When your ten year old can swim 50m freestyle in 40 seconds and 50m butterfly in 45 seconds.....and she trains 3-4 times a week, you have to ask yourself the above question!

You know, when she was born, I saw a little ballerina, a fairy and a princess, never in my wildest dreams did I see a girl with the desire to compete at the next Olympics as potentially the next Madam Butterfly!!! My life is going to get very complicated....

That is so much cooler than Ballerinas and princesses!

Just make sure she does something else than training and competing. Children should be children above all. My sister had a classmate who was training day in, day out for the Olympics. He was really good and did nothing else than that. Then, an injury and he couldn't get to it. Now the guy wonders where his childhood went because he never got to do what the other children did. And that's sad.

(And I know you wouldn't let that happen, but just in case... )

The next olympics? Whoa :o
Anyway, I agree with Ireth that kids should be kids, too. I had a friend who had about 20mins of free time every week. That was a bit freaky...

And no, this is not supposed to mean that your kid doesn't have the time to be a kid and play with Barbies (or whatever they play with nowadays). It's just a thought.

You know she has never played with dolls, even when she was tiny. Never liked dolls. She reads and reads, and reads. She and I raced to finish the latest Harry Potter book before each other! I beat her by 2 hours, only because she was at swim training. Then we sat for about an hour and discussed the book. She smart beyond words. Shes just read the 7 books in the Rangers Apprentice Series, and the Four book in the Heart of the Lioness series, now shes completing Eldest, the sequel to Eragon! Blows my mind sometimes. Then I walked into my sons room to kiss him goodnight and he's reading Harry Potter!! He's 7!! OMG! He told me where he was up to and what had happened, so he was taking it in! Crap.

Hubby and I are looking at a Private School for them both as we can afford it and the school we are looking at has a very high standard of education and success. So if the Swimming doesn't pan out, she will have her brain!!! :P

I like how that sounds. Sounds much better than the swimming champ to me. But I'm a nerd ;)

Believe me, I'm absolutely all for kids being kids. And of course I'm all for education, above all else.

But if it's something she loves to do, and it one day has her standing on a podium while her countries flag is being raised front and center while the anthem is blaring and several thousand people sing in unison as they're strapping a medal around her neck...

Dream big, and don't let anyone tell her she "can't".

I feel so weird... If I had to stand on a podium and somebody raised the spanish flag and the anthem started playing I would run away. I don't have that kind of patriotic love for my country. And I don't want to.

Off topic, I know. Sorry.

To stay on topic I'll say that's an active one you have there, Addie ^_^

Shes been in front of crowds since she was a toddler. Started ballet at 2, and started charity work in Star Wars costumes with her mother at 4. In 3 weeks we are going to be at a huge charity footyball game in front of over 40,000 people, and she's excited. Shes been on stage for ballet and loves it so I doubt the crowd thing would put her off. She is active. This morning she did ballet, then 2 hours of swimming (where she swam 3.5 kilometers) and she is now currently on our exercise bike whiles eating an apple. She cant stop!

I never forced her, she used to come to classes with me and would join in, so it just seemed natural to start her when she danced most classes with me.

I can swim enough to keep myself alive, I definitely wouldn't ever be competing as a swimmer, though.

Unless they decide to open a 'Dead Weight' swim. Then I might do good.

I believe that is more commonly referred to as flailing and screaming.

Or drowning, depending on how you look at it.
