The Crystalli - Wandering Tribe
-------------------------------------------------------
Separated from their individual families and tribes, a small group of lost Crystalli have stumbled upon a wide-spaced fringe of trees bordering a beautiful azure lake in the northeastern branch of the flooded jungle. They have been wandering for quite some time and eating whatever small animals they could find. A pregnant female who has just recently joined them has forced them to settle down. The leading male has decided to settle down in this particularly fertile branch of the jungle. They have easy access to fresh water and a variety of prey, and there aren’t too many large predators to worry about here. Not many beasts would be willing to attack an eight-foot armoured giant, and the tribe is relatively safe for now.

A preliminary scan of the surrounding area finds that it is as abundant in resources as it is in beauty. Several small amphibians crowd the lakeside, with fish further in. Small reptiles and mammals climb the trees, preying on equally tasty insects. Many of the trees bear fruit, and some of the trees have edible leaves. Wood is available in abundance here, whether it be living, dead, or washed up on the lake shores. Strong, supple vines are in almost limitless supply, and the lake has washed up hundreds of stones of every shape and size.

The larger trees here are large enough to provide a place to sleep for the six-member tribe. Their stomachs are empty after their long journey, and tomorrow they shall have to hunt.

At dawn the Crystalli awoke, and attended to their basic needs. They ventured to the lake as a group to drink, and spotted triangle-headed amphibians living in holes along the river bank. After drinking, the Crystalli split into two groups. The females would begin harvesting wood while attending to the needs of the pregnant female, who was unable to work. The males would hunt for the entire tribe, going after larger game. When they were done, they would meet back up at the stand of trees that they had slept in the previous night.

As the females waded through the pools of the flooded jungle, they found that there were three types of wood for them to choose from. The first was living wood, which had to be cut from trees. It was the strongest and firmest of the wood, and carried a lot of moisture. The other type was dead wood from rotting logs and fallen trees. This wood was the softest and would sometimes crumbled into soil if even touched. It was also incredibly porous and carried the most water. The last type of wood was driftwood washed up on the banks of the lake. It was smooth and blanched, light and dry. One of the females argued that they shouldn’t harvest living wood, because the jungle spirit would be angered.

-------------------------------------------------------
How do you want to deal with this situation?
A) Listen to the adult female, and don’t gather living wood.
B) Heed her advice, and only gather some living wood.
C) Ignore her and gather living wood.

The Crystalli - Grove Tribe
-------------------------------------------------------
The young adult female heeded her elder’s advice, though not completely. She argued that the living wood was the strongest, and it was best that they bring back some to the tribe, along with some dead wood and driftwood. The adult female reluctantly agreed, but made sure that they cut the wood as gently as they could – which, incidentally, was not very gentle. They were forced to use sharp rocks and their massive strength to hew branches from the trees. On their trip back to the grove, the adult female seemed pleased and more at peace than the young adult female had seen her before, like she suddenly understood something. [Mysticism +3]

Further away, the males waded through the water, searching for large prey. The young adult male stayed in the trees, increasing the range of sight for the hunting party. Suddenly, they heard a splash. About twenty feet away, they saw a Gigadon, a large predatory synapsid resembling a Dimetrodon. It was a scaly mammal-like reptile, and its twelve-foot long body was powerfully muscled. Its jaw was massive and filled with long mammalian canines, not the sharp small teeth you’d find in true reptiles. They feared the beast, since it saw them as prey just as much as they saw it as prey. The three hunters froze in mid-step, trying to formulate a plan yet afraid to make a move or sound, less the beast see them. It was too late – the Gigadon’s heavily muscled neck turned in their direction, and it saw the two males on the ground. The young adult male in the trees remained hidden however, and he decided to take advantage of this.

