Title: Aug-Sept 2011 Online Gaming Discussion
Description: *Includes MMOs or other online games

HCBailly - August 15, 2011 04:46 PM (GMT)
This topic is for discussing online gaming. Since quitting World of Warcraft, I feel that this topic would be best for discussing other potential online games I may want to play, and for you guys too. While initially intended for MMORPGs, I figured the topic should include discussion of any non-MMO social game, like Diablo 3. If it become popular enough, I may create a general forum for various online gaming topics.

For those unaware, I quit World of Warcraft, due to recent latency issues with the game. The game and the social interaction were great, but I can't play a game with 500 ms latency. I don't think this is due to my ISP, because every test I've done shows that I'm only having the issue with World of Warcraft, and I never disconnect while doing anything else online.

As such, I'm looking for a replacement addiction... I mean, social outlet. At the top of my list are Rift, Guild Wars 2, and Diablo 3. Rift is out now, and there's no release date set for GW2 or D3 yet, so I'm seriously considering the free trial of Rift right now. I've heard good things about Guild Wars 2, and being free of subscriptions is a big motivation. Speaking of which, is Rift subscription-based? Subscriptions aren't a deal-breaker for me, but not having to pay one is a very nice bonus. My primary interest in Diablo 3 is my brother, who is as much of a Blizzard fanboy as I am of Square-Enix.

Thanks for the discussion.

Begaria - August 15, 2011 04:49 PM (GMT)
Yeah, Rift has a subscription:

Too bad I'm not really into the multiplayer scene right now. Would love to play some games with you, HCBailly.

Nosgard - August 15, 2011 04:53 PM (GMT)
i'm looking forward to diablo 3 myself, in part BECAUSE its not subscription based, but rift sadly does require a subscription to play, and I hear in gameplay its very similar to WoW, but thats heresay, couldn't tell yah first hand.

HCBailly - August 15, 2011 04:56 PM (GMT)
Diablo 3 is lowest on my short consideration list, in part because of the problem I had with WoW. Not so much because I have a grudge against Blizzard (okay, maybe a little). More so because they're all run on battle.net and I'd be concerned that I would run into the same problems.

Nosgard - August 15, 2011 05:02 PM (GMT)
hmm, thats a valid point, but I don't think (no promises here!) that it would be as bad, while its still battle.net, the games are run off a host PC, not off a blizzard server. The games consist of 8 players tops, proably less come to think of it, so the strain on the PC shouldn't be nearly as bad. of course, if Theirs just some horrible battle.net thing causing you massive latency and it wasn't a server-issue than it could still persist. :/

HCBailly - August 15, 2011 05:03 PM (GMT)
Theoretically, can you talk to friends playing other Blizzard games via Real ID? I'm guessing that's how it works.

HighPriestFuneral - August 15, 2011 05:08 PM (GMT)
Having played Rift myself, it's clearly very similar to WoW in the end, sure they give each class a fair amount more freedom in role, but cookie-cutter builds abound, and some of the abilities could be considered nigh-useless, though this was a couple of months ago. The random rifts opening and moving to close them is pretty fun though, it lends some different from Do Quest - Get Reward - Rinse/Repeat forever and anon.

A game I've seen that seems pretty good is the Star Wars MMO, I'm not that big into Star Wars, but I enjoyed it pretty well for the little bit I played of it.

There's also a new game coming out called Tera which apparently is planned to have a Player run government and economy which seems like a fairly interesting experiment to say the least.

There's also Guild Wars 2 coming out, which having played the first one, this one seems to be an improvement in all ways.

Desdenova - August 15, 2011 05:08 PM (GMT)
With real id you can talk to people who play SC2 and in the future D3 supposedly.

Nosgard - August 15, 2011 05:08 PM (GMT)
yes, you can. I've had conversations with people in SC2 while playing WoW. That service should work for Diablo 3 as well. As long as your Real ID friends and not just "in-game" friends of one specific game. It really is an increadible feature, I wish more companies did it than just blizzard. Wouldn't it be nice playing saaay, Dragon Age and talking to your buddy down the street playing Mass Effect? :)

Fun fact: The founders of Arenanet, who are in charge of GW2, are former employees of Blizzard, and all had a large part in creating Warcraft, Starcraft, and Diablo 1 and 2. They were also a big part in making the original Battle.net.

