Edward Meine Raymer
»Raymer«
"Out there, no food or drink
How many days do you think you’d last
On your diamonds and your pearls?
I’m not a king, no, not a hero, not a fool
I'm not perfect, I'm flesh and bone
And I'm exactly what you need."

◊WEAKNESSES◊

    DISHONEST
Truth is a rare commodity in the Magician Court, but nonetheless it’s still treated as worthless…especially among people like Edward. He never tells the truth if he can help it, and because of his own dishonest ways he expects everyone else of lying to him as well. This is not exactly a weakness, more of an awful strength; he really is a fantastical liar, able to remember details of fibs told long ago in the past. But even the most gifted spinners will eventually get tangled up in their own webs, and it will be no different for Raymer.
    PREJUDICED
Edward was raised in an entirely Magician-dominated setting, and as a result did not escape having the typical Magician snobbery bred into him. He thinks Humans are little more than clods of dirt with legs, that the only good food is food worth its weight in gold, and that he is superior to everyone he meets until told otherwise. While slightly more versatile that other of his kind (see his dealings with the Illuminati) he is still nonetheless crippled by the belief that Invoria and a third of the people in it are worth less than himself.
    POWER-HUNGRY
There is nothing in the world that Edward desires more than power. Even if he controlled Invoria in its entirety, he would not be content. When it comes to ambition he lacks all restraint, and has resorted to things much worse than mere murder to keep it fed. He is not greedy, insofar as to be greedy is to desire money; Edward seeks to control everyone, everywhere, and be respected in turn. It is a blessing that he’s clever enough to hide his lust for power with charming smiles and pretty words; otherwise he’d have been driven off long ago.

◊STRENGTHS◊

    CLEVER
Obviously, it takes more than just luck to get away with leading a major resistance movement. In order to keep his secret hidden and his head on his shoulders, Edward has to be able to think in ways other men would never expect. Outsmarting people is something he excels at. But, even if and when his intellect draws blanks, his other ‘talents’ will make sure everything he wishes accomplished is accomplished.
    MAGNETIC
Nearly everyone—regardless of race—finds Edward charming. It’s not in the way he looks or even the way he talks; people just seem to need his good favor, and thrive on it like plants to water. He uses this natural charisma to achieve a majority of his treacherous exploits, but nonetheless is pleasantly surprised when popularity comes so easily to him. He has no fear of public speaking, and can stir huge amounts of people over to his side with just a few well-spoken words.
    LEADER
The people of Rutilius probably don’t even realize it, but Edward is close to being king as Soren himself. He is more respected in the Magician Court than the actual members of the royal family, and for good reason; he is completely faithful to the running of his country, and even though he has no official power he is still recognized as a great leader. He is rarely ever distracted from important affairs, and can make good decisions at the drop of a hat.

◊PHYSICAL APPEARANCE◊

    PLAY BY: James McAvoy
    EYE COLOR: Blue
    HAIR COLOR: Dark Brown
    HEIGHT: 5’10
    WEIGHT: 149 lbs.
    OVERALL APPEARANCE:

Standing next to tall and muscled Soren, Edward does not particularly look like leadership material. For a man, he is of just barely average height, though with his rigid posture it’s sometimes hard to tell. He has the kind of tongue that allows him to worm his way out of playing any sort of sports-related exercise, and so lacks any sort of distinguishing musculature. Small and whip-cord thin, some very few people have mistaken him for the illustrious thief Baptista Jack. It was a mistake they never made again.

Because he often has more pressing things to attend to than shaving, Ed can sometimes appear to be ‘scruffy’. His hair—and indeed, his occasional beard—is a sort of dark, dusky brown. He has a habit of running both hands through it when stressed (which, being in his position, is nearly constantly) and so it’s often in varying states of disarray. Unlike most politicians, he does not have a golem or manservant always on hand to make him look prim and perfect. He is not perfect, and by his appearance he obviously wishes everyone to know it.