He quietly glided down to the base of the tree, to grab a rock. He didn’t know what would work best to drop on the animal to wound it…what size was better? Large or small? How about the shape? Blunt or sharp? He settled on a round-ish rock about as large as a man’s head. Grabbing it in his hands, he climbed back up the tree using his feet and two prehensile tails. The males below were still staring at the Gigadon, which remained motionless. The male took up pre-gliding position on a tall branch, flexed his wings, and jumped. The sudden movement in the canopy distracted the Gigadon and the two males beneath grabbed branches close to them to arm themselves.

The Gigadon growled at the young adult male gliding above it, when the male let the rock it was holding drop. The rock hit the Gigadon’s right hind leg, and it roared in pain – though the sudden loss of weight from dropping the rock made the gliding male lose control and crash-land into a large tree trunk. The wounded Gigadon, limping, was close enough to the male, and charged at him, tearing a gash in his flank before he was able to get up. It would have killed him too, if not for the sudden arrival of the two elder males. They raised the tree branches in their hands and clubbed the beast until it was dead.

With the beast dead and the wounded male safe, the hunting group started making plans on how to get both the large carcass and limping male back to the grove. The second adult male looked around the clearing they had come into a grabbed a pale fern-like plant growing between some rocks. He crushed it with his teeth and applied it to the young male’s wound.
[Herblore +5] They waited for the effects of the herb to sink in, and the two unhurt males carried the Gigadon carcass while the hurt male limped his way back, able to walk – just slower than normal. The two adult males had carried their clubs back with them as well, for they had learned that they made effective weapons. If there were knobs on them, they did more damaged but damaged the hide, and the head and neck were more fatal areas to hit.

Back at the home grove, the two parties joined together and told of their exploits. The adult female’s jungle spirits idea was generally accepted, though there was some argument about their number. The adult female said that there were a multitude of jungle spirits, each embodying an aspect of nature. The younger female said that there were many, but they embodied different emotions. The leader said that there was only one jungle spirit, and it was omniscient and all-powerful. The others stayed quiet, and thought on these.

-------------------------------------------------------
How do you want to deal with this situation?
A) Follow the ideas of the adult female and believe that there are a multitude of spirits embodying different aspects of the natural world.
B) Follow the ideas of the adult female and believe that there are a multitude of spirits embodying different emotions.
C) Follow the ideas of the leader and believe that there is only one, all-powerful omniscient god/goddess.
D) Suggest another idea to the tribe, and have them follow that idea.
-------------------------------------------------------
The questions about the jungle spirits brought on more questions about them, now that their general existence was confirmed by the tribe. The leader thought that their genders were as they were on the planet – male and female. The spiritual adult female believed that the spirits were too otherworldly to have genders, and were simply genderless.
-------------------------------------------------------
How do you want to deal with this situation?
A) Follow the ideas of the adult female and believe that divine spirits lack genders.
B) Follow the ideas of the leader and believe that divine spirits have male and female genders.
-------------------------------------------------------
The rest of the time was rather mellow. The leader tried to skin the Gigadon carcass, but failed. The only remnants were a pock-marked hide that was absolutely useless. The tribe devoured the intact Gigadon flesh happily, the males eating before the males in order of oldest to youngest. Some of the other tribe members resented this social hierarchy.
-------------------------------------------------------
How do you want to deal with this situation?
A) Change the social hierarchy so that it is females first, oldest to youngest.
B) Change the social hierarchy so that it is females first, youngest to oldest.
C) Change the social hierarchy so that it is males first, youngest to oldest.
D) Change the social hierarchy so that it is whoever can push their way through and eat.
E) Lose the social hierarchy, and have everyone eat as much as they need, saving the rest.
-------------------------------------------------------
As night closed in, the leader began to start rubbing rocks and sticks together, following a vague thought in his mind. He was trying to make fire, though he didn’t know it yet. After an hour of vigorously trying to create enough friction to start a fire, he was rewarded with a spark – but that was it. The spark leapt from the driftwood that the leader was rubbing against another piece of driftwood, and fell on the moist tree branch, and died.

The tribe members soon fell asleep, sated and content.

