The article linked above reveals that a scientifically-conducted telephone survey of 1001 Italians was carried out by professional poll company, Doxa, on behalf of l'Associazione Paix Liturgique.

Five questions were asked (I'm paraphrasing them but the essence is correct):

1) Do you consider yourself to be Catholic?
Just over three-quarters of respondents answered "yes". Those who answered "no" were then eliminated from the rest of the survey.

2) How often do you go to Mass?
51% replied that they attended Mass at least once every month. (By extrapolating this it indicates that approximately 38% of the entire population of Italy currently attend Mass at least once every month).

3) Are you aware that Pope Benedict XVI freed the Traditional Latin Mass?
Only 58% of those who consider themselves to be Catholic had heard anything about the motu proprio. Amongst those who attend Mass at least once a month only 64% had heard of the motu proprio! In France the same survey had found that 82% of those who attended Mass at least once a month were aware of the motu proprio.

4) Should there at least be a co-existence of the TLM in your parish with the Modern Mass?
71% answered that the TLM should be regularly available in their parish, and 7% were undecided.

5) If it were available in your parish would you attend the TLM and how often?
21% of all those who considered themselves Catholic answered "yes", they would attend every week if it were available. This percentage rose to 40% amongst Sunday Mass attendees who currently go to Mass every week.

Extrapolating those figures to the population of Italy means, according to the article, that 9 million Italians would attend the TLM every week if it were available to them!

Of all those who consider themselves to be Catholic 33% stated that they would attend the TLM at least once a month if it were available.

Amongst those who already currently attend Mass at least once a month 63% stated that they would attend the TLM if it were available.

The article concludes that if the TLM were available in every parish in Italy every week, an average of 12 million Italians would be flocking to it during any Sunday.

That is one person in every five in Italy.

According to the article 20% of Italians would be found at the TLM on any given Sunday if the Mass were available!

Thank you for this Pilgrammage of Grace.

It is extremely interesting and what I think we need more of.

I wish that there were some site that collated such information so that we could get a better picture of the possible TRENDS at work in the work of restoring TLM.

If anyone knows of such efforts to collate and integrate such data, point to trends, please let me/us know ...

One of our members, Mornac, is usually well-informed about such things. He hasn't been around for a while but you could send him a private message with your request by using the appropriate facility here on Ignis. I believe that I'm correct in stating that he will automatically be sent an e-mail informing him that a private message awaits him at Ignis.
