portion of the game. The voice acting seems good. I'm not sure what my role is at this point. Right now, I'm just following the quest objectives. I'm pretty overwhelmed by the instruction manual, so I'm just trying to ease myself into the game. Hopefully, as I play more, the manual will make more sense to me.

I may or may not finish the game, but I do want to put some serious time into it, given the money I put into it and my computer.

Thanks for the discussion.

WHAT?!

i feel now like im the last person on the internet who didn't get it yet :( (though i know for a fact many people didn't but still)

i heard on many reviews saying that the motion controls were done so good some people had a hard time going back to a normal controller
of course it's not for everyone but still

If you've seen any of my posts in the off topic forum, I'm sure you noticed I mention some minor issues people seem to be having and some ways to fix them. If something else seems wrong in terms of technical issues I'd be happy to try to help.

And yeah, one thing about Oblivion and Skyrim now is when you're given a quest, they tell you exactly where to go, which cuts down on the wandering around thing if you don't like to do that.

Oh, and if you absolutely hate using a keyboard and mouse, you can plug an xbox controller into a USB port (no third party thing required) and play the game on the computer using a controller. Assuming you know someone you can borrow one from or something.

This is probably one of the most extreme jumps I can think of from a JRPG, so hopefully you enjoy it.

I don't have Skyrim and have no plans to get it.

Hopefully HC will enjoy this game and open him up to more Western RPGs and maybe roundabout him to more jRPGs like Persona.

Actually using MotionJoy http://www.motioninjoy.com/blog/xbox-360-controller-emulator
You can have a PS3 controller emulate a 360 one

If you think your graphics card can handle it (I can't recall which one you have) you might be interested in some of the tweaks the community has come up with so far.

I'm currently installing Skyrim, myself. I'm not really all that interested, but it'll be pretty sweet anyway, I imagine. It's really just to have something to do until next week.

if you want some good dungeon exploring early, theres a small mine between the first town and those 3 stone things (forgot what they are called), and a quest to go into a much larger one taken by the shopkeeper.

I am very curious as to how people like this game. I'm gonna get Skyward Sword 1st but if I hear a lot of good things from people about Skyrim I may pick it up early next year in January myself.

No, I mean that I hope this will allow him to try and enjoy more Western RPGs...and through this, because he'll have a more open mindset, try jRPGs that haven't sounded very great in his eyes, like Persona and the like.

Im pretty sure he hasnt tried the persona series as he would not enjoy a game filled with angsty teenagers and jpop. he learned that very quick with the world ends with you.

While yes he is being more open minded, the elder scrolls is a series he SHOULD like given the setting and all. only thing holding him back is the gameplay and gamestyle.

The game is very nice except for one problem, and it's a pretty annoying problem.

Bethesda has already started to try to make fixes, but it is not enough. The user interface for this game was CLEARLY designed for consoles, and Bethesda made absolutely no effort to make it PC friendly. Modders are already trying to figure out how to fix stuff when the program isn't even out yet. You're better off playing this with a controller hooked up to your PC until it's fixed. Hotkeying things in this game is kind of a mess because of the fact it likes to reset things whenever you do something with the F key as an example.

It doesn't make the game unplayable but it's really kind of annoying, and it's not just people complaining on message boards. Game journalists and blogs are bringing it up too, and a google search shows it's all over various websites.

Not to be negative, the actual game seems extremely nice and an improvement over Oblivion in every way. If they can fix some interface issues it will be even better.

IcarusMJ12 - November 12, 2011 09:47 PM (GMT)
I really do love what they've done with casting spells though. I almost always play magic users after an obligatory Thief and from what little I've played it looks very enjoyable.

The teenagers aren't really angsty, at least in my opinion.

To be perfectly honest... If you wanted to cut your teeth on The Elder Scrolls, HC, your best bet would be Daggerfall, which is now provided for free. I think they even bundle it with DOSBox, but I could be mistaken.

I'll get it eventually. Super Mario 3D Land and Skyward Sword are more of a priority for me at the moment, though.

Let me know how Mario 3D Land is. I've been thinking about getting a 3DS. I heard they got a new Mario Kart game coming out too that might interest me. How bizarre that non-RPGs would influence me to buy a portable.

I've seen some Japanese gameplay of it and it seems sorta like a cross between the New Super Mario Bros. games and the Galaxy games. Very cool.

Speaking of the 3DS, the 3DS version of Sonic Generations has yet to come out, but the 360/PS3 version is getting solid reviews. Nothing on the level of Skyward Sword, but this is a franchise that doesn't have the best reputation as of late, so that's worth considering.

I wonder how the 3DS version will fare, though it's being developed by Dimps, and not Sega. That could either be a good or a bad thing, depending on the circumstances.

I've seen videos and it looks solid, obviously won't be on the level of the console graphics-wise, but it looks good.

The only thing I think can hurt it is bad controls, which from the videos the controls seemed good enough.

From the gameplay trailer it seems solid (Did I mention that I love the bass presence in mushroom hill? I do.), but this is a Sonic game and if Sonic 06 taught me anything, it's to never hold your breath when it comes to this series. I do love the return of the Sonic Heroes special stages though <3

And I read it exactly in your voice. I thought you'd like to know some of the things you say are actually planted into people's brain.

If you purchase at the time you said you would, you should be fine. The issue isn't bugs so much as some strange design choices that are already being fixed with mods even now.

If you are getting it on a console, that won't matter because the control scheme is extremely console friendly.

Got it so I will wait till around January to get Skyrim on PC (Once I get the chance to clear my game backlog).

And some HcBailly-isms are engraved in my head as well (Especially GAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMEEE!)

well, I for one like the UI, but thats generally because Im a console gamer. I do do not like how you cant click your options. Like seriously? Also I didnt play too much of my PC version, but are their hotkeys, or are you forced to use the favorites menu?

I too like how they did this duel wielding. Shame, though, as I wanted to use greatswords exclusively, but I have to use 1 handed swords sometimes if i decide to use some spells.

There are hotkeys. You have to open your favorites menu, highlight whatever you want, and then from there you push 1-8 to put it on a key (or whatever console players do). I guess a better word for what I was going for was less UI and just general things. One weird thing is Bethesda made it so some keys you cannot switch around on your keybind menu for some god forsaken reason. For example if you put something on the F, which you push to pull up the favorite menu, you cannot pull up your favorites again because it refuses to let you do that unless it's on the F. You can't just make it so another key pulls up favorites. This mod is starting to get rid of those "Hard coded" things as well as make things like closing books and exiting lockpicks feel more like the older games and not as jerky.

I'm a couple of hours in. Haven't encountered a single freeze/crash/bug yet. Of course that'll change when my save file gets bigger and bigger.