The tribe scaled a massive tree in the rainforest grove that they had been calling home, clutching the left-over Gigadon flesh from their last hunt. As they sat around gnawing off large chunks of flesh, they began grunting at each other, forming noises and trying to communicate vocally. Some of these noises formed into words and names.

As the Crystalli's language matured into individual names, they began thinking of unity for their tribe. Another debate followed, their language maturing while they discussed what their tribe name would be. Their grunts were now more structured and longer. They were the beginnings of a complex language. The Crystalli - Chyran Tanelm Tribe
-------------------------------------------------------
The next morning was an eventful one, and an important event in the tribe’s history. The tribe members woke up in a panic to a surprised-sounding roar. Erera, the most religious of the tribe’s members and the mother of Myre, was standing up with a mixture of surprise and amazement in each of her three eyes. Seeing the arrival of the others, she quickly pointed at the large puddle near her feet. Three leaves were floating on its surface. Seeing nothing out of the ordinary, Rothourn grunted at her quizzically.

“Look!” She grunted back.

Etash and Myre looked at each other briefly, both sharing the same confusion that the other tribe members had. Erera changed her body stance, giving the small puddle the full brunt of her attention. Her three eyes stared down the puddle, and her body relaxed. With an upward motion of her arm, the three floating leaves in the puddle flew gently upward, as if by a gust of wind. Guided by Erera’s hand, the three leaves blew gently into the jungle canopy. When they were out of sight Erera collapsed, breathing heavily.

“It take lot of energy. Hard. But spirits help. Show me how to do.” she grunted at the other tribe members.

The other tribe members were amazed. They had just witnessed magic, though had no understanding of it other than that it was derived from their religion and the spirits embodying their emotions.

Now that the spirits were influencing their lives more directly, the tribe members were more inclined to think about them. Still a new religion, many details have yet to have been hammered out, and varying schools of thought collided in the tribe. First of all, the crystalli had different ideas of how many spirits there were in total, and the varying levels of their importance. Rothourn said that there must be countless dozens flowing throughout nature, while Etash said that it would make sense that there were a few, a pantheon of spirits. Myre took both aspects of their ideas and said that there were many dozens of spirits, though there was a set pantheon of a few major spirits who ruled over the lesser spirits.

-------------------------------------------------------
How do you want to deal with this situation?
A) Follow Rothourn’s thought path, and believe that there are multitudes of small, lesser spirits.
B) Follow Etash’s thought path, and believe that there are a pantheon of powerful god-like spirits.
C) Follow Myre’s thought path, and believe that there a pantheon of powerful god-like spirits ruling over multitudes of small, lesser spirits.
D) Suggest another idea to the tribe, and have them accept it as truth.
-------------------------------------------------------
Before the last debate was even resolved, another one rose up. The tribe knew that the spirits were associated with different emotions, but how they were affiliated was never addressed. Erera said that the spirits came into the world under their sphere of emotion already, and would be affiliated with that emotion for the rest of their ethereal lives. Risthere volunteered his idea that the spirits were pliable, and switched their emotional allegiance often and at their own whims. They were free to chose which sphere of emotion they wanted to reside in, but could switch at anytime. Myre, always the peacemaker, once again made a compromise in between the ideas. She said that spirits came into the world without an emotional allegiance, but once they decided they could not switch back.
-------------------------------------------------------
How do you want to deal with this situation?
A) Follow Erera’s thought path, and believe that spirits came into the world under one emotion and never changed.
B) Follow Risthere’s thought path, and believe that spirits were free to choose which emotion they wanted to align themselves with, and changed at their whims.
C) Follow Myre’s thought path, and believe that spirits came into the world without an emotional allegiance, but made a permanent decision once they decided.
D) Suggest another idea to the tribe, and have them accept it as truth.
-------------------------------------------------------
There was no shortage of religion-related questions, as the next one came up. Erera, though she understood the spirits the most, still didn’t have a way to definitely identify what was an emotion and what wasn’t an emotion.
-------------------------------------------------------
What do you want to classify as an major emotion affecting the spheres of magic? Choose as many as needed.
A) Anger
B) Hate
C) Joy
D) Sadness
E) Lust
F) Hunger
G) Thirst
H) Disgust
I) Surprise
J) Fear
K) Pain
L) All of the above.
M) Suggest another list of emotions of the tribe, and have them accept that.
(Lust-Love
Wrath-Compassion
Gluttony-Abstainment
Greed-Generosity
Sloth-Activity
Envy-Appreciation
Pride-Humility)