Edward’s face is, while still handsome in its own right, likened more to a rat than an angel. He doesn’t care to expend the energy to magic it prettier, mostly because the people who care about physical appearances aren’t to sort of people whose favor he really wants. So, his chin may be a little too narrow. So, his nose may be a little too crooked. If he spent as much time worrying about his looks as he did Rutilius and his people, the dark circles under his eyes would be big as moons by now.

He dresses more somberly than most Magicians, though technically that isn’t saying much. All of the things he wears are made and re-made twice by Rutilius’ finest tailors before they even come close to his body. Suits, top-hats, gloves, loafers, ties, even cufflinks are made either of the finest material available or are treasured family heirlooms. For someone generally so unconcerned with physical appearances, he spends an alarming amount of time making sure his clothing looks nice on him.

◊PERSONALITY◊
    PERSONALITY:

For the most part, Edward tends to avoid those people with uncommon perceptiveness, and as such very little is known about his actual personality. He is known, around the Magician Court, to be a fascinating, charming young man full of potential and good cheer. Fascinating he might be, but his charm is absolutely consuming. Edward can convince anyone of anything if he puts enough time and thought into it. He isn’t beloved—and probably never will be, given the usual Magician snobbery—but nonetheless realizes the importance of staying on everyone’s good side. He’ll need everyone on his side when his day comes.

He does not have a temper—if he does, it is an extraordinarily slow-burning one—and treats every complication in his plans with a sort of cool, raised-brow annoyance. He tries especially hard not to put too much trust on any one person, which can be difficult when you’re the ringleader in a band of traitors. He lies to so many people, and so often, that he automatically expects everyone of being equally as dishonest as himself. Not even his much-loved sister Gretchen and his almost-but-not-quite-fiancée Lenore are safe from his suspicion.

He can laugh and be charming when the time calls for it, but really he is much more at home plotting. Whether to plot be what to have for breakfast or how to have his best friend murdered, Edward always feels better with a plan in his pocket. Impulsiveness is not his style at all, which is why he usually fails so completely at sports. The only instance which he deems appropriate for spontaneity is love-making…and sometimes not even then. As previously stated, Edward is wary of even the most delicate of flowers. Being stabbed in the back by a lover would not be acceptable, especially when he’s so very close to the throne.

Edward is fairly passive when it comes to races, for a Magician. The only race that he truly and completely cannot stand is humans, which he views as bags of dirt with legs. All others—from Sirens to Elves to other Magicians—are fairly equal to him. Every sentient being has the capacity to do him harm, correct? And so, in order to be completely safe, he must suspect them all equally.

The only thing Edward Raymer trusts completely? Chocolate pudding. It will never harm him.

◊ HISTORY ◊
    FAMILY:
Lord Leon Raymer / Father / Nobleman / DECEASED
    Lady Iris Raymer / Mother / Noblewoman / 54
    Gretchen Raymer / Sister / Noblewoman / 25
    Johanna Raymer / Sister / Noblewoman / 20
    Heinrich Raymer / Brother / Nobleman / 18

    BIOGRAPHY:

Edward Meine Raymer was born the oldest of four children. His parents were the Lord and Lady of Tyntesfield, an enormous manor just a few miles from Stekelige Forest. In the years before his birth, the Raymers did not take a large part in Court affairs. They were just a small noble family from the countryside, more concerned with securing next year’s wheat harvest than their country’s raging war. The birth of Edward and, later on, his sister Gretchen, changed all that. Both siblings demanded to be taken to see all the beauty and color of Aster. At the time of his first visit to the capital city, Edward was just barely six years old.

He met Prince Soren on that first visit, and despite the radical difference in their personalities (even at six and eight, it was obvious what kind of men they would be) they became fast friends. Afterward, Edward was often brought from Tyntesfield to the palace so that he and the king’s son might play together. Even though he absolutely detested sports, Edward played football and various games with Soren and, later, his sister Lenore. Edward and Lenore did not immediately hit it off—she obviously wanted Soren to herself, and so, naturally, did Edward.

