I can see this LP will be great, but so many bugs just at the first episode?
man...

No "Remember that for later, viewers" on the Captain's Cap? :P

That's a bit too long for later, considering when Captain Mac does come in. Nobody's really going to remember that.
Here's a little extended version of a Shrine of Light song that I extended, so you can enjoy.

Tiana Sidhe - April 11, 2011 08:31 PM (GMT)
It's been too long since I last played this game. Good memories~ :P
mastermusicalgamer99 - April 11, 2011 08:31 PM (GMT)
Ah, the sweet sound of nostalgia, this game was the first RPG I ever played, and to this day it is one of my favourites of all time, kickass soundtrack, simplicity at it's greatest and i do not care about the bugs
Dracolix - April 11, 2011 09:32 PM (GMT)
This has been somewhat my most awaited game. Some other Square games also, but seeing how HC does this game is going to be fun. I got into this game actually after 6, given I never really known of emulators back then.
Chrono Trigger was just my favorite, when I had the actual cartridge of course. This came pretty close but yes it's short, too short I found but had some interesting quirks. Guess it's being how I played so much of each game, and tried to more or less tried to be faithful without breaking it. Such as in 6 with the obvious flaws in it, I actually did without those broken strategies.
Seeing this game it's going to be interesting, to see really what I missed compared to so many others. Which is what's had my attention all the time, awaiting this LP was well worth it I find.

Kato86 - April 11, 2011 10:21 PM (GMT)
Yep, also looking forward to this a lot. Nice game, with the potential to be really, really great. Kind of sad they never did something alike later. (I guess because of all the criticism which I really don't get except for the difficulty, maybe) Well, I guess Lufia II picked up some of the games ideas... Still, they really should have made a longer version with some minor improvements and it'd be really awesome. So it's still going to be a fun ride and I hope HC will have enough time to not make us wait too long between episodes.
Here goes to the start of a great LP! Cheers. (imagine a drinking smiley here, thanks)

TheOtakuGeek - April 11, 2011 11:25 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I've been waiting for this for a while now! It will be interesting what the game and the gameplay is like (yeah, I've never played it, go figure). Also, either this is the first time I'd seen a mother concern for her child going out and fighting monsters, or I've haven't played enough RPGs (or I could be having a bad case of memory lost XD).
TheSSNintendo - April 12, 2011 01:49 AM (GMT)
I've always liked Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest, even if it seemed a little on the easy side. It's going to be even more fun with HCBailly LP'ing it.

SARCASM ALERT
Whoa! What the hell is this? Mystic Shit? When did you decide on LPing this assfest?
SERIOUS ALERT
Hooray! I love this game so much. It's just got that elegance in its simplicity that I can really appreciate.

Sadly, both Composers who worked on the music in this game really aren't doing video game music anymore, and haven't really for a decade. One is a part of a band that pays tribute to Queen, Queen Mania, so at least we can tell where that music went to :D
perspixx - April 12, 2011 06:07 AM (GMT)
Oh, huzzah... something to watch. DC's ActRaiser LP has been taking too long, so this will be required viewing for me. I didn't play FFMQ until after I finished with FF2... naturally, I was somewhat disappointed. That said, it does have its value and I look forward to this.
I wasn't aware of the Life spell causing death... but I did die at the first battle multiple times when I first got the game.
AO968 - April 12, 2011 06:37 AM (GMT)
This game doesn't really need any research beforehand. As long as you're aware of the Status bug (which I solved completely on my own, back in the day), you can pretty much guess what enemies are weak to what, especially when you get a spell shortly before or after you fight new enemies.
I usually stock up on Heal Potions before I leave the Level Tree area, I find those more important at the beginning of the game than the Cure Potions, given that I usually get poisoned a lot and I don't get the Heal Spell till later.
The manual came with a nice overworld map, I thought that was very nice. Too bad I can't find it anymore...
Trance715 - April 12, 2011 08:39 AM (GMT)
Awesome HC, love this game to peices!
iheartmovees - April 12, 2011 02:15 PM (GMT)
when i watched the 1st episode, i never knew about the start-select tip to check your CPU info, even after having and playing this game for 10+ years.
Begaria - April 12, 2011 04:25 PM (GMT)
When my son is around four or five years old, I'm totally going to hook him up with Mystic Quest to try and get him into the Final Fantasy series. I've been looking forward to this LP for awhile now.
geomatrx - April 12, 2011 05:05 PM (GMT)
I've been waiting for your LP of this.
Inn's are quite expensive in this game, so I always avoided them to use the money for the "ultimate item" in the game :)
Also, would you consider trying to use the BSNES emulator?
It's emulation is really accurate, the sound emulation is perfect, and the CPU usage has reduced from previous versions.