-------------------------------------------------------
The tribe eventually settled down and drifted apart to do their various activities, all of them low-key after the morning’s excitement. Myre went to the lakeshore to collect rocks for woodcarving and for dropping onto enemies as directed by Etash. She toyed with their shapes while she was alone, and found that small and sharp rocks were best for woodcarving, while following Etash’s advice by collecting large and dull stones. Etash, unable to hunt because of his leg wound, spent a lonely afternoon gathering large broad leaves for the use of the tribe. Rothourn didn’t want to risk a gigadon hunt without the help of his son, so instead went to hunt small prey by the lakeside. Erera explored the jungle for edible fruits and leaves to assist the tribe, and Risthere went to look for more of the pale green ferns to help Etash heal.

Risthere wandered the grounds near the jungle, wading through waterlogged areas and swimming through areas so flooded that they resembled mangroves more than jungles. He mainly found the ferns he was looking for in the pits of trees and their branches, where rainwater pooled. As he climbed a particularly muddy hill, he saw a stiff-leaved plant whose scent intrigued him. Risthere waded through the waist-deep water (5 or 6 feet for an average crystalli) to harvest it. His instincts told him it had medicinal properties, so he found three more and carried them back to the home-grove.

Myre was the first to finish her duties, and deposited her load of rocks between two large tree roots before checking up on Sayak. She was asleep on a makeshift nest consisting of various soft-textured foliage, apparently sleeping peacefully. Without anything else to do, Myre grabbed two thin vines and played with them idly in her hands. Without knowing it, she was discovering the technology of weaving, though her effort achieved nothing but a poorly made rope with questionable durability. Still, it was a start.

As night fell, the rest of the tribe returned from their various activities. Rothourn carried a handful of dead triangle-headed amphibians, each varying from one to three feet long. Erera had an armful of fruits. There were small pink fruits sprouting long yellow hairs from their thick pink rind, and large yellow-orange ovals resembling mangoes. This meal of amphibian flesh, tropical fruit, and left over gigadon meat was enough for all of the tribe, who passed around the fruit and flesh until they were all sated. There were some pink fruits left, which Erera left on a branch for tomorrow. Content with their full stomachs, the tribe began socializing and building up their language. [Language +5]

The idea of a name to unite the small tribe soon came up, and after playing around with some suggestions, one suggestion was selected above the rest. It roughly translated to the wise ones of the tall plant, or the Tree Sages. Rothourn, Etash, Sayak, Erera, Risthere, and Myre. The Chyran Tanelm.

As the others began taking off to their various sleeping places around the grove, Rothourn again tried to start a fire, succeeding in creating a spark which leaped to a dry branch nearby. The spark didn’t go out, but the humidity in the air kept it from igniting into a flame, and once again the fire failed to bloom.

The entire tribe was asleep by sunset, save for Erera. She was thinking about the spirits and the magic she controlled this morning. Holding a piece of wood and small sharp rock, she began carving lines in the wood, out of boredom more than anything. As she unwittingly carved, her mind began pondering on how to again control the magic. She didn’t remember how she did it that morning…it just seemed to flow out of her naturally.

The Crystalli had recently started forming names for objects in the world around them, even giving each other individual names and bestowing a name upon the tribe as a whole. Erera suddenly thought about the race as a whole, and how they seemingly lacked a name for it. Previously outside forces had given them the name 'Crystalli', but without a towering crystal in their lives the name no longer seemed to fit. The Crystalli were about to be rechristened, perhaps for the last time. Before they had legs they were the Atlantean. Growing legs and scaling trees, they became the Crystalli. Now they would become something else, something entirely different...