Yes, it's called Steam. Or Xfire.

Edit: While I'm on the subject (and Dsilink brought up Portal 2 below), would there be any interest in creating a Steam group for the forum?

Dsilink - August 15, 2011 05:19 PM (GMT)
if this is also a topic for online two person games then let me say again that i still am dying to play the portal 2 co-op mode but i don't know anyone who plays

Nosgard - August 15, 2011 05:28 PM (GMT)
i'd join a Kingdom of HC bailly steam group. so theirs at least a tiny bit of interest :)

Begaria - August 15, 2011 05:35 PM (GMT)
I've got Portal 2, Dsilink. I haven't finished the co-op completely, my friend and I haven't gotten through the final area. I'd join a HCBailly Steam group. I just shortened up my Steams friend list so it'd be good to have people I can actually connect with on there.

Dsilink - August 15, 2011 05:42 PM (GMT)
.......... i didn't really think that post would start a steam group but ok
i'll try to make it in a few minutes from now

EDIT: can some one else make it because i have no clue what half of the things there mean?

Konrad - August 15, 2011 05:54 PM (GMT)
I'd be interested if I could actually make an account.

Dsilink - August 15, 2011 06:24 PM (GMT)
if we are making a steam group should it be a public or a private group?
i vote for public

--------------------

what the hell is an abbreviation ?
i saw it when i tried to make the group and steam poorly explained it

Dsilink - August 15, 2011 08:47 PM (GMT)
sorry for double posting

i lied and tried again to make the group
im 3 seconds from finishing it

name: Kingdom of HCBailly
abbreviation: Kin... of HC
private group

is this ok with everyone or do you want me to change something?

Zarggg - August 15, 2011 08:56 PM (GMT)
For the abbreviation, wouldn't "KoHCB" make more sense?

Dsilink - August 15, 2011 08:59 PM (GMT)

Hukos - August 15, 2011 09:03 PM (GMT)
Steam runs insanely slow on my computer, but this thing is a hunk of junk so that shouldn't be a surprise.

Zarggg - August 15, 2011 09:21 PM (GMT)
You should be able to find my account by searching my forum username. If not, I'll change it around.

VShalak - August 15, 2011 09:21 PM (GMT)
Send Vitaliy42 an invite, please ;)

So I'll be taking over invite duties until we can get someone more competent with steam to do it
.
If you wish to be invited please post a link to your Steam profile page so we don't have to search and invite the wrong person
Thank you all

HCBailly - August 15, 2011 10:46 PM (GMT)
For those who are playing it, what is Rift like? Particularly, compared to WoW, since that's my primary MMO experience. From the trailer on their website, it doesn't sound like my cup of tea. The content sounds too dynamic. If I understand correctly, every now and then, these Rifts will open up and a whole zone is thrown into chaos, where you have to drop whatever it is you were doing and kill the bad guy. That sounds REALLY stupid. If I were to prefer open-ended content, I would want to be able to proceed at my own pace, not have the game tell me when I have to do something.

Begaria - August 15, 2011 10:54 PM (GMT)
For whatever reason Fang, I can't seem to link my steam community page. I don't know why.

However, if you search for armswild then you'll find me. I'm the only one with that handle.

Taku - August 15, 2011 11:04 PM (GMT)
My account name is takureira

Since I haven't used Steam much but probably will more in the future, I don't know how to link a page from Steam so explanation will be helpful.

Draguscloud - August 15, 2011 11:15 PM (GMT)
Send me an group invite

http://steamcommunity.com/id/draguscloud

Taku: if you right click on the community page one of the options is copy url.

Fangfanboy - August 15, 2011 11:18 PM (GMT)
Dsilink set it Private and I've no clue how to work it
So to invite you in the group you'll get a friend invite from me
You can remove me after your in the group if you want
.
Sure right after I say that I figure it out
.
Taku I can't seem to find you
.
Does anyone have a good avatar for the Group

arizona11 - August 15, 2011 11:26 PM (GMT)
Finally my kind of topic. OOOOOOOOOk so there is cardfight vanguard for those who like it. There is also tf2 if anyone plays it. And if any of you guys play forsaken world thats also pretty fun up to now. Terraria is still fun somehow unlike a certain other game =P