Too bad it's slower than an emulator that was popular in the 90s. :/
I have played a couple of games that only ran in BSNES, but I would never use it over ZSNES/9x personally.
mastermusicalgamer99 - April 12, 2011 06:29 PM (GMT)
While i remember, will you be keeping the second character AI controlled or will you manually control them in battle when you have them with you?
Nosgard - April 12, 2011 07:26 PM (GMT)
you know, I admit I was pretty young, maybe..geez close to 17 years ago I played this game? some crazy time like that..but even than it felt REALLY simple. I'm not...sure how much strategy is required to beat it..even beating it uhh "good" as Bailly does. I am curious to see however if my youth was simply making me oblivious to a more detailed battle formula than I think it has :D. i'll enjoy seeing this when its all over..in like a month, as I recall its very short >.>

You know, good question.
It's such in HC's character to do things that would completely pwn a game.
Having the character on auto made for some excellent last-minute saves. I suppose he'd switch between auto/manual, using dual 'cure' or 'life' on bosses that'd be hit by it.
Tiana Sidhe - April 12, 2011 10:13 PM (GMT)
I can remember getting stuck in a certain temple around mid-game, and being unable to figure out how to continue. I think it involves jumping at just the right moment. Pissed me off for the longest time until I worked out how to do it.
(Old Lady Mode) Back then, we didn't have your fancy internet LP videos to guide us along. We did it by trial and endless errors... AND WE LIKED IT! (end Old Lady Mode)
Dracolix - April 12, 2011 10:17 PM (GMT)
What really to me in this game kinda set it apart from others, was mainly the ability to restart a battle if you died at all. Sure it means you can't go back, and level grind as most players would possibly do. Not that you ever really need to grind, I've done a full game finish pretty fast before. I doubt anywhere near speed-run requirements, but heck it's more fun exploring anyways.
I actually skipped on various pieces of equipment, since I didn't know of their location and ended up finding them after I had the upgraded ones. Kinda hoped though for a possible remake, or something that would add upon this but nothing came through. Still found it a wonderful classic, even though it never really fit well in terms of along the others.
Guess being characters are not always around that long, that I overlooked the protection bug and all other things. I'm still wondering how well this will be, given how short the game really is in retrospect to the main series.
silverdragon - April 13, 2011 01:42 AM (GMT)
I heard the Final Fantasy Mystic Quest was made for Western gamers becuase the creators they thought aparently western games dont understand complex RPG's or something like that
I heard it from Davetheushers video on the game.

The hate stems from the fact that it is a really simplistic RPG. The music is kickass but the game itself is really simple. The lack of exploration in the outside world really hurts the game. Also it's very short. I used to dislike it but being bored and replaying it a bunch brings back memories of my older brother playing it. I remember him receiving the game for Christmas.

You haven't played it? That actually surprises me. But yeah, it's a fun little game--that's exactly it. Sure, it may be fairly simple and short, but who cares? It's not like it TRIES to be anything more and then ends up royally failing. It's almost painful to see that kind of phenomenon in a game.

So far this reminds me of FF: The Four Heroes of Light. Generic RPGs are fun!

I'd say even less. Took me 23 and I think HCBailly might only take a few more unless he's going to show of a lot of the battles. On the other hand, I wasted one or two episodes getting lost so he might even do it in three weeks.
edit: On he other hand, I mostly tried to go for the full 15 minutes most of the time. so if HC is going to do about 12 minutes episodes... 5/4.. yeah, thirty sounds about right. Sorry. Though, knowing HC he'll probably try to cliffhang us as often as possible so I don't really know how long the episodes will be.

HCBailly was basically my introduction to pre-PS1 era FF games. Never had any RPGs during the NES/SNES days, my first exposure was when I was almost done with elementary school
Insaneman22 - April 13, 2011 07:18 PM (GMT)
This is probably the first RPG i played. Nowadays people want more complex RPG's. At the time when it first came out it was a nice introduction to what an RPG should basically be. Sure the games easy and Life is an overpowered spell because it heals to full hp and removes status effects. The main nitpick to me would be besides the dungeons there is really no exploration. If you don't try to compare it to the newer RPG's you might actually enjoy it. Just take it as it's own game.
I remember my older brother renting the first Final Fantasy and also renting FF II for the Snes at the time. But watching HCBailly's LP was how i was introduced to 2, 3, and parts of 5 because I had played 5 but didn't enjoy it.
Rocket - April 13, 2011 08:25 PM (GMT)
I'm going to play along as new videos get uploaded. However I'm going to play the European version, "Mystic Quest Legend". Is there any significant differences between the two versions? (besides the title and the speed of course)
Schloss Ritter - April 13, 2011 09:08 PM (GMT)
People complain that the game is too easy, then abuse the Life spell to make it even easier? I never knew about that trick when I played, and I found the balance of difficulty to be just fine with all the ways enemies have of inflicting status ailments on your characters, especially disabling ones. If Life was designed as to cure all HP lost on a living character and heal all status ailments, then why do the Cure and Heal spells even exist? If Life was meant to instant KO everything including bosses, why do damage dealing spells even exist? Both these uses are nothing more than taking advantage of a likely coding oversight, and I consider it a cheap tactic or even outright cheating, just like exploiting Vanish+Doom in FF6.

People do complain the game is too easy but I've actually played easier games. Even though you can restart fights if you die, some enemies can be abusive with status ailments.
Still, people need to enjoy a game than complain about it.
