Title: Favourite hymns, anyone?

Clare - July 20, 2008 09:43 PM (GMT)
There is an old thread along these lines, but I thought I'd start a fresh one. :)

Here are some of mine:

O Godhead Hid, Devoutly I Adore Thee
God Of Mercy And Compassion
Soul Of My Saviour
Faith Of Our Fathers
Hail Queen Of Heaven
Lauda Jerusalem
O Filii Et Filiae
O Sanctissima

When I Survey the Wondrous Cross

When I survey the wondrous cross
on which the Prince of Glory died;
my richest gain I count but loss,
and pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
save in the death of Christ, my God;
all the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to his blood.
See, from his head, his hands, his feet,
sorrow and love flow mingled down.
Did e'er such love and sorrow meet,
or thorns compose so rich a crown.
Were the whole realm of nature mine,
that were an offering far too small;
love so amazing, so divine,
demands my soul, my life, my all.

My Favourite Hymns:

Amazing Grace
Kum Bah Yah
Colours of Day
All Things Bright and Beautiful
If I were a Butterfly

Especially if accompanied by a guitar or two, two tambourines, a couple of triangles, two recorders and some old Green Cardigan job on the organ.

Pilgrimage of Grace - July 21, 2008 04:37 PM (GMT)
:D How could there possibly be something wrong with All Things Bright and Beautiful, Admin? ;)

It was a classic from school assemblies back in the day.

This one was my favourite when I was a nipper. Don't know about it being fit for a a hymn as such but it could make a grand folk song.

When a Knight Won his Spurs in the Stories of Old
Tune: Stowey , from an English traditional melody.

When a knight won his spurs, in the stories of old,
He was gentle and brave, he was gallant and bold;
With a shield on his arm and a lance in his hand
For God and for valour he rode through the land.

No charger have I, and no sword by my side,
Yet still to adventure and battle I ride,
Though back into storyland giants have fled,
And the knights are no more and the dragons are dead.

Let faith be my shield and let joy be my steed
'Gainst the dragons of anger, the ogres of greed;
And let me set free, with the sword of my youth,
From the castle of darkness the power of the truth.

In no particular order...

Faith of our Fathers
Sweet Sacrament Divine
Crown Him with many crowns
Panis Angelicus
Soul of my Saviour

Patricia - July 23, 2008 09:39 AM (GMT)
My favourite:

O God of earth and altar,
bow down and hear our cry,
our earthly rulers falter,
our people drift and die;
the walls of gold entomb us,
the swords of scorn divide,
take not thy thunder from us,
but take away our pride.

From all that terror teaches,
from lies of tongue and pen,
from all the easy speeches
that comfort cruel men,
from sale and profanation
of honor, and the sword,
from sleep and from damnation,
deliver us, good Lord!

Tie in a living tether
the prince and priest and thrall,
bind all our lives together,
smite us and save us all;
in ire and exultation
aflame with faith, and free,
lift up a living nation,
a single sword to thee.

Close second:

This is the image of the Queen
Who reigns in bliss above;
Of her who is the hope of all,
Whom we and angels love!
Most holy Mary!

This homage offered at the feet
Of Mary's image here
To Mary's self at once ascends
Above the starry sphere.
Most holy Mary!

How fair soever be the form
Which here your eyes behold,
Its beauty is by Mary's self
Excell'd a thousandfold.
Most holy Mary!

Sweet are the flow'rets we have culled
This image to adorn;
But sweeter far is Mary's self,
That rose without a thorn!
Most holy Mary!

Yes it is, Clare. It's rare to hear it sung (unless you live next door to me). Goes to the tune of "The Church's One Foundation".

SWEET SACRAMENT DIVINE

Words by Francis Stanfield

SWEET Sacrament divine!

Hid in Thy earthly home,

Lo, round Thy lowly shrine,

With suppliant hearts we come.

Jesus, to Thee our voice we raise,

In songs of love and heartfelt praise,

Sweet Sacrament divine

Sweet Sacrament of peace!

Dear home of every heart,

Where restless yearnings cease,

And sorrows all depart.

There in Thine ear, all trustfully

We tell our tale of misery,

Sweet Sacrament of peace!

Sweet Sacrament of rest!

Ark from the ocean's roar,

Within Thy shelter blest

Soon may we reach the shore.

Save us, for still the tempest raves,

Save, lest we sink beneath the waves.

Sweet Sacrament of rest!

Sweet Sacrament divine!

Earth's light and jubilee,

In Thy far depths doth shine

Thy Godhead's majesty.

Sweet Light, so shine on us, we pray,

That earthly joys may fade away,

Sweet Sacrament divine

Jesu the very thought of thee
With sweetness fills my breast;
But sweeter far thy face to see,
And in thy presence rest.

