--For man I suppose it was a combination of trial and error as well as observation. For animals it was undoubtedly their God-given instinct.

for man...... Genesis 2:16 And he commanded him, saying: Of every tree of paradise thou shalt eat: 17 But of the tree of knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat. For in what day soever thou shalt eat of it, thou shalt die the death.

but is anyone surprised to learn that all living creatures live and survive ( are nourished ) from the hand of God, our Father ?
