The Xivai - Wandering Tribe
-------------------------------------------------------
Gaunt and emaciated, a small group of Xivai swim lazily along the fringe of the volcanic wastelands, an area of full of volcanic vents belching forth heat from the planet’s bowels. These six Xivai are the only survivors of a fierce Tanaxai raid on a Xivai colony, and they all bear the scarred-over wounds to show it. One of their member, a large female, has undergone a hormonal change and is rapidly increasing in size to replace the colony’s lost Geryon. She will soon be so bloated that she’ll have to maintain a sedentary lifestyle and become a living egg factory, The other Xivai are half-starved, for they have not eaten for several days. The meagre pickings they could find in these benthic depths were given up to the pre-Geryon, to ensure the survival of their colony. After a week of wandering, the disjointed tribe found the pit-caves bordering the wastelands, and decided to settle. Life is scarce for the most part, but around active vents there is always an explosion of life forms. Organic snow, the remains of rotting corpses from above, constantly drifts down on the bleak landscape. It is a serene and dreary scene. The scattered tribe of Xivai drift across the area like ghosts, their black exoskeletons hard to make out in the darkness.

The tribe itself is socially unstable, its members as unpredictable as the volcanic vents. The two males, physically smaller than the females, hold great contempt for the dominant gender. The females disrespect the males, seeing them as bags of sperm who’s only use is in the procreation of their young. Because of this social gap, the tribe’s members are distant, bordering on physically hostile to each other.

A preliminary scan of the area by the only adult male in the tribe shows that there are dozens of volcanic vents. About three quarters of them are active at any given time, swarming with life until some movement deep down in the planet’s tectonics cuts off its magma flow and its heat dissipated, killing all the animals who couldn’t stand to be exposed to the freezing temperatures, or those who couldn’t migrate to the next active vent. The menagerie of creatures there were predominantly black, albino, or colourless, and consisted of ghostly fish, pale crustaceans, and the occasional predatory squid or octopus. Massive swarms of jellyfish drifted about like underwater smoke.

The tribe took cover inside a small pit-cave. Tomorrow, they would have to hunt.

The Xivai were a nameless society. Their thought-speak electric signaling did not need to go through any form of transition as crude as names or words. Still, each mind signal had a unique electrical trace, one that could be interpreted as a name, though not one any other race would understand.

The abstraction of names in the Xivai thought-speak soon started applying itself to other things, and it wasn't long before the tribe members started questioning if the tribe should be referred to as more than the thought-speak equivalent of 'us'.
-------------------------------------------------------
What do you want the tribe name to be?
A) Xrizk'gor'Xxizriskaz (Slaves of the Presence)
B) Xrisk'Kriskazaaz (Slave Takers/Makers)
C) Xrizkez'gor'Xarixxask (Prophets of the Maw)
D) Xiisk (Them)
E) Dirisk'gor'Xiiskarakk (Demons of the/from the Abyss)
F) Suggest another tribe name, and have them accept it.
G) None of the above and keep debating names.

As the drifting members of the tribe returned to the set of pit-caves that they called home, they heard, or rather sensed, the equivalent of a thundering roar in thought-speak. It was Xriskeezax, the female that was becoming their Geryon. “Xarixxask! Devourer, consumer, it comes, it nears, the maw, it-DEVOUR! CONSUME! EAT! IT CONSUMES US ALLLLLLL!!!!!!!!!!” As the others neared her stationary body they saw Xriskeezax’s body twitching and writhing, as if in a seizure or if in great pain. Xarask, the tribe member closest to Xriskeezax, swam toward her body, slightly worried. As she neared Xriskeezax snapped her head to face her, and stopped twitching. Her body was massive at this point, and her head alone was almost as large as Xarask’s body. “I am Xrizkez’gor’Xarixxask. A prophet of the Great Maw. You, the rest, are the blackmawed, the Xerxarixxask. Such is what I have sensed, such is what will be. Now begone.”