Edward grew up in the luxury and elegance given to all royal favorites. His father spend most of the profits made from farming to make Tyntesfield bigger and grander than any other home in Rutilius, barring the palaces. Soren, Lenore, and Edward were together as often as possible…until, of course, puberty hit. Lenore dropped the football and picked up the hairbrush, and her brother and his best friend went off to do whatever rich teenage boys are wont to do. Before he reached the age of fourteen, Edward had already drunk his first glass of champagne, smoked his first cigar, and lost his virginity.

It was all fun and games until Lord Leon Raymer passed away quietly in his sleep. At sixteen, Edward was named Lord of Tyntesfield and asked to take on all of his father’s duties. This was a problem. You see, Edward had no head for numbers, and had never been able to see himself being a gentleman farmer like his father. So, secretly, he handed all work at Tyntesfield over to his sister Gretchen, who gladly accepted. Lord Edward Raymer was, essentially, only a Lord in name.

The years following that were spent gathering popularity and strengthening contacts to other Magician families. Two weeks after his twentieth birthday, a man hopped into Edward’s carriage as he was leaving Aster. The man introduced himself as Cruiy, a representative of an organization he called the Illuminati. He seduced Edward with whispers of power and respect galore, and soon Ed found himself deep within the clutches of the Illuminati. Talk began, treasonous talk about killing Soren and replacing him with, you guessed it, Ed.

Don’t think that Edward didn’t know full well what he was doing; he’d always wanted to be king, ever since meeting the child Soren. But it still took some powerful persuasion to get him along with the Illuminati’s plot. Despite (or, possibly, because of) his relationship with Soren, the consequences of getting caught were very dire for Lord Raymer; arrest was a given, torture probable, and death a certain possibility. But the promises of the Illuminati were so very sweet, and so Edward engaged in a plot to kill off his best friend.

The first order of business was to secure the affection of Lenore, Soren’s sister. She was—and is—the key to the throne. His courtship of her began several months ago and is still ongoing. All else—the murder of Soren, the coup of Magician government—is riding on Edward and his ability to charm, lie, and lead.

◊ROLEPLAY SAMPLE ◊

SECRET PHRASES: Oh, stewardess! I speak jive.
    SAMPLE POST:

Mornings at Tyntesfield went like this.

Edward Meine Raymer is woken up by the family butler at precisely eight in the morning. Twenty minutes later, he is appropriately dressed and (depending if he feels up to it or not) freshly shaven. He then tromps down to have breakfast with his shriveled stick of a mother, his beloved sister Gretchen, and his slightly less adored siblings Hanna and Heinrich, who have, so far, all had similar mornings to Edward’s. The talk is always very terse and minimal, usually commencing of Gretchen cheerfully commenting on the loveliness of the morning or Mother grumbling about Edwards’s apparent disdain for hygiene. It is not a very pleasant environment.

Occasionally, Gretchen and Edward—possibly the only two Raymers still able to enjoy one another’s company—would make plans to altogether bypass the morning atrocities and take their breakfast in the garden. The others did not mourn their absence, or at least made a point not to say whether they did or did not. Tyntesfield was beautiful at all times of the day, but the two eldest Raymer children were in firm agreement that it was at its most breathtaking loveliness at dawn to early morning. It was at this time that, on the morning of June 1, Gretchen Raymer finally noticed something was terribly wrong with her brother.

Edward watched her watch him over the lip of the orange juice pitcher, knowing that she was about to say something but nonetheless clueless as to what that something might be. He ate his cinnamon rolls and pineapple strudel in a state of high awareness, ready to put fork and glass down the moment his sister opened her pretty lips. To his surprise, she waited until the butler had taken away their empty plates before leaning forward over the table and placing one tiny hand on both of his.

