Her face displeases me, her temperament disagrees with mine, and the situation which the two of us have been placed in is one too-delicate for my tastes. I find that even the very presence of her, now, sets me on edge, whether or not she chooses to speak. I believe that our personalities may be too alike to be cohesive, with, perhaps, similar tendencies and perspectives, made very different by our method of carrying out decisions. I will now speak of the area which causes such a rift between us, the one which forces me to bite my tongue in her company and submit to her words and her will. I remember this particular incident well, for it was flawed, to begin with. I needed to remove Arwydd Vanern. To extract him, I carried an armful of tools, which I deliberately dropped. The difficulty with this plan was the helpfulness of my townspeople, who offered to help me, time and time again. I denied their assistance many times, till I was finally able to find, in an uncommon throng of community members, Vanern. I led him to the deep of the forest, where I have a tree hollowed for such instances. We arrived, and I wasted no time. It's not my nature to give winding explanations as to why these things happen. I would rather get things over with. I kicked him to his knees and picked up one of the tools that he had been carrying: a long, curved blade, with a serrated edge. This, one of the integral components to felling a tree, was what brought Vanern into his next life. I stood behind him as I slid the weapon, and held his body still, as so not to disturb the snow with his blood. Red poured over my fingers, and it was only then that I realized I was not alone. I'm, to this day, uncertain as to how Streya Bheur ended up in the same place as I. It could have as easily been an error of mine (did blood from another linger there, still, drawing animals to my location?) as it could have been an unexpected happenstance, a result of her ambling through the bush. Whatever it was, it has cost me the freedom I cherished in the past. I'm not the type to squirm, and I will not grovel for her mercy, when I have done nothing more than aligned the values of society further. I deserve thanks, not to be treated as a man as foul as those I have removed from their human bodies. All the same, discretion is necessary, and I'm at odds for what to do. My alternatives, as far as I can tell, are few: she will either tell what she knows, and I will become a problem in the world I've attempted to fix, or she will use me and manipulate me with what she's seen. I must obey her, take every threat seriously; i must be cautious around her, behave regularly and not provoke the beast; eventually, I must kill her. She may be wary of me, now, but I will find her, one day, when the night is still and the waters calm, and she is off-guard. May her next life be wrought with the same success of her present one." |