No tribe member, not even the males, dared disrespect the Geryon’s words. The Geryon was their queen, their eggmother, and their leader. Without her, the tribe could not grow. As they slept during the day, the tribe was plagued with nightmarish visions and impulses, and an overwhelming desire to consume. An insatiable hunger-lust. The will of the Great Maw.
[Mysticism +10] [Food Needed +1/Tribe Member]

The Geryon in particular received the brunt of the dream-messages, being the Xrizkez, the prophet, of the entire tribe. She had a waking dream, and in a lucid state she wandered a dark hall. The floor and ceiling twitched with life as she sensed nerves run through them. The very walls of the hall she was in were organic, and alive at that. She saw the bio-electric signals as light in her mind’s eye, and everything alive was bathed in a cool light. Among the dull light of the living masonry, several black outlines stood out distinctly, each on a pedestal embedded into the living walls. She could make out their vague shapes by indirectly sensing their silhouettes against the organic hall. There were four statues, each with very distinctive shapes. The first was bulky and glutinous. The second was skeletal and sharp. The third was ragged and sagging. The fourth was thin and needle-like. They all had similar shapes to a Xivai head, and could possibly be busts of Xivai. Suddenly, a voice sounded in her head, though it seemed to emanate from her stomach, and as it spoke she felt pangs of hunger and an overwhelming desire to both consume and be consumed.

<You have looked upon the four faces of the Great Maw. They are all different aspects of hunger. The first is hunger fulfilled, properly known as Gluttony. Hunger is a constant force, that will arrive again whether satiated or not. Hunger fulfilled is a hopeless achievement, an impossible task – it can be driven off momentarily, but is sure to return. However, a certain strength can be derived from hunger fulfilled, for it is food that makes the body strong, the flesh resilient. Through study of Gluttony one can achieve knowledge of Gluttonstrength.

The second is hunger unfulfilled, properly known as Famine. As stated before, hunger is impossible to satiate. It is a futile task, despite its rewards. Starvation is a powerful force, and can draw out a level of desperation that no other force can rival. A body lacking food is a body malnourished, though only in the flesh. If starved for a long enough time, hungerlust can drive a Xivai wild, drawing out a strength that can’t be drawn out any other way. Famine-strength is unrivaled in it’s ferocity, its sheer and raw power. Through study of Famine one can achieve knowledge of Faminestrength.

The third is worldrot hunger, properly known as Worldrot. Worldrot is a hunger not confined to one individual, or even a hundred. It is the hunger of the entire world, the hunger of the Great Maw, whose stomach is our world. Decomposition is the digestion of matter in the Great Stomach, as everything rots, to be digested and reborn. Worldrot is best seen in the deep abysses of the ocean, where the rotting remnants of all organic life is constantly drifting in from above. Through study of Worldrot one can achieve knowledge of Rot-touch.

The fourth is the hunger for blood, properly known as Bloodthirst. Bloodthirst is a different type hunger for blood – the act of spilling it, and the drinking of the blood itself. Flesh is not important. It can be torn away and regrown, but blood cannot be lost in any great quantity. It is impossible to recover from a grievous loss of blood, but possible to recover from a grievous flesh wound. Blood is the life-force of a body, a combination of it’s body and soul, and so in drinking it, we prevent the soul from being reborn in any plane, mortal or immortal. Through study of Bloodthirst one can achieve knowledge of Haemomancy.>

-------------------------------------------------------
Which aspect of the Great Maw do you wish to follow?
A) Gluttony.
B) Famine.
C) Worldrot.
D) Bloodthirst.
E) Keep them all in mind and thought, though only specializing in one. (Worldrot)

The Xivai – Xerxarixxask’gor’Xiiskarakk Tribe
-------------------------------------------------------
Several hours after the Geryon’s dream-vision, the members of the tribe began to awaken. They were all now desperately hungry, not haven eaten for several days. The tribe dispersed from the cave, not wanting to mingle with each other. The males went one way, and each of the females went their own way.

Zaar wandered into the wastelands, wanting some solitude and privacy. She drifted between the volcanic vents, avoiding the vents which belched forth black smog and blistering heat. She could sense that a great many of creatures were around her. Tube-worms of some sort grew on the vents among cancerous-looking corals, sponges, and polyps. Pale worms chased even paler crabs through cracks on the scarred ground. Her own body was home to a menagerie of symbiotic creatures. Spindly pycnogonid carcharii slept in the gaps between her exoskeleton, and beneath her skin were tick-like parasites which gave her potent toxins in exchange for her blood. On her back, chimney-like structures were home to some sort of hallucinogenic pseudo-algae. Suddenly, the carcharii on her body lurched off and scuttled away. She followed them, and soon saw what attracted them. There, lying on scorched black ground, was a corpse. It had been there for at least a week, judging by the amount of decay that had set in. Nameless creatures scuttled away from the putrid crevices of the body at the arrival of the carcharii and their mistress. Little was left of the body save the bones and fat, which had rotted into a putrid white slime. The body was at least ten feet long, and was either ichthyoid or reptilian. The skull had belonged to a fearsome beast. It was of solid build, and had three rows of serrated daggers in place of teeth. It was a lucky find. Zaar let her carcharii feast on the rotting fat, and decided that she would drag back what she could of the blackwater demon corpse.