“Eddie,” She said, almost sighing his name. Aside from Soren and occasionally Lenore, Gretchen was perhaps the only one ever to call Edward by such a cutesy nickname. “Eddie, Eddie, I’m worried. About you, and about what you’re doing. I wish you’d tell me. Why won’t you tell me?”

Edward let silence hang in the hair for a few moments, then coolly pulled his hands out from under Gretchen’s. His eyebrows and lips were set in identically hard and stern lines as he stood up and looked down at her sweet, trusting face. Was this what she had called him to breakfast to ask? How shameful for her, and for him. How fortunate that she’d waited until they were alone. Edward’s voice was cold and crisp as winter wind. “It is not for you to know, Gretchen. Now, if you’ll excuse me—I have pressing business in Aster. Good day.” He left her sitting there in the gazebo, a small and confused young woman with burning hands. There was a carriage waiting for him on the drive, and inside that carriage he knew there would be Cruiy.

He hadn’t lied to Gretchen. He never had, not truly. There were just some things that his family must not hear of.

Chaos has reigned on Invoria for years. Many have died of battle, and even more have died of starvation. Every person of every walk of life is starting to feel a sort of emptiness inside themselves, like hunger. They hunger for peace, for knowing their children are safe, for the ability to close their eyes without waking in the grip of a night terror. The war has gotten such that no one really knows who started it anymore. Most are just fighting to protect themselves, or for revenge, or for the pride of their race. Many more are tired of the war, and would jump at the chance to have it come to an end.

That end may be coming sooner than we all think. There are many plots to stop the war, and just as many to continue it. Factions fight against factions in a battle of wits, heart, and power. One man, cannot win a war, however, and one race cannot rule over all. No matter how much they think that they can.

Where will you be in the deciding battles? What is your role to play in the world of Invoria?

Who will you place your faith in?

QUOTATIONS :
"The tragedy of war is that it uses man's best to do man's worst."
~ Henry Fosdick

"It is forbidden to kill; therefore all murderers are punished unless they kill in large numbers and to the sound of trumpets."
~ Voltaire

"Men are at war with each other because each man is at war with himself."
~ Francis Meehan

Jack Adlai Cinead
Character Spotlight

Biography | Relations
"I love Jack, and I've been rooting for him to win featured character for what seems like forever, but either I haven't been shouting loud enough, or my reasons make about as much sense as he does. Perhaps the most colorful character in all of Invoria, Jack Cinead is loads of fun, and role played masterfully. You're never quite sure what to expect from him, but you know it's going to turn out to be interesting. Fascinating to follow, and involved in some of the most gripping and action packed plots, Jack is the man!" ~Silv

"Cops and Robbers" - The Hoosiers
Theme Spotlight

"If Invoria turned into a musical (now there's a strange thought to consider xD) I'm pretty sure this song would be in there somewhere. Jack's one of the few characters I can see leading a musical number, but that's really besides the point. I think this song describes Jack relationship with authority perfectly. I love how it alternates between "if" we catch a criminal, and 'when' we catch a criminal, which makes clear the unstable nature of a life of crime. I also love how the upbeatness of the song sort of betrays the darkness of the lyrics. The song just makes me think Jack, and not just Jack, but how he views the world of Invoria and his experience. I think it's just awesome." ~Silv

Why you will not (>Survive<)
Thread Spotlight

"Benny is one of my favorite characters and to see her frank personality butt up against Nadira's cultured one makes for a good show. Plus you can't beat the Orc accent - it's the best! All in all a very unorthodox thread between two extremely different characters but a very good read." ~Jackie

Konstantin and Cadence
Couple Spotlight

His | X | His
"If I go too far into describing why I love this pairing, I’m certain I’ll turn into a screeching fan-girl. If it possible for two people to be so incompatible and yet so obviously made for each other? The way the Fish’s Cade’s arrogance bounces off Konstantin’s strong will is almost as glitteringly awesome as the northern lights. Also I’m dying to know—who is the dominant one?" ~OI