The Saril of Chyran Tanelm were awoken just before dusk by Erera, who roused them urgently. Rothourn was soon on alert, worried for the safety of his tribe.

"What is it, old one?" he asked.

The Saril - Chyran Tanelm Tribe
-------------------------------------------------------
After their dusk tribunal, the tribe found it hard to sleep again. They decided to get off to an early start, and the tribe dispersed to each do their daily duties after minor discussion, mostly about who should gather food and who should gather materials. Etash, still wounded, volunteered to go around the lake and pick up logs of dry driftwood, whose different appearance and texture the tribe found intriguing. Rothourn and Myre were appointed the important duties of food gatherers. Rothourn would go after meat, and Myre after fruit and leaves. Risthere would harvest more medicinal herbs, which the tribe now called odana and boen. Odana was the name for the pale green ferns, while boen was the name given to the odd spike-leaved plants whose insides were soft, like jelly. Erera, who now held a high level of respect due to her sensitivity to the garieldrr, was given no tasks. She decided to see what her newfound powers could do, and spent most of the morning alone, channeling her magic.

By midday the majority of the tribe was heading back to their home grove when they all heard an ethereal whistling, despite being far apart. They weren’t the only ones that heard it – the whistling noise could be heard throughout the entire rainforest, which covered the better part of the continent which they were on. The noise was neither fearful nor uncomfortably loud, but rather unusually smooth. It was coming from the sky. The tribe members, all alike in curiousity, quickly dropped whatever they were holding and scaled the nearest tree. When their heads emerged from the emerald canopy, they saw the source of the noise.

A white streak, piercing the heavens, was blazing toward their home grove. It left sparkling white dust in it’s wake. It was moving at a forty-five degree angle, and seemed to move with a graceful determination, instead of just falling. In any case, none in the tribe understood what the object was. They watched, awed, as it suddenly disappeared beneath the trees in their home grove. For a moment, it was silent.

A wind erupted that was stronger than they had ever known, blowing everything back. Limitlessly tall trees groaned. Branches which could support a five-hundred-pound Saril swayed, and everyone, even Rothourn, was forced to hang on lest be blown off. The water beneath them blew backwards in massive waves of white. The hurricane winds lasted only for a moment, then suddenly died. Forgetting all else, the tribe flew forward, knowing that the star had landed in their grove.

They all arrived at the same time, and were surprised. The hurricane force winds, while leaving the forest in disarray, had done little actual damage. The behemoth trees of the rainforest could not be shaken, not even by falling stars. The ground held little signs of impact as well – there was only a hole several feet deep and wide enough to stick an arm in, not a massive crater. Unsure of what to think, they all glanced at each other. Suddenly, Erera gasped. She was the first to sense it, but soon the others did as well. The spirits of the forest rushed forth to meet the fallen star. Their graceful movements sounded like the faintest whisperings, a chorus of ghostly murmurs that was strangely peaceful. Their bodies were ethereal, more felt than seen. The spirits collaborated at the star, and vanished into it. The next thing that happened surprised the entirety of Chyran Tanelm.

A sprout began growing up from the hole, faster than possible. It defied nature, growing in several seconds what would take several weeks. It was the spirits’ work, their magic activating a seed which had been struck by the falling star itself. Soon, there was a tiny sprout there, no doubt a tree in its earliest stage of life. When it was a few inches tall, it stopped growing. The spirits’ magic was spent. The spirits migrated out of the hole, and again the same beautiful whispers hushed the grove. A voice spoke. No, it sang. It sang in no particular language, yet all of the tribe members heard it clearly.

“The heavens have gifted you with a starborn tree…care for it by all means, and let naught but the youngest seedcarrier drink from its sap…eternal life will await her…”