Xerersk also wandered by herself. Bored and lacking anything else to do, she decided that she would search for some food in the many caves that fringed the wastelands. Pale jellyfish were everywhere, but she found them unpalatable. The first three caves held only the great swarms of albino crabs that were abundant, and the fourth had a white lobster-like crustacean which she ate gratefully. She searched that cave thoroughly, but she could not find more of them. The fifth cave that she ventured into had no life in it, which was strange. She decided to investigate, and quickly found out why. The cave had a floor which was ripped apart by great fissures and cracks. She sensed some sort of life in these cracks, dull brown sedentary ovals. They were seeds. Curious, Xerersk picked one up and examined it. Then she squeezed it. The seed exploded, its insides expanding to break the outer shell. Within minutes, thin vines had ensnared Xerersk’s arm, growing small barbs and thorns. It was a painful experience, but the vines did not manage to break the exoskeleton and no real harm was done. In the back of the cave, Xerersk discovered more of the vines that had ensnared her arm. She decided to take the seeds and vines back to the tribe, though she was careful not to apply too much pressure to them.

In the wastelands, Xiraterix and Xiisk were gathering jellyfish to eat. They were in an area where a the vents were roughly arranged in a circle around them, and had unknowingly wandered into a Mawhound’s territory. Mawhounds were vicious creatures, massive eels with a tentacle-lined mouth, filled to the brim with needle-like teeth. This particular one was around fifteen feet long, a dominant male who had to hunt for the harem of breeding females he had back at his lair. Sensing the two intruders into his territory, he attacked. Xiisk was barreled over by the mawhound before Xiraterix could react. The mawhound’s three jaws had Xiisk’s upper chest in a firm hold, despite his six tentacles clawing his skin and giving him powerful electric shocks. Xiraterix rushed over and stabbed the beast with his horn, but the mawhound’s thick tail whipped him out of the way. Xarask was nearby when she sensed Xiisk’s thought-cries for help. She was not fond of the young male, but was curious as to what was ailing him, and swum over. Sensing the mawhound on Xiisk and Xiraterix’s semi-conscious body, she saw an opportunity to bring food back for the tribe. With a large experienced female attacking it, the mawhound saw that it was in over its head. It regurgitated its last meal of several albino eels, clouding the water with blood, and escaped.

That night, the tribe had a pitiful meal of half-digested albino eels, the ones regurgitated by the mawhound. The majority of it went to the Geryon, and the rest of the Xerxarrixxask left the meal still hungry. Xiisk now had a huge wound on his shoulder, the exoskeleton cracked and ripped away and the flesh underneath savaged. His carcharii settled on the wound, secreting some sort of slime which numbed the pain for him.

Zaar and Xiraterix stayed up longer than the others that night. Zaar had shifted rocks about to trap several colonies of white cave crabs, putting them in different living conditions. Some lived in colder water, some in warmer, some in areas with a higher water pressure, some in areas with porous rocks, some in areas with no terrain in which to hide, and so on. She fed them with the whiterot drifting in from above, and with the putrid blubber from the blackwater demon corpse she and her carcharii had found. Xiraterix stayed awake, unable to sleep. His head still throbbed from the blow that the mawhound had dealt him, but he clearly remembered seeing Xarask rush to Xiisk’s aid. Without her, they both would’ve surely perished…he had some thinking to do.

The Xivai – Xerxarixxask’gor’Xiiskarakk Tribe
-------------------------------------------------------
After a number of hours dormant in their pit-caves, the Xerxarixxask began to awake uneasily. Their dreams had been of rotting flesh and cadavers. Their deity had been displeased at their lack of worship and religious activity, and made them feel it their sleep. The Geryon, being the most religious of them all, felt it especially hard, and made her wrath known to the rest of the working tribe members. They were all disgruntled by the unpleasant dream-visions, their hunger only sharpening their already precarious tempers.

Zaar once again detached from the tribe to wander the smoking plains. Xiisk watched her leave, and was curious as to where she went and for what reason. He trailed her, though it was impossible to hide his presence, for there was no way to cloak his body’s bio-electric impulses from his nervous system. Once she noticed, she rounded on him.

<Why do you follow me?>, she thought in mind-speak.