Nor voice can sing, nor heart can frame,
Nor can the memory find,
A sweeter sound than thy blest name,
O Saviour of mankind.

O hope of every contrite heart,
O joy of all the meek,
To those who fall, how kind thou art,
how good to those who seek!

But what of those who find?ah! this
Nor tongue nor pen can show:
The love of Jesus, what it is
None but the lovers know.

Jesu, our only joy be thou,
As thou our prize wilt be;
Jesu, be thou our glory now,
And through eternity.

Patricia - July 24, 2008 01:42 PM (GMT)
I've only heard this sung once, more's the pity. Was my mother's favourite.

I rise from dreams of time
And an angel guides my feet
To the sacred altar throne
Where Jesus’ heart doth beat
Ever pleading day and night
Thou cannot from us part
O veiled and wondrous sight
O love of the Sacred Heart

The lone lamp softly burns
And a gentle silence reigns
Only with a low still voice
The Holy One complains
Ever pleading day and night
Thou cannot from us part
O veiled and wondrous sight
O love of the Sacred Heart

Long, long I’ve waited here
And though thou heeds not Me
The heart of God’s own Son
Beats ever on for thee
Ever pleading day and night
Thou cannot from us part
O veiled and wondrous sight
O love of the Sacred Heart

In the womb of Mary mild
In the cradle of the tree
Heart of pure undying love
You lived and died for me
Ever pleading day and night
Thou cannot from us part
O veiled and wondrous sight
O love of the Sacred Heart

"Rosa Vernans" is probably my favourite. A nice spring hymn to the Blessed Virgin.

Rosa vernans caritatis
Lilium virginitatis
Stella fulgens, Maria,
Vas sanctitatis,
Ora pro nobis Dominum.

Gemma lucens puritatis
Luminae divinitatis
Nobis adsis, Maria,
Thus suavitatis,
Ora pro nobis Dominum.

Cujus partus singularis
Vincula mortalitatis
Nobis scindit, Maria,
Lux libertatis,
Ora pro nobis Dominum.

Never heard of them! Must be because they're Australian!

QUOTE
Richard Connolly (born 1927) is an Australian musician, composer and former broadcaster for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC). His published and performed works allow him to be counted as among Australia's most prolific composers of Roman Catholic church music[1][2] particularly with regard to the hymns he composed for the Catholic church in Australia, and which are now published and used inter-denominationally. He is noted for his collaborations with Australian poet James McAuley. His compositions have been successful internationally, both in the Christian field and in the secular field.[2] His hymns have been composed to accommodate and adorn the liturgical reforms of the Second Vatican Council.

All of those 4 hymns and a number of other very good ones are contained in the Living Parish Hymn Book (used by the SSPX, a number of other traditionalist mass locations, and quite a few N.O. parishes, I think).

The McAuley/Connolly hymns are not 19C sacharine-type things either.

Very tasteful.

Oh, and there's another one:

Help of Christians Guard this Land (a kind of martial hymn. It sounds good with trumpet, bass trombone and tympani).

If anyone is able to locate the you tube of the recent dedication of the new altar in Sydney's metropolitan cathedral by Pope Benedict during WYD, they'll hear By Your Priestly Power at some point (I think holy communion) ...

I remembered one today, that I used to sing in choir at school. It's "O Come and Mourn", but not the version they're singing in chapel these days.

If anyone reads music, here is the version I prefer:

Just by glancing at the first couple of bars I know that that is not the tune I know and love, Adesto.

I like the one that goes "O co-ome and mo-ourn with me awhile; See Ma-ary calls us to-o her side..."

Your preferred version might be nice too. I'll try it out on my daughter's toy keyboard later! :piano:

Adesto - April 5, 2009 08:16 PM (GMT)
I found a midi version online, Clare :) Not much better than working it out on a keyboard, but it'll give you an idea:

O Come and Mourn

It sounds pretty simple but is great with four-part choir. We did a selection of Lenten pieces, including this and Bach's "O Sacred Head Surrounded", as well as T.L.d'Victoria's "Amicus Meus" from the Tenebrae Responseries and a Miserere, but I can't remember the composer and I've never been able to find either the setting or a recording again. We did a couple of others as well but I can't remember them now. If Gregario Sarto was still around he'd be able to tell you.

Is that the one G K Chesterton wrote, Patricia? I don't think I've ever heard it sung. :(

We used to sing it at school... not a bad tune.

My Favourite Hymns:

Amazing Grace
Kum Bah Yah
Colours of Day
All Things Bright and Beautiful
If I were a Butterfly

Especially if accompanied by a guitar or two, two tambourines, a couple of triangles, two recorders and some old Green Cardigan job on the organ.

...there's another one I seem to remember called "Autumn Days". Was anyone else here subjected to it? I think it was voted worst hymn of all time by Michael Davies...