Xiisk was caught off guard, and responded truthfully instead of masking his response in feminine hatred. <I am curious as to where you go.>

This was an answer Zaar did not expect. To her own surprise, she found that she did not mind his presence, unlike the others. <Then follow me.> she thought.

Together, they explored a small area of the wasteland fringe, trying to remember the landscape. [Male-Female Tribe Relations +5]

Xerersk wandered the pit-caves, frustrated and hungry. She wanted to go hunt big game, but even she knew that she stood no chance alone. Crabs and jelly-fish did not satisfy her hunger. If anything, they made it even worse. Their lack of taste and uncomfortable textures made her long for the cold satisfaction of fresh meat. Instead, she roamed the many caves and holes that dotted the wasteland fringe. She noticed that in some of them, the walls were soft and smoother, not the craggy black rock that it usually was. Curious, she wandered closer, and touched these patches of clay. It was thick and dense, but she found that her claws and tentacles could easily shape it. She scraped a small ball of the material off, and shocked it with her tentacles, giving it all the voltage she could muster. To her surprise, it grew hard in her grip. Shocked, she let the small clump drop. The exposure to the water made the clay soft again. Still, the strange substance intrigued Xerersk, and she gathered several clumps to bring back to the tribe.

The only others left back at the main cave were Xarask and Xiraterix. Xarask still believed males to be of lesser strength and importance than females, especially after her rescue of them from the Mawhound hierarch. She still didn’t quite know why she did it, only that some subconscious instinct had told her to. Xiraterix had mixed feelings. All his life he was scorned and hated by the females, yet Xiraterix risked her life to rescue him and Xiisk. Suddenly, Xarask left the cave. Xiraterix decided he should follow, and together they embarked on a hunt, bringing along the teeth from the blackwater demon and some thorny vines from the kraklash seeds.
-------------------------------------------------------
How do the Xivai hunters use the demon teeth?
A) They grip them in their hands/tentacles and use them as daggers, stabbing with them.
B) They whittle a hole in the exoskeleton on their wrists/tentacles and place the teeth inside, sealing the hole with mucus-resin. They use their hands and tentacles like spiked clubs.
C) Suggest another way to use the teeth and have the tribe accept that.
-------------------------------------------------------
How do the Xivai hunters use the kraklash vines?
A) They wrap the thorned vines around their hands and tentacles, turning the appendages into spiked clubs.
B) They hold either side of the vine and use it as a garrote, pinning down their enemies.
C) They attach the vines to their torso and other areas of their body, using it as spiky armour.
D) Suggest another way to use the teeth and have the tribe accept that.
-------------------------------------------------------
The day was long before they arrived in the Mawhound hierarch’s territory. Scouting the area, Xarask found the tunnel that the hierarch and his harem called home. She stood still, trying to determine if the hierarch was inside. She sensed nothing, and continued without Xiraterix. Xiraterix was quickly reverting to his old hate of females. So far, Xarask had not paid him the slightest attention, treating him as if he wasn’t there. He would have left long ago if not for the pain in his stomach.

Inside the Mawhound tunnel, both Xivai hunters made an effort to be quiet and stick to the walls. Luckily, the Mawhound hierarch was out hunting, and had left his harem alone. There were about five females, none of them as large or ferocious as the hierarch. Still, they were not to be taken lightly. Each of them still had four grasper-tentacles and needle-lined maws which were plenty dangerous, even if lacking the sheer size of the male. Neither Xivai had detected the presence of these females, though sensed that they were inside. Suddenly, one of the females bull-rushed Xarask, and pinned her down, striking at the areas in which she was already wounded. It was not long before Xivian blood clouded the water. Xiraterix began striking at the lone attacker, clawing it and shocking it. It was remarkably resilient, but he managed to slow it’s attacks. He could sense Xarask’s bio-electric signals fading…she would not last much longer. In the melee he thrust his horn into the mawhound cow’s skull, and it’s flailing body slowly relaxed and grew cold. It was dead. He lifted the body, and saw that Xiraterix was still alive. She was direly wounded, but not fatally. The enormous pressure of the deep had already slowed her bleeding. She looked at Xarask with a new sense of respect…she had saved his life because the tribe would eventually need him to breed with the Geryon…she had no such necessary purpose. [Male-Female Tribe Relations +5]

Xiraterix began the long swim home, dragging the dead Mawhound cow and supporting Xarask’s wounded body.

That night was the first night that the tribe was fully fed. They saved the bones, and cast the leftover flesh into one of the volcanic vents on an order from the Geryon. She hoped that it would placate the Great Maw, fearing what other dream-visions he could inflict upon her psyche.

Once again, as the majority of the tribe fell into sleep Zaar stayed up. She gathered white-rot from outside of the cave and gave it to her crab populations, who had changed little since she last saw them. Still, she sensed that something good would come out of her experiments. When she turned around to go to her cave niche she saw that Xiisk’s body was convulsing. Alarmed, she swam quickly over to him. He was in a feverish sleep, and his nervous system was sending out signals faster than usually. She traced the signals over to the wound on his torso, and sensed something else alive there. It was a small lump of gray-green flesh, definitely not Xivai in origin. Suddenly, she had a flash of déjà vu. She had seen this organism somewhere else…from her past tribe…vast quantities of it, used to sculpt homes out of…sacrifice…priests…Ysugtha…

She fainted and fell unconscious beside the infected body of Xiisk.

The Xivai – Xerxarixxask’gor’Xiiskarakk Tribe
-------------------------------------------------------
The entire tribe awoke to strained thought-screams emanating from Xiisk, whose twitching body was slumped over, floating unconsciously in the middle of the cave. The growth on his chest had doubled in size since last night, and was now extending parasitic tendrils over the rest of his body. Xiisk’s carcharii tried to bite and claw it off, but their venomous saliva, sharp teeth and legs had no effect on the rubbery mass.

Zaar didn’t show it, but inside she was worried about Xiisk. He wasn’t like the other members of the tribe. He had a youthful inquisitiveness that surpassed the gender-based hate and discrimination leveled on him by Xiraterix. The other tribe members weren’t so remorseful. The older females, Xriskeezax included, still held memories of their old tribe, Xiiskav. That tribe had vast catacombs of the Ysugtha, and worshipped them as demi-gods while still channeling living tunnels into their flesh. The Ysugtha were a powerful resource, no doubt. If nothing else, their resilient rubbery flesh could be easily cultivated and built with. Still, a six-member tribe was hardly a tribe at all. The loss of one tribe member would be devastating. Further, the loss of one male would leave Xiraterix alone amidst a group of females, bringing down the gender equalization that was so close to uniting the tribe.

Xarask was left back at the tribe, recovering from the wounds that the mawhound cow had inflicted upon her. She was nervous, and was careful to keep her distance from Xiisk’s unconscious body. She doubted that the tribe would let him live…if she were in a position to decide, she wouldn’t. If she was infected…

-------------------------------------------------------
How do you want to deal with this situation?
A) Let the Ysugtha growth take over Xiisk’s body, setting it in another cave and sacrificing carcasses to it so that it can thrive.
B) Try to remove the ysugtha growth from Xiisk by shocking it and peeling it off, and applying xorx sponge on the left over wounds.
-------------------------------------------------------
Even with Xiisk’s condition in critical, the tribe had to attend to their duties. Xriskeezax spent the day deep asleep, for her gargantuan body had becoming cemented to the back of the main cave with mucus-resin bonds. Her body was developing an egg sac and clusters of ovaries, for she would soon be ready to mate and bear children. While she slept, the Xarixxask was creating a link to her that led to him, so that he could more directly interact with the tribe whose memetic realm he had emerged from.

Xerersk, lacking any direct thing to do, decided to swim out into the wastelands and investigate a cluster of vents who had suddenly shut off. Tectonic forces deep below had shifted, diverting a stream of magma and cutting off heat to the cluster of vents, killing off any sedentary life that existed on it, like the corals, sponges, crinoids, and bivalves. Carcharii on her thickly muscled body scuttled off to scavenge scraps from the still-warm vents. She picked among the dead things, whose bodies were blanched white from the lack of life. Among them she noticed soft, frilly sponges, and the ragged husks of coral whose shells were coarse and cutting. Interested in them both, she gathered them and headed back for the tribe. Little did she know, but the sponges she had picked out, xorx sponges, had antibiotic chemicals which would be useful for healing wounds.

Not far away, Zaar was gathering clusters of bain, free-floating sponges that seemed more like some kind of kelp or plant. She couldn’t keep her mind off of Xiisk, and was truly and deeply worried for him.

Xiraterix was also not idle, gathering whatever crustaceans, fish, or radiates he could find on or around the wastelands. She was thinking of the tribe which they had all been separated from…the death tribe. Their reputation was formidable. They had assimilated another Xivian tribe in their time, and had access to a near endless source of Ysugtha, which they worked into their weapons and architecture. If her pathetic tribe could harvest the powerful life-form, they might be able to approach the level of greatness that they had come from.
